Writers Tapped to Pen 'Poltergeist' Remake

Finally, finally we have bragging rights on this remake - can we now say "I told you so?" It was officially announced today that MGM is moving forward on their remake of Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg's classic '82 horror film, Poltergeist, which we broke the news on back in November of 2006. Inside you can find out who is writing the remake and then cringe a little with me.

Juliet Snowden and Stiles White (The Birds, Knowing) are going into the light.

The "Boogeyman" scribes are rolling out more children's nightmares for MGM's planned remake of "Poltergeist," the 1982 horror film that made "they're here ..." the creepiest announcement ever voiced by a 6-year-old kneeling in front of a static-filled television.

The original "Poltergeist," directed by Tobe Hooper from a script co-written by Steven Spielberg, miraculously skirted an R rating despite its children-in-constant-peril, toy clown-strangling, face-peeling, skeleton-swimming medley of horrors. The MGM/UA release grossed $122 million worldwide and earned Oscar nominations for its ILM-designed visual effects, sound effects and score.

The story of a suburban home built over an Indian burial ground and thus inhabited by a nasty spook earned further cult status when two of the child actors in the movie died after the film's release. Two nerve-jangling sequels were produced.

Horror thrillers are in Snowden and White's blood. The writers, repped by ICM, co-wrote the $46 million-grossing 2005 release "Boogeyman" for Sam Raimi and Ghost House. They've had a hand in the never-hatching remake of "The Birds" for Universal. And they've co-written "Knowing," a Summit Entertainment release directed by Alex Proyas and starring Nicolas Cage, that is due in March.

BOOGEYMAN sucked dogs dicks for quarters. Fell asleep in the theatre almost with its drivel ADD edits & lackluster title boogeyman. But..we'll see. Poltergeist is classic & well made.

Why don't they remake BLOOD HOOK? THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME? How about something that needs an update or could benefit from a remake??? Hollywood is a bunch of lazyass motherfuckers who need to start making some original shit. "let's remake Shaun of the Dead! The English accents might be hard for us to understand" *sarcasm* I PRAY TO GOD THE SUSPIRIA REMAKE GETS CANCELLEND.

they better not get fucking Dakota Fanning to play the little girl! at least get somebody nobody knows. we all need to start boycotting this shit so Hollywood will get off their ass and do some originality. The only original stuff comes from Indie filmmakers and over seas.

I have to say I even like the idea of remaking this film as well. There are certain films I feel that could excel at being remade. Same as on the Childs play remake though please use very little CGI. That is what hurts most horror films they dont have the budget for great CGI and even when films have the budget it still looks off, and just takes you out of the film. Its as bad as being in the theater and getting into the film and then theres that jagoff who starts talking behind you. And why is it that the fucker who is always talking in the theater is right behind you?

Is steven speilberg going to produce this? Boogeyman was alright...Dakota sucks ass...Get that little girl from Little Miss Sunshine...she's better!...

i can understand studios remaking TCM, Freddy and Jason and Michael cuz we all love those characters and wana see more of them, but why remake this? its classic and should be left alone.

AHHH! Remakes! I'm shitting myself with fanboy rage as I continue to UTTERLY FAIL to comprehend that remakes have been around since the earliest days of cinema, and will continue for as long as they make money. Man, if only businesses would do things purely to satisfy me, instead of doing them to make a profit! I mean, what the hell kind of greedy jerks actually want their movies to make money so badly that they would dare to tap an existing property with proven name value that's sitting around unused?!?!? What selfish douchebags! I think all remakes, sequels, homages, movies inspired by other movies and plays, movies adapted from novels and comic books, and any other film that isn't 100% wholly original in every sense of the word should be banned forever! That way, no movies would ever come out, and unnecessary remakes would stop coming along and wiping the classic originals from existence, creating a permanent barrier that keeps new generations of film lovers from ever seeing or enjoying those classics. And while I'm at it, fuck anyone under the age of 17 if he or she wants to see a scary movie in theaters! They can go fuck themselves, because it just isn't fair to us adults to have to wait for the DVD releases to see unrated, gorier versions of horror films! No movie can ever be scary without buckets of viscera and dozens of bare tits in every other scene. No movie that isn't at least rated R is worth a steaming pile of monkey shit, or deserves to be called a "horror movie". I mean, the original POLTERGEIST was PG, and look how un-scary it was... Oh, wait.

Why can't hollywood start making new stuff? Leave the old stuff alone. Jeezus Christ...there's dozens upon dozens of comics that are great that could be adapted into movies...like for instance, Y The Last Man, I just read that and it was fucking fantastic...

Boogeyman was shit on a stick! Also, how can you possibly do better than Speilberg. Seriously, the original was all sorts of Speilberg(they even say that Hooper and Speilberg swapped directing duties more than once during the shoot). And that was during a time Speilberg was still a rocking every movie he got his hands on! You can't do any better.

Gore_Freak08

I agree with the second comment, there should be some kind of rule or law that prohibits a good film from being remade. It just breaks my heart to see cash-craving sons of bitches desecrate masterpieces. :(

Why oh why would you give this to the writers of Boogeyman? There was not one competent moment in the whole of the film. It was nonsensical, boring and lacked any real conclusion. From what I gather from Boogeyman this Poltergeist remake will start out slow, move onto incoherent and end with some really lame CGI that serves no other purpose but to distract from the fact that the resolution makes no real sense. If the people behind this decision had any common sense they'd, at the very least, not mention Boogeyman anywhere in the press release. This is the last thing that genre fans want to hear.
