Dead or Alive, Shawnee Smith Returns Fifth 'Saw' Film
Thursday, August 7, 2008

One of the big secrets in all of Lionsgate's SAW films is who will be returning. With the fifth entry just around the corner (October 24), star Shawnee Smith chats about her return to the franchise, along with her toplining role in Sony's The Grudge 3. Read on for the skinny.

During an interview with Popwrap, Shawnee Smith confirms rumors that she is in fact SAW V, even though she never stepped a foot in the studio.

"That's what I hear," referring to the fact she's been told she's back in Lionsgate's SAW V. "I'm not sure how they keep resurrecting me, but somehow! If I'm in SAW V, it's something I'd already filmed, but I have no idea. This is horror, you're more valuable dead than alive."

Shawnee also chats a bit about her role in THE GRUDGE 3, where she reveals her surprise that a minimal amount of CGI was used.

"I figured they'd CGI her in!," she tells Popwrap. "I didn't know they were going to paint her up and have her chase me around a hospital for hours. It was not cool. Meanwhile the girl who plays Kayako is an absolute doll and I ended up becoming good friends with her. I wasn't expecting that."

GRUDGE 3 was directed by Toby Wilkins and follows a young Japanese woman who holds a secret to ending the curse of the Grudge. She travels to a haunted Chicago apartment building where she encounters a family battling to survive the ghosts. Together they confront the ghost of Kayako to save their souls from their impending tragic fate.

SAW V arrives in theaters October 24th. THE GRUDGE 3 is still looking for a DVD date.

This news of reoccurring characters is making me both skeptical and excited about Saw V. Whatever happens, it's certainly not predictable.

i LOVE Shawnee Smith!!! the 1st grudge movie really creeped me out, but the 2nd one was garbage. if (by some divine miracle) i ever see the Grudge 3, it will be for Shawnee. As for Saw V, i'd love to see Shawnee's character (Amanda) be alive still, but that's pretty inconceivable seeing how she got shot in the neck; probably just a bunch of flashbacks with her in them, which is ok enough i guess.

CAUTION SPOILERS It doesn't make sense how Jigsaw died in Saw III and then returns to Saw V. I have seen the 4th and yeah he says he'll still continue the game but it doesn't make sense. Shawnee Smith also returned when she died in Saw III. Doesn't make sense. Despite that I LOVE the Saw series and excited about the 5th and 6th. I'm also excited for The grudge 3 but not happy about the straight-to-DVD release.

I don't care if Saw 5 is one big flashback. Bring it on. One thing though. They need a dog flashback.

Jacques, I didn't think anything could make you skeptical about anything concerning "Saw".

What makes you say that? I love Saw, but that's only because it's had two solid directors behind it. Hackl could screw this up, hardcore. And this whole business of characters coming back, mainly Jigsaw, is starting to make me worry he has. To top that off, the lack of "strong" next to "violence" in the MPAA rating worries me that this may lack the violence I'm expecting. Overall, I'm more worried about this than I am excited.

Don't worry man, I'm not taking a shot at you, it's just a mere joke. I only made it at your expense because you seem to be a pretty big "Saw" fan (what are you guys called anyway? "Saw Seeners" or something?). With that said, I still can't understand how and/or why you enjoy "Saw IV". We need to seriously debate the quality of that film sometime.

Shawnee Smith is great. I doubt the final two Saw films are going to be any better than 2-4 which isn't a bad thing at all. As for The Grudge, the first one was pretty decent and the second one was somewhat terrible so I guess good luck with the third installment.

