Box Office: 'Midnight Meat Train' Numbers Game
Sunday, August 3, 2008

By: MrDisgusting
Comments

Well horror fiends, the weekend in coming to a close and Box Office Mojo has reported that Lionsgate's The Midnight Meat Train has taken in an estimated $32,000 on 102 screens. Looks pretty bad doesn't it? Let's play the numbers game shall we? Tickets were between $1 and $2, an average ticket is between $11 and $12, that means it's safe to say the real numbers would be a multiple of 10. So, had Clive Barker's film opened in normal theaters, it would have made an estimated $320,000 on only 102 screens. It would have also averaged $3,000 per screen, which is on par with the heavyweights. A flop? I think not - and maybe I'm reaching a bit, but I think a statement was made... what do you think? Let's open this up to discussion.

I agree with you Mr. Disgusting. So is this it for MMT? Or will it still be playing next weekend?

Very nice! I'm shocked it made that much! I guess we really did make a statement. Can't wait to see it on Tuesday (bought tickets for a weekend show anyways). I'll probably be alone in the theater so that will suck. I remember everyone was talking big about how they were gonna see Hatchet. I drove 8 hours to see it (in a huge city) and I sat in the smallest, shittiest screen in the theater and was ALONE on a Saturday night. That sucked.

Here's the statement that was made: "Thank you, Lionsgate, for dumping a highly anticipated horror movie into a hundred, second-run, dollar theaters, thus guaranteeing that you wouldn't have to give it a proper release. Many of us gave you more money than you were asking for just to show you how much we appreciate it." You guys really didn't think that bean counters at Lionsgate hadn't already done the math and KNEW it couldn't make what it needed no matter what?? Even if there was an outright phenomenon of endless sold-out shows and media coverage (which there wasn't) at those theaters? This was an ill-advised, naive and misguided crusade that was doomed before it began. If anything, Lionsgate telling you to "get behind" the film was their way of manipulating you into giving them more $$ than they would have made otherwise. You helped the enemy. Way to go.

I would have gladly paid my 12 dollars to see MMT, but instead only paid 2.50 to see the film. Ill be seeing it again tonight so throw in another 5 dollars, my girlfriend and i always go to horror films together. I loved the movie, and hope that it will get rereleased or at least a premiere. IT DIDNT EVEN GET A PREMIERE, how messed up is that? the screenwriter told me he was going to BUY tickets to see it in a theater. neways, i agree on the math, i think the film would have done great if it were playing at bigger theatres. I think it would have done better, for example: The theatre i went to in Norwalk, CA had a sign out front for the films it was playing, it listed MMT as "MEAT". How the hell is anyone going to know what that is? or even be interested in seeing a film titled "Meat"? sounds like a porno. neways, i think even just the publicity of playing at bigger more popular theatres would have benefited MMT.

I think you're definitely reaching a bit. This reminds me a lot of what happened when Below (another fantastic movie) came out, and it went nowhere. You and I, and Lionsgate, know that if this film does find a decent fanbase it'll be on dvd. They've done all the math and don't give a shit about 30,000 bucks.

Can someone please tell me what kind of game this is? I looked at all the upcoming movies that have a release date on this site, and damn near all are going straight to video. What the hell is going on? Generally i like to actually see a movie before i buy it. The horror industry is not giving us a choice. Back in the day movies like Friday The 13th, Nightmare On Elm Street, little small movies like those made a killing at the box office. Now, fast forward to this time, more and more horror movies are being made again, like in the 80's. Horror + horror fans + all other human beings on the planet = Revenue, that means MONEY. Film studios, whoever gives the green light on what is to be released, they need to WAKE UP!! The dream is over! The unholy truth is HORROR MOVIES MAKE MONEY, PERIOD! I do not purchase movies i have not seen yet. What is even worse for me is that i live in a small midwest town. What that means is no culture, no events, and most important NO CHOICE! What ever your problem with Clive Barker is, get over it! Let go of the disputes, the grudges, whatever personnel is going on between Clive and the studio. Midnight Meat Train plus all of it's forthcoming brothers and sisters have the right to be born-distributed in large theaters. Do the right thing, open your eyes and minds, and give us what we want, the right to CHOOSE!

