As expensive as HD cams are to rent and operate, why didn't they go with film? Digital suffers from bad DOF (which lenses CAN correct, but they never use them) and 16mm is cheap and can look really professional. Take a look at Shallow Grounds. That looked like a 35mm studio film and was made on $700,000. This still looks like a decent rental.
