Although much of the following has already been reported, Wes Craven was the guest of honor at this past weekend's Festival of Fear, which took place in Toronto, Canada, thanks to Rue Morgue Magazine. At the panel, Craven revealed that he believes that Platinum Dunes is off of the Nightmare on Elm Street remake, along with Bob Shaye. He also chatted about The Last House on the Left and the state of horror today. Read on for all the juice...
The guest of honor at this past weekend's Festival of Fear, presented by Rue Morgue, was the infamous Wes Craven, who you might know at Freddy Krueger's "daddy". Below you'll find a few of the highlights from his panel, where he showed a very fun and very well received clip from his upcoming film 25/8. Jovanka Vuckovic hosted the panel where she touched on many of his past films and upcoming ones as well...
First Craven talked a bit about his upcoming film 25/8, which will be released by Rogue Pictures sometime next year.
"The film takes the point that if you have to fight the toughest person in the world you have to work 24/7 - to fight The Devil you have to work 25/8 - that’s where the title came from. We shot it in the spring and summer in Conneticut, I am just very excited about it. It’s a cast a basically unknowns who are terrific." Max Theirot, Denzel Whitaker, Shareeka Epps and Emily Meade all star.
Craven also reports that he thinks Platinum Dunes is officially off of the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET remake, along with New Line Cinema founder Bob Shaye.
"The fact is I heard from my agent that a remake (of the original Nightmare on Elm Street) was going to happen. So I called my friend Bob Shaye. As you may know New Line Cinema had now been shut down by Warner Bros, who owns it, all of the properties were assumed by WB and Bob didn’t know any more about it than I did, he told me I certainly have no control over it. Michael Bays company Platinum Dunes had it, but I believe that is no longer the case. There is a writer on it, I don’t know if it’s a remake or prequel. I don’t have any real information about it."
He also chatted a bit about that ridiculous Billy Bob Thorton rumor that hit the web.
"The Batman’s have been done with many different guys, so it IS possible for a new actor to come in and do something interesting with a roll that has been done by another actor for a long time. I have no connection to it. There is a possibility that it could be interesting depending on who does it and how seriously they take it. Under his breath he joked I just won’t be a part of it!"
A film that has been testing pretty heavily in Los Angeles is Rogue's remake of Craven's LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, which he briefly talked about.
"I am one of the three producers, we shot in South Africa and some in Los Angeles. The director’s name is Dennis Iliadis, who, if you want to see any of his film HARDCORE, you would have to get a foreign DVD... it's kind of a sad story of two teenage street prostitutes in Athens. We gave him the script and he has done something really really hard hitting, totally loyal to the original, in its theme, but he really made it his own. They had one test screening already and it went through the roof." Although we know that there have been TWO test screening, with a third already planned. What we've heard is that it truly has tested through the roof... good news for us horror fans!
Craven also touched lightly on the state of horror...
"I didn’t really find the torture porn stuff terribly interesting. I am the older generation, but it wasn’t really the subgenre of torture, this is a very deep issue now with the war crimes happening. Is it right is it wrong? How do you stand up to somebody? Could you yourself possibly torture someone? These are the kinds of questions (these films) bring up. Where its going…I don’t know, in the past reports say its dead and I think that twice I have proven them wrong. It will revitalize itself, if you look at any genre 90% of it is crap, even in our beloved genre, but something will come along that changes it. I am a movie fan, but I don’t seek out and see every horror film out there because none of them scare me."
Sweet article.
We need some teasers on Last House on the Left.
I totally wish I could of sat in on the Wes Craven event, but the pricetag was a little steep. FOF ruled massively though.
Where did anyone see anything positive regarding the Nightmare remake in the above article? The way I see it it mind end up being crap, not even Wes Craven knows what is happening with it
good i am glad that it isnt being remade. its bad enough all of my fav. old school horror is being remade (poltergiet, candyman, friday the thirteenth (even though i am seein it, tcm crud even the chuckster) atleast my one all time fav. isnt. plus none can replace robert englund.
1) The Q&A was free. I just had a regular passs and got in no problem. It was the autographs/photo ops you had to pay to get into.
2) Blud: It's funny that you bring up spell checker but don't realize that spell checker wouldn't catch ANY of the problems you're bitching about. What you want is a proof reader, not spell checker.
id be interested in a remake. Keep Freddy alive and goin in this generation for young up and coming horror fans. i loved the tcm remake and cant wait for the 13th.
