Bertino Returns to Write 'Strangers' Sequel
Thursday, August 28, 2008

We broke the news exclusively here on B-D Back in June that Rogue Pictures was planning a sequel to their summer smash-hit, The Strangers, which racked in over $50 million here in the States. Today the news became official as Rogue has tapped Bryan Bertino to return to write the script. Bertino wrote and directed the first film. Read on for the full story.

Bertino wrote the original and made his directing debut on the film; it’s yet to be determined whether he’ll helm the sequel.

The expectation is that Liv Tyler, along with several of the original villains, will return. Production is being slated for early 2009.

"Strangers" became Rogue’s first breakout hit, and the genre division of Focus Features is approaching the sequel as a franchise that could have the legs of "Saw" or "Scream."
Budgeted at $9 million, the film grossed $54 million domestically in a highly competitive summer release slot. It has just begun an international rollout that expands to the U.K. this Friday.

Like the original, the sequel will be a co-production of Vertigo Entertainment and Mandate Pictures, with Doug Davison, Roy Lee and Nathan Kahane producing. Rogue is co-financing along with Intrepid Pictures, whose principals, Marc D. Evans and Trevor Macy, will be exec producers.

Bertino is also scripting to direct Black, a character-driven thriller with supernatural elements, and is rewriting to direct the thriller Alone. Both are for Rogue.

I liked The Strangers and thought it was the most entertaining horror/suspense film of the year so far. A sequel could be great. Most do not match the originals, but a few have been better, (I'll say "28 Weeks Later", and "Wrong Turn 2"). So I say good luck, I would see a Strangers 2 for sure.

The First One Sucked I hope this one is better with an actual good creepy score! The thing I did love was how Doll Face talked it was just creepy!

I loved the Strangers, but now I'm kind of sad it did so well. Why can studios not just enjoy the success of a movie and leave it at that? No doubt were looking at the latest franchise along with Lost Boys 3, Saw 25 and the countless other sequels. Bringing back Liv and the original villains is stupid. One of the things that made the Starangers interesting/scary was the fact it was based on actual events. To try and link in another movie based on no doubt Liv getting revenge or the "baddies" tracking her down to finish her is dumb.

If it wasn't the same writer behind the script, this movie would probably never live up to the greatness of the first one (which was one of my favorite movies this summer). But since Bertino is returning, it could turn out to be really good. I'm glad Liv Tyler will be back, though I had assumed they'd just target a new family. I hope Bertino also returns to direct as well.

I agree with ParisHiltonLover the first one sucked. I was really disappointed because I've waited for a year and got nothing. I don't know about a sequel but I may check it out if reviews are good.

I liked The Strangers, BUT what people don't understand about sequels is they should only be used when necessary. With Saw, the sequels are okay because they actually continue a story that was never finished. The Strangers had no real story. At all. And that's what made it good. I guess I can see this going the direction of Friday the 13th or something, but is it necessary?

I loved the Strangers...thought it was very cool. However, a sequal i think would take away the whole point of it. You dont know who these people are they are just three guys who show up and have fun killing this couple for no reason. If they make a sequal it will deduct from that simply because your more used to the characters and im sure "Hollywood" will feel a need to explain origins and reasons and crap as they always do, ruining the whole point.

The 1st one sucked majorly. Worst movie I've seen this year hands down. Bertino better hope for a sequel to THEM so he can bite from that movie again. Waste of 90 minutes this movie was.

The movie was silly. It had no score really. And the main characters were weak. It's not compelling to watch weak characters get terrorized through stupid situations only to meet their demise at the end (in a real anticlimactic fashion). I have no problem with unhappy endings. But my main problem is how unrealistic it was that the characters (especially Liv) did not fight back at all. I can understand if the male stranger was the one mainly going after Liv. It could be scary for a woman for a dude with a mask and an axe chasing you. But the female strangers were NOT scary, and Liv is like 5'10 in real life. You mean she can't at least try to fight since she is bigger than them? I don't know, any one of us if faced with the situation would have at least killed one of them. It's natrual for humans to want to survive, especially if someone is invading your home.

I thought that The Strangers left alot to be desired having already seen the movie that they ripped from, Them. Them(Ils)is actually a French movie based on true accounts of what happened to an Austrian couple. If The Strangers turned you on...Them will knock you on the floor and kick you...twice.

Bring it on! Glad Bertino is back. Means the follow up has a chance of being good. And guys, Lions Gate and Rogue are two different companies. Drake had nothing to do with Strangers.

Hopefully they'll stay Strangers. I'm all for a sequel as long as it doesn't overexplain everything, or bury us in too much of an origin story.

A co-worker of mine is a close friend of the director & writer of The Strangers. The movie was not-NOT- based on actual events. That was pure movie marketing and strategy to increase the scare factor. The director even said as much in an interview. This was one of the best horror movies I have seen in ages!! The biggest complaint for me was the scene in the kitchen area when Scott & Liv are tied up. I laughed instead of being scared. That little bit aside, I was freaked by the male stranger & his mask. I knew there'd be a sequel before I left the theater. DON'T MESS IT UP!!

Stoked about this Strangers was easily the best horror film of the past year maybe two. I totally see this as a trilogy, at least a sequel for sure. A lot of horror fans on here stated that they did not like this movie but it was great for what it was I'm guessing these are the people who thought silent hill was good (GARBAGE). I hope that they give a little into who the strangers are but not much keep it still a mystery for the most part thats what made them freaky. And no new strangers please keep it the three dont bring in another. Not sure how they will bring Liv Tyler back though? Maybe since the first was paying tribute to texas and them, they could go the route of almost halloween and have them come to finish the job while she is in the hospital that could be good. You have room then to expand on the deaths in the film. Either way I think it will be good I hope.

The only great horror sequels that I know of where 28 Weeks Later, Wrong Turn 2, The Devil's Rejects, and Psycho 2. That's not a lot when you consider how many horror sequels have been made over the years. The law of averages says this will probably suck donkey balls.

Great, now we are criticizing films for not having a score? "No Country for Old Men" didn't have a score and I don't hear anyone complaining about that. As far as a sequel for "The Strangers" goes, I could care less. I liked the first one a good deal, it was a return to 70s horror, but I've been fed and I'm satisfied.

I enjoyed The Strangers. I thought at times it was a little slow and I thought they could have fought back a little, but it was a great story. I liked Them also. Yes, there were similarities but they were different movies. I like the fact of a sequel so we can maybe understand who they are and why they kill. Liv Tyler was murdered in the first so bringing her back would be a mistake. How about new couple or family and this time more terror and fighting back. No hospital, no Liv, no kidding! I can't wait to see what they come up with.
