New Zealand [REC] Promotion Draws REAL Blood

One of my favorite foreign horror films of all-time is Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza's Spanish flick [REC] (review), which has already been remade here in the States as QUARANTINE (hitting theaters October 10). While the remake is already arriving in theaters, the original is still making its way around the world giving horror fans a taste of some real horror. While the film was making its rounds in New Zealand, a promotion for the release made the news as it was banned by the New Zealand censors. Read on to see what happened...

A promotion for the release of an upcoming horror film involving a cocktail laced with human blood has been banned by New Zealand censors, according to Stuff (and various other sources).

The promotion for Spanish horror film [REC] - a movie so scary one Kiwi viewer soiled themselves at the New Zealand premiere - was deemed dangerous and offensive by the Chief Investigator for the New Zealand Food Safety Authority.

It centred around an Extreme Bloody Mary, a make-believe cocktail containing drops of blood.
Under Section 9 of the Food Act 1981, it is prohibitive to serve food that is unsound, unfit or offensive for human consumption.

[REC] is a documentary-style film in the style of The Blair Witch Project that follows local Barcelona firefighters working a night shift.

It is being released in New Zealand theatres from August 28, and is screening as part of the Incredibly Strange Film Festival.

It's movies like this that make it a great horror film.

Someone crapped their pants at the premiere?! AWESOME! I thought this movie was amazing and I can't wait til Quarantine. Also: I thought it would be pretty common knowledge that a cocktail with actual blood in it would be considered a sanitation issue, I don't know why someone would think that a good idea at all. And who's gonna want to drink anyones blood at a promotion for a ZOMBIE film? That's just asking for disaster. Either that or setting up a sequel :P

To thedescent08; believe me, it was money well spent. Make sure you watch it with friends so you can enjoy seeing them scared shitless. To KniVeskum; Rec 2 is already in the works. To the folks who thought it would be a good idea to serve real blood; what the fuck were you thinking? It's a great movie with across the board great reviews, let it ride on that. What would have been better is if you had hired a homeless crack addict to bite people in the face.........

what the hell? that is a real sick way to promote a movie!!! a) people should donate blood, not drink it and b) don't forget about HIV risks. Freakishly stupid move!

The blood had actually been medically cleared as fine for human consumption. I guess that wasn't good enough.

And I always thought scared shitless was just a phrase..

Thank god the promoters weren't cheeky and put blood extracted from the casualties that were infected with the rage virus.

don't get me wrong, REC is a good/decent movie, but it's a little bit overhyped (IMO). it's intense in some scenes (although if you thought Cloverfield or The Blair Witch was shaky cam...get ready for REC!) were so hard to make out what was going on......it got a bit frustrating. it's DEFINITELY not SO scary as to make someone shit their pants (unless you are a 5 year old).

EBAY UPDATE--I have been getting a lot of PMs recently asking me where I found my blu-ray region 0 copy of [REC]. I saw another all regions blu-ray copy on ebay uk about a week ago, but I checked today and it is no longer on. there is only one blu-ray copy of [REC] available on the site, but it is not all regions. if you have a region b blu-ray player or if its multi-region then you can buy it.

Also, for some reason, my computer sometimes won't let me reply to PMs or in the forums, so if you have a question about [REC] ask here.

Is this movie really that scary, because I hate it when everybody saids a movie is scary and I go and see it and be like, oh thats it, thats why everybody was so scared. Like that movie THEM everybody said it was so scary I watch it and I was like what the fuck whoever was scared of this is a real pussy to the horror community. Yeah I was creap out but scared not the slightish bit. So this movie better be scary as fuck because I havn't been scared or freak out for a long ass time since the remake of the ring... Yes I thought that was scary when it came out, now looking back on it ahhh it's more funny then scary.

Dude, my friend bought this movie for 30 bucks, in blu-ray, so you dont even have to worry about region locks or anything. 70 bucks is to much money for any movie. It's an awesome movie though, I saw it on google for Free :)

flesheater123, (IMO) NO this movie is NOT the most intense, scary movie to ever grace the screen. it's a good to decent movie (from what you can see. it's VERY shaky cam...to the point of frustration). it's definitely worth watching, but don't let ALL the hype get your expectations too high to where you'll be let down.

There's a REC 2 underway, eh? I'll have to keep an eye out for that one. As far as how scary REC is, I wouldn't say it's horrifying, but it has its moments. It always leaves you wondering what's going to happen next and the ending is pretty freaky, but I won't spoil anything. More than anything else, it's a really good zombie movie. I'd have to say it's one of my favorites. I had to download it with subtitles, but I plan on seeing Quarantine in theaters and buying it and REC when they come out on DVD. And I personally never had a problem with the camera style, it moves like you would expect it to with somebody running for their lives with it.
