This evening we've posted our official review for Alex Aja's latest, Mirrors, which is now in theaters everywhere. “Aja attempts to take a slow-burning ghost story and turn it into one of his over-the-top gorefests and loses the essence of the story in his endeavors… before wasting any money on this at theaters, you should probably reflect on it a bit…“ Click the title above for the full review. Think I'm an idiot, or maybe you agree, either way, don't forget to write your own review after you see the movie and tell all the other B-D readers what YOU think! We all deserve to voice our opinion (remember to respect others).
Even though I can't comment on the movie since I haven't seen it yet, your review for Mirrors, and future reviews for other films, lost all validity with me once you claimed The Hills Have Eyes was a disappointment. Even though you are entitled to your opinion, I thought that film was fantastic and I'm sure plenty of other people on this site would agree with me.
^ well said. I think it looks good, and I loved the hills have eyes remake... funny how all the good horror films nowadays come from france or french directors...
I loved Haute Tension and I too thought the remake of The Hills Have Eyes somewhat of a dissapoinment. Do not bother with this film if you have seen the wonderful "Into the Mirror" because you will probably be let down. I have seen a prescreen copy and it is laughingly bad at times it is simply absurd. Personally, I think films like the brilliant "Inside" make it look like a bad B movie. It is entertaining at best but in no way lives up to the promise of Haute Tension.
haha ! fuck i love it when horror sites - much like this oe - praise a film before seeing it, then, as usual, it turns out to suck ass - bet your faces feel sticky with all that egg on it !
douches
Is anyone really surprised that another Aja movie is just brainless violence? That's the trend he's been following since he first ripped off of Intensity with Haute Tension. His movies are fun, just be sure to shut off your brain before watching them.
Scurgar: The remake of the Hills Have Eyes was dreadful. Absolutely dreadful.
neildiamondfan: When did they explicitly praise it? All I ever remember seeing were unbiased reviews of trailers and assorted scenes, as well as interviews and speculation. If you can find specific examples of praise, please, do not hesitate to let me know so I can remove my foot from my mouth.
I'm so glad you gave this a negative review. I'm going to go see it in a few hours, but the premise itself looked almost laughable. And as I look back, The Hills Have Eyes does seem a little disappointing.
Now maybe you guys will actually take these damned ads for the movie off your website. It sucks having to go through the trailer for a movie to get to a website where they tell you the movie sucks anyway. How about promoting a movie that doesn't suck?
yep ill prob still endup seeing it too unles i just wait for it to come to dvd. idk dont really care for anything descent anymore.....(waitin for the new sarah michelle gellar movie possession and the friday 13th remake). in the horror genre atleast.
And I also find it funny how I was the only one who said this movie would suck before it came out, but everyone said I was an idiot who knew nothing. But now that it's known that it sucks everyone has jumped on the bandwagon. Hmm.
for the record "Into the Mirror" was a boring fucking movie!!! w/ a couple of good scenes. SOUND FAMILIAR?!!! anyone claiming it's this brilliant or wonderful movie.....well..come one. and NEILDIAMONDFAN what DO you like. i don't think you've ever posted a positive post. all you do is fucking bitch and sound like a complete dick.
i'm still going to see MIRRORS today. i understand different opinions and all. i'm hoping (and am optimistic) that i'll still like this film. Aja is NOT a hack. i love his 2 earlier films and even thought his P2 produced film was decent.
i was a fan of Haute, and thought Hills was pretty good, so I might go see this film tomorrow afternoon.
Also, Into the Morror wasnt hitting on anything much anyway....
abe_the_cop, you just made my day! LOL
yeah, Bride of Chucky 8/10?! i'm more excited to see MIRRORS now.
this review is from ALANBOBET from the IMDB board for MIRRORS:::::::
"Although MIRRORS is a remake of the recent Korean film INTO THE MIRROR, my opinion is after seeing the film that Aja managed to put his particular stamp of horror in it and effectively made a good horror film that delivers, especially in the opening sequence that sets up the film and especially, the bathtup murder sequence with Amy Smart that made the audience that I was with, screaming and reacting with total horror. In my book, Aja's Film MIRRORS is as just as good as HAUTE TENSION and even better than his remake of THE HILLS HAVE EYES."