don't forget to keep in mind that advertising plays a big part in the film doing well! this movie was in a media blackout. nothing on the websites (no annoying pop ups), no reviews, nothing on the tv, basically nothing reaching out to people that might care if only they knew. i think there's missing dollars in the equation. most of the hardcore horror fans knew about the movie or barker/kitamura fans. one of my friends that went knew nothing about the movie and was surprised because he's a fan of everyone starring in the movie. he said if it wasn't for me, he would've had no idea about it. i think those numbers we're looking at are from the hardcore/base fans. not to mention, the venues they are playing in just might drive some viewers away...

look at 'the strangers' on the other hand (mr joe drake hate horror, eh?)... The Strangers opened in the United States and Canada on May 30, 2008 and in its opening weekend the film grossed $20,997,985 in 2,467 theaters, ranking #3 at the box office and averaging $8,514 per theater. As of June 23,2008 the film has grossed $50,067,445 in the U.S. alone exceeding industry estimates and is considered a box office success considering the production budget was a mere $9 million. hmmmm.....

Ahh, no. I wish it were a statement of strength, but it really isn't. The flaw is in the first part of your equation. The average US movie ticket is $7- not 11-12 (discount tix, matinees, date nights, child, senior, and student pricing included). So your 320K should really be 224K. Of that, the studio only nets a little over half (the rest is split between exhibitor, distro costs, and physical costs (shipping, etc). Even taking the full 224K as a base, though, it would have made about $2,175 a theater over three days- that's about $725 a day, or (given three showtimes a day)- $241 a showing. All that means that if MMT had been on 2000 screens, with the same level of attendance multimplied out, about 34 people would have attended each showing. Common theater profit ratio is 90 heads a show- meaning this film would have come considerably short.

I saw it in Cincinnati and the theatre was about 1/4 full. That was friday at 7:50. I was very surprised at that number of people being there on opening night, considering the only place I have ever seen this movie advertised is on this site. That makes me think that at least a hand full of those people were undecided movie goers who decided to give it a chance. With a title like "The Midnight Meat Train", a cool poster, and the fact that it is a rated R horror movie it is an interesting choice wether or not you have ever even heard of Clive Barker. I think just based on that it would have been at least a moderate hit, now add in some t.v. ads and create a little buzz and who knows? Lionsgate couldn't have been disapointed with the final product. If they were I wonder what they were expecting?

I had a lot of complaints about the advertising as well. Then a couple friends and I went to see The Dark Knight at which we saw a trailer for Midnight Meat Train. I can't speak for any other cities, but when I think of the multitude of people in my city going to see The Dark Knight, I'm pretty certain plenty of people here knew about it.

Actually Mr. Disgusting, your figures are wrong. The average price of a movie ticket is $6.88, not $11, not $12. Now, cheap theater prices (dollar theater prices) are 2.76. Now, let ME do the math for you. First off, if it only got released on 102 REGULAR theaters, it would take in $79768.12. Lets consider that an average movie gets released to about 3750 theaters (I couldn't find an exact figure on this one, but most are between 3500 and 4000). After multiplying this, we get $2,932,651.32. Check my numbers if you want, but only about 3 million isn't that impressive. I think all you did was give money to lionsgate.

Needless to say, I went last night and brought along 5 of my friends. If we bitch and complain about this film, but then SAW 5 comes out and they make the money--how does that show them anything? Do you all think that they're scratching their pointy heads and saying, "Hey--this is our film-we made it--if we want to release for a nickel-we release it for a nickel..." I think it's a fucking sin that this film got the shaft when candyass crap like the Prom Night remake got a huge release. Was someone at Lionsgate snoozing when this piece, written by one of horror's masters slid across the desk? What happened to the balls they had when they were handling House of 1000 Corpses & Devil's Rejects? Here was their chance to have something new all over again, and not only do they blow it, but they fuck over millions of fans. Hey, the Weinsteins didn't take over Lionsgate while no one was looking, did they?

