RUMOR CONTROL: Just How Did Thornton Become Krueger?
Friday, August 15, 2008

I hated this week, I really did. After spending hours wasting my time writing stories on the BS that was GHOSTBUSTERS and the fun of putting out the TRICK 'R TREAT flames Warner accidentally ignited, Robert Englund got fans all stirred up over his claim that Billy Bob Thornton would slip on Freddy Krueger's glove for New Line Cinema's remake of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. The story, which we all laughed at the second we read it, spread through Internet Land like a dragon burning through a village. Even big sites and news publications reported it as FACT. It was fun watching reputable companies make a complete arse of themselves - but where, oh where, did the rumor stem from? You're going to LOVE this...

During an interview with IFMagazine, Englund tells them exactly where he heard these "facts":

"I heard this rumor from a journalist at a press conference during Comic-Con. I think Billy Bob is a terrific actor. I've been a fan since Evening Shade."

It's amazing how this sh*t spreads.

That would be a huge mistake casting him in a legendary role like Freddy! There is only one Freddy and we all know who that is.

They have to get an unknown actor! Come on!

I've met Robert and he seems like a cool guy, but I don't get why he really doesn't care that their fucking with the franchise that made him a star and that they'll pick some poor choice to take over the glove. All of the fans seem that their against it expecially if Robert isn't Freddy.

That is funny. "I reckon there ain't no runnin in the hallway, mm hmm." But seriously, are the fans really clamoring for a nightmare remake? I've not heard it. So why do it?

Bloody-Disgusting reported it as a rumor right away actually. I think they had an article up Monday after Englund said something Sunday Night on Loveline

How about Michael Berryman?

6:27pm, August 15, 2008

Maybe Robert is ok with it because he is not a whiny little baby that hates all change? Seriously, hating a remake for being a remake is retarded.

and thus it came to light: Comic-Con nerds are worse than desperate housewives when it comes to gossip

As much as I respect Thornton as an actor...There can only be one Freddie. Nobody but Englund could play the part. If it ain't Englund, Why bother???

You can keep Englund easy...just go all X-men 3 CG on his face and Tadah! He's young again. But no one wants to watch a two hour flick about a pervert who murders and fucks kids. It ain't gonna happen. Now, if they cut back in forth between the present and showed MORE of his past. Then maybe. But would that be any different than most Freddy flicks?

I think Michael Barrymore would be perfect.

Robert, love the guy but everyone should know to take his teases with a barrel of salt by now. Can you really imagine anyone filling the glove of Englund? This is just a flop waiting to happen, but the problem with such flops is they make just as much money...every Krueger fan who has bashed it since the begining will line up and see this out of morbid curiousity. A remake/prequel like Halloween would be interesting though but anyone who has seen the Nightmare films already know enough about his past...what more is there to know. Son of a hundred maniacs, a nun mother that hated him and killed herself...years of abuse from springwood residents...moving around from foster home to home until finally ending up with Alice Cooper for a stepdad! Where he learned the secret of pain by numbing himself to it then using it on others...Roseanne and Tom Arnold must have had something to do with it too.

Thornton is a great actor, but I couldn't see him as Freddy. I'll bet this "journalist" also told him Damien Cain was writing the script.

I'm a fairly obsessed Nightmare fan and have been for way more than a decade now. I couldn't stand the idea of Englund being replaced... then this name popped into my head. John Turturro He can be both hilarious and freaky scary. PERFECT! John Turturro is da bomb!

i love robert to death but the man needs to learn a few simple words..."no comment"...my god stop circulating rumors everytime u overhear something or u want something to b true, thats how u lose ur credibility and no one believes a fucking word u say!
