This morning we scored the first casting news for Modercine's latest Jack Ketchum adaptation, Offspring, which will be directed by Andrew Van Den Houten. OFFSPRING features veteran actor of film and television Art Hindle (The Brood, Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and actress Polyanna McIntosh, with Tommy Nelson, Spencer List, Michael Biehn and John Savage rounding out the cast. Read on for the press release.

MODERNCINÉ, director/producer ANDREW VAN DEN HOUTEN, and critically acclaimed horror author JACK KETCHUM reunite to bring one of the author’s most haunting and gruesome tales to the big screen. “Who’s the scariest guy in America? Jack Ketchum, quite simply, is one of the best in the business,” says literary master of the macabre Stephen King.

Adapted for the screen by author JACK KETCHUM, who broadened the landscape of our worst nightmares with such stories as “The Lost,” “The Girl Next Door,” and “Red,” comes this shocking tale of rural horror adapted by the master storyteller himself – OFFSPRING. Something deadly has returned to the woods and seaside cliffs of Dead River, Maine. An evil thought to have been exterminated has returned with their insatiable appetite for human flesh. David and Amy Halbard’s family and their house guests are about to come face to face with a blood-thirsty pack of wild children lead by a woman, the last survivor of a primitive, cave-dwelling tribe of predatory savages. The only one who can possibly save them and put an end to the reign of terror is retired sheriff George Peters.

Directed by VAN DEN HOUTEN and screenplay by KETCHUM, OFFSPRING’s cinematographer and producer is William M. Miller, with a score by Ryan Shore and special effects by Anthony Pepe. OFFSPRING features veteran actor of film and television ART HINDLE (The Brood and Invasion of the Body Snatchers) as George Peters and actress POLLYANNA MCINTOSH as Claire. Young TOMMY NELSON plays the heroic Luke and his co-star SPENCER LIST, who stars opposite Michael Biehn and John Savage in the upcoming “Malevolence: Bereavement,” is the sinister Rabbit.

That doesn't sound like the book, except for the "wild children". Why change the story? If the studio cant handle it, fuck em', it shouldn't be made if they are just gonna fuck up the story. Come on Jack, don't compromise your work again!

To Fuadramses725--wait wat? I thought that was what the book was about.. The more important question would be why arent they making the first one. anyways as long as he keeps it close to the level of violence that is in the story this will be great

Been awhile since I read the novel, but I remember it being brutal as fuck. Not sure how much that synopsis differs from the book, anymore. What's cool is that he based the book around an actual historical tale.

I'm not sure why they would film the sequel and not the original "Off Season"?? Talk about brutal as fuck violence....and I only read the 1981 edited version.

Ketchum fans have been waiting a while for an "Off Season" movie, but has anyone ever wanted to see an "Off Spring" movie? Not that I recall. There's far more interesting books out there from Ketchum that are screaming for their own movie. Ladies Night. Only Child. Cover. Joyride. Old Flames. Or anything from his Peaceable Kingdom collection.

Why do all of Ketchum’s books follow the same film formula: watered down script + low rent production company + bizarre foreign investors + no name director + no name young actors + one old Hollywood actor in the twilight of their career = mediocre direct to video movie

Not all of Ketchum's books are turned out as no-budget, no-name actor vehicles. Red starred Brian Cox for instance and was originally directed by Lucky McKee. The Lost was decent for a no-budget, no-name actor/director vehicle but not fantastic. Unfortunately, The Girl Next Door came across as an unintelligeable copy of American Crime (despite coming out first). Consider while American Crime cast Catherine Keener as its main antagonist, the best the producers for The Girl Next Door could do was the floozy sister from Sixteen Candles. I have high hopes for Ladies Night, but I suspect that Stuart Gordon will never get around to it and as for Off Season, we may never see it. The best we will get is the toned down sequel, which will mostly be received as a Wrong Turn/Hills Have Eyes ripoff.

um, did u miss the "+ one old Hollywood actor in the twilight of their career" part of the formula? anyway - i too have high hopes for a LADIES NIGHT movie but i doubt it'll ever happen.

I wouldn't say Brian Cox is in the twilight of his career. He's still popping up all over the place (his career is similar to that of Morgan Freeman in that sense, not really getting big until late age). I don't think he did Red because he needed the money. I think he just wanted to work with McKee. I would say that his costar Sizemore is at the end of his career though.

Shit. I meant Off Season, not Offspring. Never read the sequel. My bad. (Pees on a government agent.)

After I first read Off Season (which I loved), I thought "there's one we won't be seeing at the movies anytime soon"! Maybe they aren't doing Off Season becasue it is so graphic, they're afraid if they stay close to the book, it wouldn't pass the MPAA. If it did, it would have to be so trimmed down, it would suck.

"Off Season" is definitely one of the best reads in modern horror, but even when taking into consideration the graphic quality of the text, there is still no excuse in my mind to make a film of "Offspring" without its predecessor.

I apologize, i meant Off Season. I have never read the sequel, but i agree with everyone that this is a strange move by Ketchum and the studio. Why would you make the sequel first? What if Lucas had made Empire before a New Hope? It wouldn't add up. This is just weird.

I never bothered to read Offspring. I am not sure why that is being made into a film instead of Off Season. I know that there is some material in that book that could not be represented on screen. Too graphic and violent for a theatrical release. I enjoyed the characters of Off Season. I didn't bother with Offspring because they only brought back the Sherrif. Not looking forward to seeing it be made into a film. How about Beast House by Richard Laymon

Actually, the crew making Offspring has chosen to do so because the characters in the latter novel are more developed. Jack is actually very excited and will play a bit part in the film. If the people on here knew how excited and eager the crew is to shoot this film they might think otherwise. I believe this will be a stand alone flick, like all other Modercine pics. Instead of sitting on your asses waiting for something to happen, how 'bout you go make the films you want to see?

WE should go MAKE the films we want to see?? Uh...OK....

If Van Den Houten knows what he is doing, he will cast Erick Kastel in this film. He was, without a doubt, the best thing about Headspace. His acting completely MADE that movie worth my time. So good, I actually bought the film for my collection. I understand that working with a smaller budget you have to find ways to cut costs, but he is one actor worth whatever it takes, to get him involved in the project.

I own "Off Season." The reason it hasn't been made is because the budget to make it right is several million dollars. Anyone who knows this book knows that there are aspects in it that make financing problematic, but we'll get it made sooner-or-later and when we do it will satisfy its audience.

They need to start making movies from the TRUE master of horror, Ricard Laymon. I mean all of his books read like cheesey 80's horror movies anyway. They actually did make "In the Dark" into a movie but it is SUPER rare, they played at some film festival and was never officially released. As for this article, id be happy to see this movies when it comes out, I have read "Offseason" and "Offspring" they were both very violent and gory and im sure this movie will be too. It is kind of stupis that they went straight with the sequel though....
