Original 'Rocky Horror' Writer Slams Remake

I love when the sh*t hits the fan and it looks like we're in for a treat with MTV's remake of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, which just found financing this week. Today a new interview was posted with Richard O'Brien, writer/co-star of the original 1975 cult classic that also starred Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon, who pretty much puts the hammer down on the idea of the remake. Read on for the juicy bits.

A remake of cult 1975 film The Rocky Horror Picture Show is being produced without the blessing of its creator Richard O'Brien, he has told the BBC.

It was announced on Wednesday that the new version, which will be co-financed by Sky Movies in the UK and MTV in the US, would be co-produced by O'Brien.

But he told the BBC he would not be involved "in any way".

"I have no view on whether it should be remade but it doesn't have my blessing," he added.

The original 1975 film, starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Meat Loaf, has become a kitsch classic.

The plot revolves around young American couple Brad and Janet who accidentally stumble into a strange world of alien transvestites and overt sexuality.

Sky announced on Wednesday that Lou Adler, executive producer on the original film, would return in the same role, while O'Brien would co-produce.

But, speaking on Wednesday afternoon, O'Brien told the BBC: "I'm not co-producing it and I won't be involved in any way.

"The first I heard about it was when people sent me cuttings from US papers."

He later told BBC Radio 5 Live that his involvement had been announced "to suggest I've given the project my seal of approval".

The original was "a wonderful movie", he said. "I don't know where they'll go with it really," he added. "I've even heard that they're going to put new songs in. "I wrote the book, the music and the lyrics. "Where are they going to get the songs from? Who's going to do that? That's a bit strange isn't it?"

Seriously screw a remake if Richard isn't involved. The original film was his baby, his vision, in which he was in pretty much total control and developed the project through many stages. Does he own the music/songs? It sounds like he does and if he isn't giving this his blessing what are they going to do for songs? Like he said, "are they going to write new songs?" Screw that then!!!

I'll rather watch Shock Treatment over and over again, than an O'Brien-less Rocky Horror remake!

i agree %1000 that this shouldn't be remade. no question. but he should just get in line w/ all the other people who think remakes/reboots/sequels shouldn't be done at all. complaining about it or not giving it your "blessing" isn't going to change anything. again, i'm w/ you guys. DON'T REMAKE THIS. or they could just come up w/ something original or even original-ish! LOL. i still think REPO! should've be given a real release. it's an updated Rocky Horror (kinda).

Some classic films should have a stamp on them making it so studios can't touch them. A while ago when they announced the remake of A Nightmare on Elm St. and it hit me that they are actually going to remake every horror movie ever made. Some films don't need a remake because they were perfect the first time and there's nothing to build upon. Only Tim Curry can play Frank-N-Furter, the same with O'Brian as Riff Raff. I'm going to rip my hair out the day they announce the remake of A Clockwork Orange.

Yes, repeated viewings of Shock Treatment would be preferable to this horrid idea.

And as usual, all the suckers in the world will make this millions of dollars. I'm sure as hell not on board.

I think if they have a excellent writer, an awesome director and an bad-ass cast... they have a chance. As for the new songs, I don't know if you know about this but in the 90's, I came across a CD that was titled: The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Songs From The Vaults Soundtrack. This outstanding CD had songs that were meant to be in the movie but was left out (for some crazy ass reason). I can see them use a few of these songs in the remake, if it was done right. If they use songs from this album, they have a greater chance.

I just found the tracks for The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Songs From The Vaults Soundtrack online. For the remake, they HAVE to use these songs. Little Nell seemed to have a bigger role in the movie, she has 4 solo songs for herself. As for Tim Curry, he has 3 solo songs. I dig the Little Nell songs, can't get them out of my head. Check them out.

Finally someone with some balls to call Hollywood's bullshit. Kudos, Richard. Simon Pegg did the same when they tried to remake his show. Guess there's something in the water only here in America that makes everyone empty suits who will bend over for the studios. And for the record, this has got to be the WORST idea for a remake yet. And that's saying something.

Not that I support the remake, but how is he in any way slamming it? This article is very mis-leading, as he said literally nothing negative about the remake.

No More remakes of already awesome movies please!!! It would not even BE Rocky Horror Picture Show without Richard O'Brian. And the Original is timeless for me and many other fans!

Movies like the original RHPS should NEVER be remade. It's like trying to remake Grease, you just CAN'T capture that magic again. I don't care what you say about there being a "chance" that you can, you can't. And that has been proven a LOT as far as remakes have been concerned. There are far more bad remakes than there are good ones. The good ones shine, the bad ones seem like a waste of money and they slowly sink into obscurity. Is that really what film makers want? It might be an easier project to make(considering most of the imaginative base has been completed), but it's a bigger gamble than releasing an original motion picture as far as staying power is concerned.

i agree....they shouldnt touch this movie. the original is definate a classic and should just be left alone.

Oh my god...Is there not one ORIGINAL idea in Hollywood anymore?? To even have the idea of remaking "RHPS" is absolutely moronic. To have the idea to do it without O'Brien or Curry or ANY of the original cast/creators is just beyond the pale. Fucking idiots is what they are.

What a FUCKING TRAVESTY this is. Remaking the most popular cult classic of all time. WHY???????????????????????????? I see no one , and I mean no one ,other than Tim Curry , Richard O Brien, Susan Sarandon and the rest of the entire original cast in these roles. A very ,very sad day for RHPS lovers everywhere.

So, why the hell did Sky Movies announce O'Brien's involvement when they knew he had no part in it? Why is it that studio heads can just blatantly lie about something like that? What the fuck? I feel awful for O'Brien.

A horror musical? Now? Just look at how fucked Repo is getting! What happened to him and Romero working together on that Zombie Band Musical? WTF?

Oh, and given that MTV's a co-financer, I'm sure we can expect the likes of a Justin Timberlake assuming the role of Dr. Frankenfurter. And no, I'm not joking.
