In addition to our review for Alex Aja's Mirrors, which is now in theaters everywhere, Bloody-Disgusting reporter BC has posted his review over at his blog Horror Movie a Day. And don't forget to write your own review after you see the movie this weekend and tell all the B-D readers what YOU think. The story follows a security guard at a high-end department store who begins to investigate mysterious deaths occurring in front of the stores' mirrors. He soon discovers that there are murderous reflections out for revenge.
I did write my review. I called it the [unintentional] comedy of the year that somehow got a horror label. And there was NO gore in that film whatsoever. It could have gotten a PG-13 rating, which it should have.
I've seen a jaw ripping scene in The Grudge, which was just as graphic, but had no blood. I've seen another jaw detachment scene in The Orphanage, which I also thought deserved PG-13. The jap ripping scene in this movie had me laughing, actualy, because the CGI was so insanely bad. As for the amount of blood itself, most of it it was in the bath watter, and thus the scene was far from as graphic as it could have been. The horrid acting in the throat slitting scene made that just as laughable. Two scenes of blood and both were more funny than brutal: like I said, this movie was pretty much goreless.
And so far we've got nothing but complaints. Is anyone actually surprised at that? Really? It's just another remake of J horror from a person whose "next" film is a remake, his last film was "also" a remake, and the one before his last film may just as well have been a remake for all the originality and imagination it had (or didn't have) to it. You all should have been expecting this. At least you should have noticed the transparent, dollar-store excuse of a blatant rip-off of Poltergeist's Carol Ann that the little boy character was. Honestly, if you actually thought he was at all creepy then a My Little Pony commercial would probably put you in a rubber room.
Jacques, "Mirrors" may not be a gore hound film, but it certainly isn't “goreless” (is that even a word?). The first four minutes make sure of that. However, this is the most "tame" of Aja's films thus far.
Wharmon, I agree that the film was very weak. However, I found that many of the scenes inside the "Mayflower" were actually very well directed and creepy. His inspiration from “The Shining” is evident at times. This movie had much potential, but Aja didn't really capitalize upon it. The writing and acting were both ham-fisted (not to mention the ridiculous CGI flames) throughout much of the film.
TheDeadMayTasteBad, I went with a friend of mine who hates horror movies and is insanely squeamish. The first "gore" scene had him laughing. Throat slitting is so generic, done so many times, I don't see how people call it any more gory than a gunshot wound with a little blood. The only other gore scene in the movie was the jaw ripping scene, and as I said, it was no more graphic than what you've seen in the PG-13 rated The Grudge. Those were to kidsinmind.com where they rate the level of violence to inform parents, even THEY put The Dark Knight, PG-13, on the same level of violence/gore as Mirrors. Aja himself said MPAA gave him no problems with getting an R rating, and he used every bit of gore he wanted to use. The movie had no gore. If you're that much of a pansy to call a generic, non-graphic throat slitting gore, I can name PG-13 movies that you'd call over-the-top. And as much as people on this site hate PG-13 horror, sorry to say, this was just another one that somehow got an R rating. Alex Aja is nothing special. He's one of the most typical directors in the business, and his "gore" is always generic and boring. So much for horror supporting directors with balls.
JGrayland, this apology may come a little late, but I'm sorry for referring to your site last week as a "backwater" one. I'm still kind of a noob here on Bloody-Disgusting.
Ripvanryan, indeed. The badly executed CGI was one of the most distracting things about the film; for better or worse, once you see the "CGI flames", you won't forget 'em.
From Mr. Disgusting's review: "Before wasting any money on this remake at theaters, you should probably reflect on it a bit…" But wait: aren't you the guy that insists that horror fans should blindly "support" any theatrical horror that gets put out there? Or is it just the titles YOU deem worthy?
Jacques, i respect it if you weren't impressed w/ the throat slashing scene, but i thought it was one of the better throat slashing scenes i've seen in a while. Hight Tension had another one (ironically) when the mother got hers.
Let me tell you all something. You all should kneel down and suck AJA's cock because you all WOULD KILL to be in his position in life. Why are we all on this website? so one day hopefully our dream of making a horror movie may come true. STOP DOGGING MIRROR'S. There was plenty of gore and took the asian remake catogory to a whole new level. SUCK HIS FUCKIN DICK YOU FAGGOTS YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO SAY SHIT ABOUT HIS SUCCESS. i wish i knew you people so i could fuck you all up right now.
Ok saw the movie the other night and it was bad! Yet not all bad here was my problem with it. The film looked good except for the CGI, CGI is not good enough yet to have it control a whole film backgrounds sure some shots that are impossible to get ok, but put some effort into it. I dont blame Alex just yet for the movie falling apart after the first act. It seems all of his movies start out good then fall apart not sure if it's the studio or what. High Tension started out good then fell apart, Hills have eyes was great till the end of the trailer scene then it just went all blah same with this pic started out ok not great but ok then it just fell apart. Also when the old lady gets the demon back into her why did the movie turn into a superhero movie half the shit that happens to kiefer in that scene no normal person is getting up through a brick wall come on what is this Comando. Also he was trying way to hard to be Jack Bauer he wasnt bad in it. He was just doin his typical thing.
I went 2 c this in theater and I walked out not even half way through!!!
It was aweful!! From what little I managed to sit through I hated this movie!
I wish hollywood learn.
