First Review: 'Last House on the Left' an Effective Remake?!
Friday, August 8, 2008

Last night Rogue Pictures held a very early test screening for their remake of The Last House on the Left, and from what we're told, the movie is actually pretty badass. But don't let me tell you about it, why not click here and read the first ever review for the film over at "Horror Movie a Day". LAST HOUSE is still in the testing process, which means that the final version could change drastically by the time it's released (no date has been given). The film follows John and Emma Collingwood, who are are on vacation at their lakeshore house when, by a bizarre twist of fate, they give shelter to the sociopaths who have just assaulted and nearly killed their daughter. Upon discovering the truth, they exact a chilling revenge on her attackers...

the orginal krug and company did kill her and her friend, how can it have the same gut punch if she survives?

Since this is from a backwater site I've never heard of, I'm taking this with a grain of salt. One of the things RottenTomatoes has proved to me is that some people will give even the worst films positive reviews. Hence, the lone ranger who gave "Meet the Spartans" a thumbs up. Poor guy.

"A backwater site"? The guy who runs that site with the review also reviews movies for this site all the time. He even posts on the message boards occasionally.

"'A backwater site'? The guy who runs that site with the review also reviews movies for this site all the time. He even posts on the message boards occasionally." Well, see I didn't know that. However, after you said that I scanned the site more and did recognize the profile pic of the person whom runs the site. With that said, I find many of the reviews on BD completely off according to my personal tastes. But anyway, it's good to hear this got a good review, but as I said in my previous post- anything and everything can get a good review or two nowadays.

yeah, this site has been around for a long while. it's not some "backwater site". i'm actually looking forward to this movie now. i agree w/ his review of the original. it's a movie i can watch once but that's it. with this new version it sounds like it has more entertaining (and still a bit disturbing. rape is NEVER non-disturbing).

The Original Most Disturbing Film of All Time! Last House On the Left very hard to Watch! Brutal!

I think the original is WAY overrated...so i doubt this could be that much better. I just hope they make that girl piss her pants again in this one. haha

I think the original was well-made for it's generation, with the 70's music and all, but I'm skeptical about it being made now because that feel will be gone. Also, the idea of it being toned down is annoying. I have no final say on what I think on it until I see it.

Ok stop with all the remakes!!!

I watched the original, and i is way overrated! I think the movie absolutley sucked! But it had potential, so maybe this one will grab the potential.

Backwater?!?!?! *spits tobaccy into a can and puts down banjo* Them's fightin' words! :). Anyway, I don't expect everyone to like it, and like djblack says, rape is never "not" disturbing. I guess it's mainly a more polished, less... ugly? version of the movie. It's not shot for shot like Psycho, but it's certainly not a complete redo like Dawn of the Dead. So if you just hated the general idea of the original, you'll probably hate this one too. But if you're like me, and more APPRECIATE the original than actually ENJOY it, you should be satisfied with this one, assuming they don't change it much for release. Some schmuck on IMDb is claiming that this movie will be NC-17 as is, and I very much disagree - it's no more graphic/violent than any Saw film, and I'd argue that the first Hostel is actually MORE graphic. Don't forget - most of the violence in the movie is inflicted on the villains; the innocent girls actually get off pretty easy in comparison.

That's lame. How can this be less graphic than Hostel? Hostel didn't show ANY of the gore AT ALL on screen. So much for disturbing horror. This makes me mad.

i don't think they needed to remake this film. it is great on its own and doesn't need hollywood-horror bullshit to cheapen its effect.

To Jacques-How can you say Hostel didn't show any gore? Achilles tendon severed, eye torn from socket, pus from eye socket, drill through thigh, fingers slowly cut off, throats slashed in front of a mirror, heads crushed with rocks, etc, etc... As far as the original Last House on the Left goes, there's room for improvement anyway. Consider it was essentially a remake in itself (a horror remake of 'The Virgin Spring').

I'm all for the "leave it to your imagination and it packs a bigger punch" horror gimmick. But that only works for a few really good directors and screenwriters. This (i know its just a preliminary review) seems like another great excuse to tone it down so studios can pack as many sheep into the theaters with a PG-13 rating. And with the rash of 'home invasion' movies I expect this to fall into the same homogenous zone of boredom as all the rest. Please God I hope I'm wrong.

How does ANYONE say HOSTEL had no gore????? ARE YOU SHITTING ME!! WHAT MOVIE DID YOU SEE ??? Anyway, this movie could use a modern update. It is disturbing, like watching a snuff film at times. It lacked alot (especially the godawful soundtrack),But they did a decent job with an early 70's budget. If done right, I could see this being a great film. I'll check it out.

DJ - its not PG-13... did you even read the review? It's not that they took out the violence; they just took out the EXCESSIVE violence (from the original). So no intestine pulling or dicks being bitten off. Everything else is there, and it's definitely an R film. There's no way you could do Last House as PG-13.

JG. I read it, but i still don't trust the studios anymore. And the cut he saw was still up for more editing. The thing that made last house stick with you was not so much the violence but the cruleness of it. Which by todays standards we cant do anymore. well mabey I'm just being a little girl about this one but that whole Midnite Meat Train thing has me pretty jaded right now.