Jacques dont worry ur not the only one who liked saw 4.i did too.and i dont understand how ppl dont like it???personally i diddnt like 3...mainly because my friend spoiled the ending.but i was still shocked at the whole thing was amandas test because my friend diddnt spoil that part.and Jacques again ur rite about the whole hackl could mess up the movie OR it could make all the saw haters shut up.but i noticed even if a movie is good the people are gonna look for some ridiculous little things to bitch about.oh well.oh and dont forget that it mite not be a flashback at all...it could be a corpse cause one question was in my head during the teaser trailer and that how did strauhm go from locked medical room to waking up in the glass box trap in a totally different room???hoffman or maybe someone else?i doubt jill tuck.she mite be a victim in a trap.and i thought the film was gonna center around "Brit" not hoffman????

TheDeadMayTasteBad: I liked it because it had one of the best endings to a Saw film post-the original. Also, the gore was pretty refreshing compared the the generic seen-it-a-hundred-times stuff Hollywood is putting out. Add the intelgence of Rigg doing the opposite of the cliche and trying NOT to save people, and I say it was a thousand times better than the typical crap-horror I've seen all my life.

I actually like all of them for various parts...1 hands down had the best twist-holy cow my socks flew off! 2 had the best opening, but the lack of exciting traps depressed me a bit...3 had the most interesting lead char and some original traps, and 4 interesting flaskbacks and more back story. The order I like them in is 3, 1, 4, and 2. I mostly like 3 the best cuz I wrote a bad ass spec sequel, which would have been 4(probably why I didn't respond to well to it, but still liked it better than 2). Who cares about the haters anyway? Every franchise in every genre(even music) has em! What I want out of 5? my best trap to be in it...it's so bad ass!

maybe i'm wrong but for saw IV, events in saw III were intertwining with what was going on in saw IV, so while saw IV was going on saw III was going on at the same time, hopefully it makes sense, it adds up. the saw movies just keep getting better and better, adding twists and turns. grudge 3 better be good, i'm such a fan for asian horror, being asian myself, if anyone has any news on when it comes out on dvd, pls let us know ;)

This WILL sound retarded, but Amanda might be alive still in Saw V. The mysterious envelope may have something to do with it. Donnie Wahlburg (who played Eric Matthews) told everyone he wasn't in Saw III, but sure enough he was only saying that for the sake of suprising us! Shawnee Smith may be trying to do the same thing. I don't know, and hits highly unlikely, but we'll see!!!! Can't Wait for V.

@ saw rocks:i was thinkinf the same thing until yesterday when i was watching saw 4 and seeing the HUGE puddle of blood she was lying in.saying amandas still alive is like saying lynn denlon faked her death lol.but my question is who kidnapped Strauhm???cause his shirt in the teaser is the same as the one he wore in the fourth.i know it could be hoffman...but how about jill?it seemed she hated Strauhm while in the interrogation room.gordon seems a lil far fetched.of course hes still missing the police never actually found the bathroom or let alone the whole poison house thing.

@ Respect: Like I said, it's HIGHLY unlikely. And I havent the slightest clue who the hell put strahm wherever he is with the box on his head. But I can almost guarantee that Jill Tuck isn't an accomplice. At this point, we've been anticipating the return of Dr. Gordon so much that if he really does come back we wont be at all suprised. That would make for a shitty "twist" in SAW V...

@ saw rocks:yea i see wat ur saying.and now that i think about the whole jill thing its more unlikely than gordon.but i really hope that its not either of em cause i want the twist to be BIG!lol.oh and wat did u think of tracy(riggs wife)cause everytime rigg went by some test there was a pic of her on almost every box that would say something like "she needs you"or something.maybe she was abducted too cause when Strauhm was at riggs apt they were asking were his wife was and the swat ppl said they diddnt know and they cant reach her.and yea i totally agree wit the whole shitty twist about gordon.maybe they should just show gordon die in a trap so we could see his return but his death at the same time(like wat they did with matthews)

I think Rigg's wife is irrelevant to the story. The cops probably cant contact her because she's with her mom. The pics of her were just another part to showing Rigg that he can't save evryone and that not going with Tracy was the FIRST of many wrong choices he made. Maybe later on in SAW 6 she might return from her moms place and become part of the story, but I think we can forget about her in SAW 5.
