This weekend we caught up with Platinum Dunes - who is showing the first footage from FRIDAY THE 13TH this afternoon at the San Diego Comic Con - who updated Bloody-Disgusting on all of their upcoming projects including NEAR DARK and THE BIRDS. Read on for the skinny.
Brad Fuller tells us the following updates on their films:
-NEAR DARK: The project is currently on hold.
-THE BIRDS: Martin Campbell is finishing a new story outline right now.
ROSEMARY'S BABY: They're zeroing in on a writer as the writers continue to pitch (Paramount).
BUTCHERHOUSE CHRONICLES: It was revealed exclusively to Bloody-Disgusting that Paramount Pictures is prepping this film noir, which contain numerous action piece, with Platinum Dunes. It's a really dark project and a director will be announced soon.
I was rather skeptical of THE BIRDS, but Martin Campbell may be able to deliver the goods. Though he's had some clunkers (THE LEGEND OF ZORRO), he's also delivered two topnotch James Bond films (GOLDENEYE, CASINO ROYALE) and THE MASK OF ZORRO. Not horror, of course, but exciting, enjoyable, well-made films nonetheless. The presence of an accomplished veteran director makes me at least a littl optimistic. Pity aboput NEAR DARK, and we'll have to wait and see with ROSEMARY'S BABY.
I could care less about any of these films, I want the Friday the 13th footage. The Birds, I hope this isn't a remake of the original film or even anything to do with it. I'm sure that it is though.
The Birds could be great if they kept the same premise, but changed the storyline as if it was it's own. I've seen Near Dark, it could be a cool remake or it could flat-out suck, but I want F13 footage!!!
i agree, The Birds could be a decent film. i'm thinking of the crow scene in Res Evil:Extinction. take that scene (crow/birds) and multiply it by 1000 and this could be intense! the CGI crows in Extinction looked great (and i usually HATE CGI).
I've been fairly impressed with the Dunes' remakes thus far, but I would like to see some original horror projects. I'm sure Nispel probably has an idea or two of his own that they could fund for him.
Not really gonna comment on the other remakes, I'll just close my eyes and pretend the Birds doesn't exist when it's released.
Platinum Dunes may not be original, but lets face it, they have amazing re-imaginings of classic horror movies that are both true to the original and dark/disturbing by their own rights. They bring a fresh spin to the campy 80s slasher movies that we all grew up with (well, some of us). I challenge any other horror hounds out there to do a better job - these guys obviously love the genre.
"NEAR DARK: The project is currently on hold."...thank god. man what's next fucking remake..JAWS?
