We learned this afternoon that Pathe Films has renamed their sequel to Neil Marshall's THE DESCENT to simply, The Descent: Part 2, which works in a sense considering where the story goes. The sequel will continue the story of Sarah, who as the only survivor of an all-female caving expedition gone horrifically wrong, suffers severe psychological trauma. Unable to speak, she accompanies a rescue team back to the cave, but events once again take a sinister turn. In addition, we also discovered that Lionsgate now has domestic rights to release the film here in the States, so hopefully we'll be seeing it come 2009. Read on for a brand new still we were supplied with.
i kno everyone loved the descent. but i couldnt get in2 it? dont kno why not? i only watch horror movies and that one didnt do much for me? might hafta watch that one again?
Hey Betz, maybe you couldn't get into it for the same reason I couldn't get into it over....the friggin accents. I couldn't STAND the accents on those girls. It literally drove me nuts. The movie woulda been great if it wasn't for the goddamn accents. Call me ignorant all you want, but those girls sounded like morons in that movie. And sure, yeah, whatever it's a foreign film, blah blah blah...whatever...I'm still entitled to my opinion which is that of me hating that dumb accent.
Actually, I'm not even sure as to weither or not it's a foreign film...I just kinda went under that assumption. I checked on imdb and it had it listed as a USA film...but whatever, my opinion still holds on them dumb accents.

couldnt tell ya what i didnt like bout the descent but i watch horror movies over and over again and i knew then that ill never watch that one twice. now coming out w a part 2 i might hafta watch it again. im a hypocrite, haha
What a stupid plot. Yeah, I'm sure anyone who saw their friends get ripped apart in a dark cave would absolutely be chomping at the bit to go back there and have the same thing happen again. Not to mention this totally ruins the actual ending to the first one. Plus no Neil Marshall = epic fail. I smell DTV.
Dude I dont give a fuck what anyone says Neil Marshall kicks ass!! The descent was beyond good it built tension on fear of closed spaces then delivered on creature scares. I dont give a fuck who you are the scene were she has the camera and the girls are freaking out in the den and she pans back and the creature is just standing there everyone jumped there. Plus I know some people will disagree and thats fine, but Doomsday was awesome it was every 80's movie you loved rolled into one and he did it with respect to the movies he copied not many would do that. A little upset though that he's not directing. I will be there to see it forsure.
I like both The Descent and some of the remakes like TCM and Halloween, and I look forward to Friday the 13th.
While I agree that the sequel does throw the ending of the first one off, I'd gladly watch another one to see how they did it. Even if the movie has a stupid plot or reason for going back in it can still scare the shit out of us if done right. Here's hoping.
i aint part of no remake crowd but i did like the tcm and halloween remake and wana see the 13th. doubt that the descent will make such an impact that in 25 years it will be remade? who knows tho they keep making pieces of shit remakes now.
The first one was decent at best, and way too cliche-ridden for me to enjoy. This one looks to be pretty cheesy, if I'm to be honest. How many copy/paste monster movies can people see before we have had enough?
That part in the first one when they were using the night vision on the video camera and they saw the creature scared the S*** outta me! I don't know if I just wasn't expecting it or wasn't paying attention or what. But damn!
How the fuck was it cliche-ridden? Women exploring a cave and it's full of cave monsters... did you expect the cave monsters to NOT attack and play Go Fish with them instead?
I don't recall seeing her actually dying. I recall her waking up in the cave and hallucinating she's at her kids birthday party, but I don't recall seeing her actually dying. Either way, I'm disappointed that Neil Marshall isn't coming back to direct. Strange how much the first Descent is like Alien, in terms of its suspense and atmosphere and now it seems they're ripping off of the premise of Aliens a bit for the sequel.
I don't hate this movie but I don't think it's all that either. I certainly don't think it deserves a sequel, especially since it sounds almost exactgly like the plot to Aliens. Don't these rescue teams ever learn?
Irish mic is right. The decent is a great horror movie and really does not need a sequel.Neil marshal is great but doomsday was a hugh dissapointment.I would love if he had made his "zombies on an oil rig" script that he was working on years ago.
