This past weekend's San Diego Comic Con was filled with all sorts of surprises, and the news just won't stop coming in. B-D stringer Jeff Otto had the opportunity to chat one-on-one with Robert Englund, who played the infamous Freddy Krueger in eight films and a TV series (and almost a reality show). Inside, the actor discusses Freddy's future slashing possibilities, even though most have been left in the dust.
Bloody-Disgusting sat down with Robert Englund at Comic-Con for an exclusive chat about two new projects he has upcoming -- Zombie Strippers (with Jenna Jameson) and the Evil Dead-esque Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer. More to come on those two projects shortly, but first we wanted to bring you what Freddy Krueger himself had to say about the future of his trademark character.
"The most recent rumor I've heard that has legs is that Michael Bay is going to produce a remake of the original Nightmare on Elm Street through Warner Bros.," Englund told Bloody-Disgusting.
We asked Englund whether he would be up for playing Freddy in the remake. "Well I doubt it because I made Nightmare on Elm Steet. That's me. This is a remake of the original and I'm sure they want to take advantage of the new special effects to exploit the dream landscape and that they would want to reinterpret everything. I would hope that they would. I would hope that Freddy doesn't look like me. I would hope that maybe he's wearing janitor's overalls and maybe he has an old baseball hat on instead of my fedora. Let a new actor reinterpret it. That's the fun of remaking it. Obviously he needs to be burned and disfigured. That's part of the myth. Obviously there needs to be a Nancy and there needs to be this back story, but it should look different."
"A lot of people are worried about all the remakes -- if ever there was a film franchise that could stand a remake [it's Elm Street]. [There is] so much of the movies that takes place in the dreams, the nightmare, in that landscape of the mind which is very surreal. This is a perfect place to exploit CGI and really embrace that. I'm all for it. If they want to ask me to play the dream analysis expert, that would be fun."
John McNaughton, director of the classic Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, has also been mentioned as a potential director for a Nightmare prequel almost a year ago. "I heard there's a prequel script," England confirmed. "[That's] a great idea. There's a lot there and I would love to be asked to do that because I think I can still play Freddy out of makeup."
A Freddy Vs. Jason sequel has been on the table for some time now, with possibilities ranging from strictly Freddy Vs. Jason tangling mano a mano once more or throwing down with the addition of Halloween's Michael Myer's or even Evil Dead's Ash. "There is no Ash," says Englund. "That's off the table because I think Raimi is remaking Evil Dead."
"They were talking to John Carpenter which leads me to believe they would bring Michael Myers into the mix somehow. I had heard one great story about maybe making it a little bit period [and] still having Jamie Lee Curtis alive as an adult and having her move somehow with a young Christina Ricci niece or something into Springwood. Then of course we could all be there and go after her."
I hope the Nightmare remake's Freddy looks different, I agree with England. I hope Michael Myers gets thrown into the mix of the ongoing Freddy vs. Jason.
even though i am sad that robert aint going to be in the remake now i kinda understand why he dont want to be in it.....i mean since it is a REAMKE which still ticks me off about.......they should do a prequel.....that would be coolt o see a freddy vs jason bs michael....i thought they were doing a evil dead four???
i dont think i could ever see a new interpretation of freddy if a new nightmare on elm street movie should be made cause i will always see robert england as freddy, i do totally agree with horrorchick81 tho it would be really cool to see a freddy prequal, and i have always dreamed of a jason vs micheal movie that would kick ass and with freddy in the mix it would be more awesome! but i think old jason could easily kill old micheal in my opinion lol but maybe if its the new jason and new micheal that would seriously be a fight!
COOL! Hey at least Michael would be back in a SEQUEL, no remake! The idea of jamie moving to springwood is... AWESOME!!! She be all like MICHAEL!!!! I'VE FACED YOU ONCE OR TWICE BUT THIS IS ENOUGH! Michael would be all... ... ....... (... means breathing) then Jason would come in and stab michael, and michael would turn around and push jason to the wall. Then freddy would come in and be all..... How many bitches would live in this house.. BTW THIS IS HAPPENING ON 1428 ELM. Then Micheal stabs Freddy but freddy claws michael in the chest. Then jamie is all THIS IS MY BROTHER LET ME TAKE CARE OF IT. And jason gets up and pushes Jamie... YAY that's all I got but it sounds AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! They should have a scene where chucky walks in and Jason breaks him in half LOL
hahah, they wont change the look of freddy to much. maybe the color of his sweater, I think the hat needs to stay, just do the make up differently...i cant wait either way
what i cant figure out is how much new line is paying him to go out of his way to say thay a remake of nightmare is a good thing, not casting robert is a good thing, and that robert thinks both ideas is a good thing, come on, i dont buy it one second, this is a man who has been begging to play freddy one more time in the prequel for years now, and he talked about freddy for f v j for over 10. he isnt even bothering to put the pressure on to cast him by saying what everyone knows, he is the only one who can and should do it. it reeks of a payment job to me
ya know who would make a good Freddy?
Christopher Nelson! He's big, strong, has worked in the biz for a long time and can really bring a lot out of a character through make-up!
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1418898/
(i'm just sayin')
Amazing how much more he actually cares about the character un-like people like Kane Hodder who are only happy if it is them in the role. Robert understands the way remakes work, thank god.
I thought
'Freddy vs. Alien vs. Jason vs. Re-Animator vs. Ash vs. Pinhead vs. Chucky vs. Candyman vs. Icecream man vs. Frankenstein vs. Wolfman vs. Bride of the Atom' was his next projec!?!?!?
Thats what he SAID was going to happen!!! It has to be true!!!
That idea is crap, jamie died and we've all seen it, stop screwing storie lines, what they should is get freddy to hire michael as an acomplyse because hes too weak to defeat jason by himself cuz he wont die, so freddy infiltrates michales dream by imitating jamie like he did with jasons mother, and makes michael believe that jamie is still alive in springwood, but when michael gets to springwood he gets caught in the battle with freddy and jason unkowinly because freddy lied to him and he realises its only a dream and joins the battle until halloween ends.
btw can someone help clarify me on the end of fvj... when jason walked out with freddys head, where was that??? if freddys had heas head cut off hes obviously dead, and it looked all mysty and peaceful and dreamscape like, so maybe they could have it that jason and freddy are stuck in dreamscape.... cuz it looked like a dreamscape of crystle lake at the end...
OKIES THIS IS IT!!!! what they should have is that freddy and jason are still stuck in dreamscape, but cuz jason doesn't die freddy cant kill him but he wont wake up, so hes constantly in freddys dreamscape land, but cuz halloween is over, michael sleeps in halloween until the next one, so freddy infiltartes michaels mind by imitating jamie and getting him to come into the dreamscape land to try and kill jason, but michael figures out that freddy lying by only imitating to be jamie and joins the battle against both of them, but then michael wont wake up til next halloween so it just keeps going!!!
They way Englund talks about the remake it starts to make sense to me. Not the CGI part (that is obvious) but having a brand new Freddy who also looks different. That way they could never ruin or damage the original Freddy Krueger BUT if the new Krueger works out well we could have 2 great franchises that compliment each other. Perhaps the new Kruger will be called just Fred and not Freddy, minor detail but that way we could more easily separate the 2 Kruegers in discussions. I mean the Halloween remake became obsolete for many cause it tried to re-do the original but if the new Nightmare films use a fresh way of showing it it could be real fun
If they remake this we'll never see Englund as freddy anymore. if would then make this interesting sounding prequel it will be a prequel to the remake. I for one don't want to see the remake.