Hey Blud, guess what? You forgot an apostrophe in "haven't". Also, English, in reference to the language, is always capitalized. If leaving out a letter in a word, such as "fucking" or "pudding", "fuckin'" or "puddin'" would be the proper form, again, with an apostrophe. Since you obviously don't know where it is, it's the button to the left of the Enter key. Use it. You already admitted to misspelling "grammar", but you also forgot the second "a" in "actually". Also, to flow better, the last two sentences should read "Get a new writer, cunts, one who can actually type." Maybe you should get a proofreader, asshole. On topic: Last House on the Left remake should be good. Boo to Nightmare remake.
I figuring no one over the age of 25 would want to see NOES remade. Why even do another one. I would like to see new horror characters grace the movie scene insteade of remakes. Seems like people r going along with remakes because they sound cool. They don't if they are going to remake a movie do some of the ones from the 80s that no one every herd of. Why does Bay and fuller continue to pump out remakes? And besides everytime they do they get music directors to direct the films. Death to remakes!!
Sorry but this sounds an awful lot like "ANOES 4: The Dream Master". Collecting abilities and all. I hope it's good. I enjoyed "Red Eye". But again, Rachel McAdams sells the shit out of that movie.
GO WITH ROBERT ENGLUNDS IDEA (I THINK IT WAS HIS IDEA) OF MAKING A VERY GOOD, SERIOUS PREQUEL EXPLORING THE ORIGINS OF THE THEN ALIVE AND ACTIVE CHILD KILLER FRED KRUEGER, IT'S NOT LIKE HE HAS TO BE A CERTAIN AGE, HE CAN BE THE AGE HE IS NOW AND IT'LL ALL BE VERY BELIEVABLE, PUT IN NICE LITTLE MOMENTS WHERE YOU CAN SEE SOME PERSONALITY AND CHARACTERISTICS GROW IN THE HUMAN FRED, JUST LIKE THE DEAD FREDDY WE'VE KNOWN. THIS IS A GOOD IDEA, BETTER THAN A REMAKE IDEA, AT LEAST IT WOULD BE ORIGINAL AND YOU COULD REALLY PLAY WITH ALOT OF IDEAS, RATHER THAN SINGING THE SAME OLD SONG AND GOING WITH BULLSHIT REMAKES, AND THERE'S REALLY NO SEQUEL TO IT THAT WOULD MAKE SENSE AFTER FREDDYS DEAD, AND A NEW NIGHTMARE, AND VS JASON, YOU CANT DO VS JASON 2, THAT WOULD BE SO SILLY, THEY GOT THROUGH THE FIRST FREDDY VS JASON AND IT WAS DONE WELL, SURPRISINGLY, BUT LIGHTNING WONT STRIKE THAT IDEA TWICE...
now come on prequel, prequel, one last time to see robert englund as fred krueger, and this idea is more fresh than any crappy versus movie or sequel or remake could ever do...
robert englund is freddy krueger, just as boris karloff was frankenstein, other people played frankenstein, but what karloff did in frankenstein and bride of frankenstein (son of frankenstein i tend to forget because the character went back to the ways of the first, instead of exploring more of what bride did)
1, 2 freddys coming for you...
I hope this is accurate coz i really don't want them to remake my favourite horror film of all time. The Springwood Slasher prequel would kick ass. Make it really gritty and gory set in the late 70's or early 80's and end it with Freddy being burnt allowing for a final scene where Freddy first enters somebodies Nightmares!
DevilNeverCry81, where do you get the "collecting the powers of people" vibe, cause nothing I've read about 25/8 states that. 25/8 suposably is about the serial killer who has many different souls within him. One is the killer, while the others are normal and harmless. When he dies, all his souls are reincarnated into babies born exactly when he died, hence the evil demonic persona is seeking to kill the other personas(which suposably ratted on the demonic persona, which lead to the man's death). That's pretty wild of a concept. If anything, it shares more in common with the first three NOES movies than NOES4. NOES had the killer coming back years later for the kids. In NOES2, there was the whole killer possessing someone to kill. In NOES3, they made it a point that those who the killer selected were special for a reason and were dubbed a name("The Elm Street Kids" in NOES3, "The Riverdale Seven" in 25/8). Interestingly enough, if any of you folks are fans of the Archie comics, that takes place in Riverdale as well. The name was probably chosen because it's the perfect ideal town setting where everybody knows each other and the days are very peaceful.
Pretty good article...I have to admit, I'm looking forward to the Nightmare remake, but I really don't see the point in a "Last House" remake. I mean the first one was actually pretty straight forward...