I knew about MMT a long long time ago I think i saw it on the cover of a fangoria mag. The fact is this Lionsgate has it's head shoved so far up it's ass that it just releases anything and everything that has a tit and some blood in it. The problem with that is that it's all white noise to them and therefore movies that just shouldn't get the push that they do get it and ones that probabaly should go straight to video. Quite frankly regardless of what you do Lionsgate is still going to make money off of you. Which comes down to the point of all movie companies. you can complain all you want but you are still going to buy it. wether it's Lionsgate or Warner Bros. if you like the movie regardless of how it was released you are going to put your money down on it. Now yeah there are less legal alternatives to spending the money, which I for one am very thankful for. 9 times out of 10 I know if something is going to be a waste of my time and money but every once in awhile I'm wrong. but through the wonders of downloading I have avoided paying out the price of a dvd for something i would've have been pissed to have owned. But if a movie is intriguing enough regardless of a fancy marketing campaign, and wide theatrical release, and press coverage people will go see it. The numbers posted by another member on this topic for The Strangers don't lie. The Strangers were every where you looked and millions went out and saw it I among them and it sucked horribly. But I've been psyched for MMT for awhile and I will definitely (if I can find a showing around here) spend the $2 to go see it. I personally would rather see it in a smaller theater where I'm not getting gouged for everything and with less people to ruin my experience. If there is a fanbase (which even though the numerical figures may not look the best there still seems like quite a few people went to see it) it will be out on dvd. I noticed a few people call Lionsgate the enemy and well you have to look at from the stand point of unless your just stealing it all your giving them your money anyway so why complain about it.

when calculating the math for attendance and revenue you have to take into account that your average limited release will be concentrated in urban centers where the films will have the greatest chance of attracting an audience. Lionsgate PURPOSELY CHOSE theaters well outside these lucrative markets. The film is playing almost exclusively in shitty little theaters way out in the distant suburbs. The head count for the weekend would have EASILY been double what they did this weekend and with all the buzz surounding this film, I have no doubt it would have found an audience and made a decent run with good word of mouth. The point is that Lionsgate (and specifically Mr. Joe Drake, who was the genius who greenlit the film Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium) obviously do not give a shit about the fans and have let their petty internal politics take precedent over their obligation to their shareholders and the dedicated horror fans who helped build their stupid little half ass studio. THEY ARE DEAD TO ME.

The people who are posting that 32,000 is bad are completely missing the point of this article... of course it's bad. It played in a hundred discount theatres, not one in a major city, where you could by tix for a buck. So 32,000 is actually pretty damn good.

THERE IS A HUGE PROBLEM WITH MR. DISGUSTING'S LOGIC ABOVE! That tally of $32,000? That's including all the multiple tickets sold to Mr. D and how many other fans they talked into buying in excess as well! Therefore, you CAN NOT use those numbers to justify anything...PERIOD. It's a false statistic! If the movie had been released in other theaters, and they were paying $7-$10 each, does anyone really believe they would have bought more than one ticket apiece? NOT LIKELY. At least not nearly the same amount! So the numbers absolutely do not reflect what the outcome would have been like in another theater release setting. Now with that said, I DO think the movie would have made more if released wider, because more people would have a chance to hopefully see it...but as with any horror movie these days, it's a gamble. The bulk of their money made is in the home video market.

Lionsgate screws its investors out of $3.5 Million Dollars! By SpookyDan This is a purely speculative guess at numbers, and will make no change to the fact that Midnight Meat Train made $32,000 Box office gross, for it’s opening weekend. (a second opinion to Mr. Disgusting’s post) The facts: Lionsgate head Joe Drake pulls Midnight Meat Train’s (previously announced) May Release Date, opening up May to The Strangers; A Joe Drake produced horror film. The Strangers rakes in 21 Million opening weekend. Let’s do the math (based on figures at boxofficemojo) MMT opened in second run theaters with NO ADVERTISING on 102 screens The Strangers opened in “normal” theaters with loads of Advertising behind it on 2477 screens MMT made $32,000 and a $93 per screen average. Strangers made 21 Million and a $8514 per screen average. Had MMT opened in “normal theaters” with no advertising and the same amount of ticket sales, an average ticket cost at second run theater: $1.50/$32,000=21333 tickets sold) Average “normal theater” ticket cost $7.00 x 21333 = $149,333 WITHOUT ADVERTISING MMT could have made a $1464 per screen average Now, to be fair if the total # of screens that MMT was released on, was equal to The Strangers (2477) than at $1464(per screen) x 2477(screens) = $3,626,328. 3.6 Million - WITHOUT ADs is pretty damn impressive! We can agree that with a proper ad campaign behind the film it would have made more. The fact that it was in the out of the way theaters and not in major cities certainly helped squash a major part of the box office revenue out. In my analogy, I would guess that at its worst the film could have made about $3.6 million. At that number, it would have come in around #6 for the weekend. Beating out the X Files Movie in its second week So how much money did Lionsgate screw its investors out of after all of this? $3,594,000 total box office dollars! I saw it here in Mesquite, Tx and I LOVED this movie. I'd heard about it months and months ago though so I didn't really have any complaints about the advertising. Granted, it wasn't being shoved down people's throats like many other films and it definitely isn't getting the proper treatment from Lionsgate, but take it for what it is: a chance, no matter how shitty, for those of us who care to see it on the big screen before buying it on dvd. I wouldn't give up having seen it in the dumpy, odd smelling theater I've never even been for anything because it was totally and completely worth the long wait. Stop worrying about what the movie made or didn't make. Appreciate it for being different from the boatloads of crap passing for "horror" in theaters nowadays and join the cult following. We're fans whether Lionsgate likes the film or not, it's that simple.