I thought she died in the end? wasn't she still in the cave staring at an imaginary cake?
there was an alternate ending which wasn't as good, but i still thought she died?
wtf... first one wasn't even that good.
The Descent is in my mind(and many others)one of the best horror films of all time...why make a sequel? Have studios not learned that horror sequels are never good?(There are obviously a few exceptions...Aliens)Its fucking ridiculous to make a sequel to this.
I'll see it, the first one was ok took awhile to get to the good stuff. My question is how this movie is gonna start off? I've two endings. Also why the hell go back into the cave stupid?
I've got high hopes for this, I loved the original, one of only a few films which genuinely frightened me. I'm glad they've changed that stupid title too.
Screw sequals...they should just do a remake of the first one. That seems to be the thing to do nowadays.
A remake with the same cast, same crew, same script...everything. Just completely redo the entire movie scene for scene, but cut out the annoying accents the girls had and replace them with normal American sounding accents.
I am actually quite excited. I thought the Decent was awesome. its been a while since a movie was released that had that chill effect it did on me. The monsters were very well done and perfectly executed. The actresses were unknown and talented. All makes for a good horror film. Like the great Stephen King said " there is nothing like a unknown actress running around screaming with a knife to catch an audience" Hey im excited for the second one to come out .
I know this will never happen...and if it did by some weird chance, it would be the target of massive critisism...but for some reason I imagined the creatures from Descent crossing paths with the Hellraiser cenobites. I know the two don't fit together, and it is a random obscure thing to think of...but I pictured it for some reason, and I don't know why.
Again, I know this will never happen...it was strictly an imaginative vision. Two elements that do not fit together and very likely never will
And then I pictured the soldiers from Aliens fighting the canibal creatures from the descent, which lead me to picture the cenobites controlling a massive army of the aliens, and now I'm just getting completely ridiculous.
I just watched the original last night for the first time, great stuff. I just hope they don't go for the origin of the creatures thing or something. Those things were scary enough when left to one's imagination. I guess they could shed some light on it if it were done moderately..
The Descent is REALLY awesome. Horror at itīs best. Claustrophobic (spelling?), great scares and tension, and probably most important, you get to know the characters so you DO care wheather they die or not. Which makes it a thrill to watch.
THEREFORE all creds goes to Neil Marshall, who also directed the great low budget horror/action Dog Soldiers. Itīs his movie, thatīs why itīs so great.
So a descent 2 without Neil Marshall? Nah, this sequel probably wonīt even count for me then. So the ending in The Descent stays the same for me :)
Go Neil Marshall!
I enjoyed the first one. I'm lookin forward to seeing part two. I don't know if it can possibly be as thrilling as the first film, but I'm gonna give it a shot. Perhaps they will add more gore! :)
The Descent is probably my favorite horror films and I dont mind sequels, even if they aren't nec. However, this is bullshit. For one, the fact that Sarah is even in this film completely ignores the point of the first ending (the original one, not the dumbed down American version where she escapes) So, basically Neil Marshal has decided to use the Alternate ending that he himself says he doesn't like!?
Not to mention the fact that the plot makes no sense what so ever, why the FUCK would Sarah ever go back into that cave? She wouldn't! Also the fact that we have been told Juno is still alive and in the cast really takes away the build up to us finding out she's still alive, and the fact that she is alive at all ruins her story. She accidentaly killed her friend and in a bitter twist, she was also killed by her friend for something she didn't mean to do. Sure, it sucked and it was tragic, but it was what the film was about.
So, I will see this film opening night in theaters, and i might enjoy it as a film, but I will not consider it a sequel to the Descent, because I already know how that story ends...
Yes, the Decent was badass, but a sequel would be a bad idea. Very rarely does a good horror movie sequel come along. Especially with this kind of movie. Unless they got the same writers and director, but i don't think that's likely
Wow, 52 comments and only a few people got it right (thanks Airfall). The Descent is one of the all-time greatest because it combines so many things that trigger fear in all of us, and does it well. That's part of Neil Marshall's genius. Whining about foreign accents? Fuck off. (You're gonna miss out on some seriously great horror flicks if you can't handle a foreign accent EnSabahNur, maybe you should just stick with SciFi Originals) Ultimately I fear that the sequel will be a horrible disappointment (did anyone see The Hills Have Eyes 2 redux? Same rescue-team plot, and pure crap). I'll still see it because I'm curious to see if they can somehow pull it off. Maybe we'll get a rare Aliens-style surprise sequel, but I won't be holding my breath.
