SDCC '08: Robert Englund Cameo in 'Elm Street' Remake?

Some fun back-and-forth love at the San Diego Comic Con this weekend as A Nightmare on Elm Street remake news heated up. Platinum Dunes revealed to Bloody-Disgusting that they have yet to reach a deal with New Line Cinema to remake the film, but still, Englund says if they remake the film, he'd love to make an appearance. Dunes Producer Brad Fuller's response? "We'd love to have him!" So even if there's a new Freddy Krueger, maybe we'll still get a sweet cameo from the legend himself. Wesley Strick was recently signed on to pen the remake, which centers on Krueger, a serial child killer murdered by angry parents, who returns with a burnt face and a razor glove to terrorize teens in their dreams.

Englund didn't say anything about wanting to play Kruerger though? Oh well, they will need to come up with their own Heith Ledger like surprise perforance to make this work. A lot of people are going to be PPIIISSSSSEEEDDD. I don't really care tha tmuch though.

I am sorry but A Nightmare on Elm Street was made the movie it was because of Robert Englund's preformance. You can remake movies where the killer was silent (like Jason and Michael Myers) But when you have a witty, sadistic killer...its all about the acting and I personally do not think anyone else can do it justice.

To some extent, I agree, Inga. Unlike other horror movie monsters, ESPECIALLY Michael Myers and Jason(both who were portrayed by DIFFERENT actors), Englund ALWAYS played Freddy, even up to recent(FvJ). Freddy isn't a silent stalker, he has a personality, even during the time he was dark and serious(the first couple of movies) prior to him becoming a joker. It would take someone special to at least meet Robert up to par with his performance as Krueger.

I do think he's the only real Freddy and to have a Freddy in a possible remake that's even half as great as Englund's is it'll take one hell of an actor. But I also think if we can't have Englund as Freddy, which would be a shame, a cameo sounds nice.

It depends on what Freddy people are looking for too. In the original, he wasn't really funny. He actually lost a lot of his "Scare Factor" when he started to become comical. Personally I'd like to see Freddy become dark again. Just my two cents.

I think It can be done. Englund has a Big spot in my heart. i loved him growing up but this If you find someone special. Ala Heath ledger as the Joker. This could work. Its a shame he's dead becouse Ledger would have made a hell of a Joker. Someone like Patrick Wilson would Be perfect.

Robert Englund was great as Freddy. But to assume no one could do it aswell or better is pretty silly. I love Robert, but you are essentially saying no other actor can live up to Robert Englund, and that is.... silly at best.

Inga

I wished that he had stayed darker as well. But I dont think a remake is the answer. If hollywood cant keep they're mits out of old horror movies...Let them remake really old obscure ones like some of the european ones that never really made it here in the states. Some had really good story lines and were creepy....they would find a new audience...like how some of the Asian horror has done? Just an idea?

No Jerkofwonder, what I am saying is he made that role what it is...I dont feel it needs to be redone.

I do believe its time for a change.Robert cant be scary as Freddy anymore,he's played a watered down Freddy for too long and he's too familiar to be scary but he shouldn't belittle himself by playing a cameo.Platinnum Dunes are the wrong people for this movie so i really hope someone else gets the job.

Birkhill, you got that right. From what I hear, Platinum Dunes would hire Shannon and Swift back for the remake. That means more stupid humor. The guy they have writing the remake draft is actually more experienced that Shannon and Swift, especially regarding drama and suspense. I'm sure he can make a more serious psychological NOES remake than the grusome twosome, and that would be worth it. The first NOES was never just your average hack'em/slash'em slasher movie. It was smarter than your average slasher, and relied more on psychological jolts and mindfuck techniques. It takes a true master to make you question whether or not it's a dream or reality! If you want the campy "big breasted nude chicks getting fucked and killed", you'd be disappointed with the NOES series. It's never been about that. That's more Ft13 style.

Wow, breaking a story the entire world predicted a year ago. Of course Englund will cameo. Its a bad remake's way of showing its "street cred." Get this off Platinum Dunes and Michael Bay's hands and into the hands of people who actually give a shit.

I think it's cool that Englund is willing to let someone else take on the role that he is best known for while still willing to do a cameo. That's like Stallone letting somebody else play Rambo while he does a brief appearance as another guy. Not many actors would do that.

i agree with u inga noone else can play freddy...there is no need for another nightmare on elm street without englund.

Lets hope the movie bombs and these guys get insult after insult throwing there way for making one too many remakes. This is exactly what I was talking about, England is being paid to say those things to try and ease over the fan reaction of him not being in the role, hey if England is ok with it, then we should be right? Wrong, England doing a cameo is almost as bad as him not playing Freddy.

jnhfreddy

englund is freddy nobody can replace him this is one movie that SHOULD NEVER EVER be remade it is the ultomate classic and i agree that the movie was as big as it was due to englunds acting and wes cravens brilliance its gona be a dark day if this movie is remade

No Englund, no Freddy. Fucking period!

The only way this will work is if they make Fred Krueger into a silent killer like Jason only burned instead of a mask. I would change the hat, lose the sweater, and keep the glove.

I will ONLY watch this if Robert plays Freddy. PERIOD. Freddy is only freddy if it's robert- and that's final.

How many times do the TRUE FANS have to say it? Leave NOES ALONE!!! Gods who do they think is going to line their pocket books by putting out this trash? Keep PD out of it and all others for that matter they have proved time and time again they don't care and they just want to try and make a fast buck. These are characters people grew up with and if you screw those over you get a big zero at the box office. Keep the egos out of it listen to the fans and stop the remake business!!

that would be great, but there's a mistake, platinum dune knows that it won't make this remake. it seems that NL will do it byitself!

with out Robert, EVERY body knows this film will fail very bady, my sugestion is that they should do anything they can to get him to play Freddy, other wise i can see alot of very pissed off people, and NL losing ALOT of money

guys, this is better this way... what happens when englund dies??? then they're just gonna make another movie and put someone else in it, at least if they do the remake now... we know englund approved, and that he felt it was right, and when he does pass, the new guy can carry on englunds work, its how im seeing it...