$10-$12 for an average movie?!! Where in the world does anyone spend that much money on an average theater? Most of the theaters around my area charge around 7 or 8... egads! But then, there are absolutely no dollar theaters around here either... in order to see MMT I would have to drive 8-9 hours south. Would love to see this on the big screen, but I just don't think Lionsgate has any sort of expectation for this film.

Just imagine the theatrical rollout meeting after they decided upon this "strategy" at Lionsgate: Joe Drake: So, did you line me up some really bad theatres? Distribution Head: Well... they're kinda bad. Joe Drake: (looks at list) Too classy! I told you I want this turd booked into the lowest, skankiest, filthbowls imaginable. Can't we crowbar the boards off a grindhouse or something? Distribution Head: (points at list) That one in Kansas is next to a crackhouse. Joe Drake: Fail! It should be IN the crackhouse...(phone rings) hang on, I gotta take this...Hey Doug, my man, what's the word? Nah, nothing important, just some bullshit...so anyways, what's the word on those Strangers grosses in Somalia? Sweet...

You know, the movie open it more then just 102 movie theatres cause your list was not totally correct. But had it open normally for tix going for 7-9 dollars per person,it still doesn't mean that it wouldn't have flopped.Yeah,it would have made more money more then likely, but it probably would have made just as much as the remake of halloween.Do I think its kinda bs that they released it in the dollar theatre??No,not really,I think its pretty cool for those people to see a brand new movie without waiting 3 months later after its released.I am surprised such films as bloodrayne get wide release and this doesn't.I know we all want the movie to do well cause its a horror movie and whatnot or for whatever reasons we or you guys might have.Hopefully they get their shit together and release this around halloween so it can try to make its money back that way.

To me, Lionsgate is just blind not giving MMT the exposure it deserves. Lionsgate has released a number of horror films that have successful. The Descent was awesome. Bug made me want to take 3 showers in a row. The Saw series has found success. And now its as if they never had any faith in this movie, whose genre is the same genre where they practically always have success.

I dunno if someone said this already but I doubt people would have purchased 10 tickets etc if they were at regular price... Just something to consider when doing the math...

I just saw it today here in Phoenix, AZ and there were about 20 people in the theater. A lot more than I expected too see...especially during an early afternoon showing. I thought the movie was great! Does anybody have an idea why Lionsgate is doing this?

yeah, read some of these back posts. It explains everything. Basically, Lionsgate's new prez is shitting all over (Except Saw 5)any horror flick he didn't develop.

I live in Small Town Colorado. Our theater charges 9.50 a ticket. They haven't sold a regular ticket here for less than 9 dollars in three years. We have no dollar theater, although there is one thirty miles away. They charge 3.50 a ticket. No, they weren't showing MMT. So Lion's Gate fucked me on my Clive Barker intake. I'm as confused as everyone else, I don't understand how Clive went from being one of the most prolific horror inventors to a thing that needs to be hidden in the backwoods theaters. Oh well, I'll just let Lion's gate bend me over for the DVD.

Ok. I live in San Francisco. The closest theatre that's listed online as playing the movie is an hour away, then an hour and a half, then 2 hours. Me and a friend drove over an hour to a theatre to see it. NOT SHOWING! It's listed on multiple sites, but when you show up, the movie is not showing. At ANY of the theatres. So in the entire SF Bay area, this moving is not showing within 100+ miles. There's seriously something fuckin wrong with that.