The Descent is my all time favourite film, Neil Marshall did fantastically as well as the cast and crew! I'm really looking forward to the sequel. When i first heard Neil Marshall wasn't writer or director i was a little dissapointed - but he IS apart of it. Neil has even had alot of imput in the script (giving his notes and thoughts on where it should go). So i for one am really looking forward to the sequel!! Plus someone stated that the sequel will follow the US cut - but in an interview with Shauna Macdonald (Sarah) she explains that The Descent: Part 2 will infact follow the original UK ending (her still stuck in the cave)...
I think a sequel is unnecessary; a direct sequel even moreso. Why not throw a new group of cavedivers into the cave to get all claustrophobia-ridden and, you know, eaten?
Also, I like how defensive everybody gets when one douche comments that they don't belive one real horror fan reads this site. Seriously? It's a horror site, we're all here for the same goddamn reason. We dig horror.
I have "The Descent" on dvd and have watch it several times. I really love this movie. Neil Marshall was very clear that this movie was about a womans descent into madness as her party literally descends further into the cave (he states this in the "Making of" portion in the extras on the dvd). The UK version left me with the definite impression that Sarah does not get out alive. I think a sequel betrays Neil Marshall's intent in the original. That's probably why he isn't involved in it.
i agree completely with storyteller, and also she also killed Juno because she found out she had an affair with her husband before he was killed in the crash
Well, all I can say is that "The Descent" was a billion times more scary than "The Cave" could ever hope to be. The thing I liked the most about "The Descent" is how the director made the caves a living breathing character in the film...also, no lights! The only lights used in the movie, were those carried by the girls...talk about making you feel clostrophobic! (okay, they used production lights in some scenes, but very little of it...just to get the point accross). So, why am I rambling on about this...well, it's because if the director can pull off the same kind of tension from the first movie, without being over/under done, then we can have a pretty good sequel...But, I had the distinct feeling that Sarah never made it out alive from that movie because she went mad in one of the more deeper parts of the cave...how in the hell would she find her way back out if she probably died from lack of water/food/light? Well, I hope they make a good sequel...I'll always give a sequel a chance, but I always hate being disappointed (latest example "Starship Troopers II"...what shite, at least part III was sort of good).
When I saw this great movie, the only ending I've known is pretty unclear and the best: first she escapes in the car, when you start to think that she's safe, Juno is at her side, then back to the caves it was just a dream and there she is with her daughter having her 6-year-old birthday, considering she's losing her mind the ending leaves plenty scope for a follow up. I only regret that Marshall doesn't direct the sequel of this great masterpiece.
descent=decent
it was good, it had the jump scares in it and the cool looking creatures, i dunno, i'm really hard to please when it comes to horror, it's not one of my faves though.
i agree i think most sequels are a bad idea.
i also agree that the accents were horribly annoying. haha.
the descent is up there with one of the best horror movies made. i read somewhere that the second one was supposed to mix together the creatures and claustorphobia. so people are gonna get f*cked in the tight tunnels
the descent in my opinion is fkg mint!!! neil marshall lukd like the 2nd coming, dog soldiers was excellent then came the descent,..whoa!!! where on quite a ride here i was thinking..then came the quite shite lets be honest,,doomsday..descent part 2..mmmmmm. i think if mr marshall was directing then yes i would excited,.hes not but he is involved..i really think exactly how good this film turns out will depend on how much involvment he has....time will tell....
I liked Descent because at least the creatures were original and they cannot catigorically be called zombies but rather creatures that may at one time been human but evolved to survive in the enviroment of dark caves. The chicks did allright for themselves and I am looking forward to seeing the sequal if there more chicks in it.
the first one wast too bad. i liked it. hopefully they wont ruin that by making a crappy sequal which ALWAYS happens