It seems that every Asian Horror remake besides The Ring gets a primarily negative review on this site. I'm not in any rush to see this, I'll wait for the DVD, but I do find Aja's movies entertaining, even found some entertainment value in the Aja produced P2, which was panned here. Most mainstream movies get negative reviews here, but I find B-D's reviews of smaller films to be pretty good most of the time (Automaton Transfusion is the big exception there), so I can appreciate his reviews, but don't take the mainstream ones as seriously.
it's more of a rewrite than a remade. "It's a different approach to the violence and the fear. I think we all have a special relationship to mirrors. The idea was to really find a way to make a movie that will change a way of watching yourself in the mirror and try to do something scary. I wanted to do something that falls in line with The Shining - that's my favorite movie ever. For me when New Regency came to me with the concept of Mirrors, I felt like I could try to explore something in the vein of The Shining.
*** Greg [Levasseur] and I decide to start from scratch and not connect with the original Korean movie.***
I think we have something really scary."
This has to be one of the most unintentionally funny movies I've ever seen. Myself and my audience were literately cracking up almost every "scare" scene. It also gave cliche and boring new meanings. Dear God, this was worse than The Happening.
Sounds to me from the review that Keifer and bad dialogue ruined the movie. That's not exactly shocking news; all that guy can do now is play Jack Bauer. Horror movies with bad scripts? That's part of the game, especially when you work for a studio. Obviously the script CAN'T be Haute Tension because anything with thought doesn't fit the studio model. People dissing on The Hills Have Eyes - tell me ONE better post-2000 American funded remake. It's the only decent remake out there, and it's on par with the original (how many horror remakes can say that?). And keep in mind that Aja and Levasseur went to fuckoff nowhere Morocco to escape studio politics for THHE, whereas this is an 'on the lot' movie.
So I'm still pretty optimistic for my screening, though worried that this may mark the artistic corruption of a duo that may have been horror's saviors.
seein it sunday, cant wait i actually try to look for the positive things in peoples life work instead of bashing on something because the only functioning thing in my life is my internet connection_( neildiamondfan)
and reviews do jack shit for me, there is people who for some reason liked turistas and the amytyville horror remake, i for one did not enjoy most of either -
"People dissing on The Hills Have Eyes - tell me ONE better post-2000 American funded remake. It's the only decent remake out there, and it's on par with the original (how many horror remakes can say that?)."
That's like saying Gonorrhea is the best STD cause it's the easiest to treat. Just the because it's the one remake that's not AS BAD as all the others doesn't make it good.
"Well you're the fuckin jerkoffs that promoted the shit out of this with your fucking annoying promo before the site opens to all the banners promoting it. Serves ya right that the flick doesnt stand up. Next time see the movie before you faggots promote it."
If all they did was praise films, they wouldn't be a very good horror site, now would they? It was also explicitly stated that they used the splash ad as a source of revenue which goes into funding this website, a website YOU apparently visit often enough to set up an account.
BludCrimson, you are actually MORE rude and negative than NeilDiamondFan. and that's hard to do. if this site and all of us are "faggots" then go somewhere else! somewhere more "straight". whatever.
Judging before hand is usually uncommon for someone like me, but for this once I will say that Mirrors doesn't look to be what the Aja has hyped it up to be. I am a fan of his work on The Hills Have Eyes remake.
I'll go see the movie and make up my own mind. Im a Aja fan and he hasn't dissapointed me yet. Besides, imagine what the guy can do when not working for a major studio. Oh that's right, I forget about Haute Tension. That movie was fantastic.
I liked Mirrors. Compared to some of the movies I've come across, the gore was not even CLOSE to over the top. I was entertained and actually a little freaked out at times. But everyone is different. Don't let one review stop you from seeing Mirrors if you really want to.
I hope anyone that does go to see it gets a better crowd then I did. Did I miss the agreement that you're supposed to laugh at something after you scream out at it?
Not the best, but not the worst movie horror movie of the year (i.e. THE HAPPENING). Sure the story is a little far-fetched (haunted mirrors), but once you get past that, it's at least entertaining. The tone is creepy, and the overall story arch was good. Definitely worth a rental for the jaw ripping scene alone. The movie did feel bloated and a good edit would do it wonders and maybe make Kiefer's uneven performance tolerable (there must have been better takes). I do think Mr. Disgusting was way too harsh on the film and will ensure that Hollywood will play it safer with PG-13 Prom Nights. This movie at least took some risks.
i didn't think the tone was creepy at all. Everything that happened in that movie just happened. There was no build up to the showing of the "ghosts" so when I saw everything there was no shock value. The scariest part in the entire film was close to the beginning when the pigeons flew out and scared him, i jumped 2 feet outa my chair. I saw nothing extremely wrong with the acting EXCEPT for the lamest performance of Kiefer rolling on the ground burning in some terrible CGI flames. VERY UNCONVINCING ROLLS AND SCREAMS KIEFER! OH and thanks to every horror website every gore scene was ruined and expected already which didnt help.
