Wow. I'm a little disappointed, but mostly pleased. Now for everyone's favorite... A TRACK BY TRACK REVIEW!!!!
1. A New World Organ
Uh... It's just Geneco in different languages. I suppose it's supposed to introduce Geneco and how it's popular all around the globe.
2. At The Opera Tonight
This song is amazing. It's based off the song "Choice" from the original stage adaption (Where the line "At the Opera tonight" is replaced with "What will you choose?"). I really like the drums in this. The drums from the original sounded like they had come from one of those beginner keyboards for kids. These heavy drums suit the song much better. During Paris Hilton's one small part in this song, I can't say I hated her. My only problem with this song is Anthony Head's (Nathan Wallace/Repo Man) vocals. They are changed since the teaser we saw at the 2007 Scream Awards. I preferred the vocals used in the trailer where Anthony is singing in his normal range, whereas this version has more of the gravelly voice from the line "I'll sweep the streets clean". Beyond that I think this song may grow to be the one Repo is remembered by.
3. Zydrate Anatomy
This one is a catchy tune. It's mainly sung between Grave Robber (Terrance Zdunich) and Amber Sweet (Paris Hilton). Terrance Zdunich completely owns this song (not pwned, owned) when he sings. This is most likely because he composed all the music alongside Darren Smith for the original stage play, which he also appeared in, once again as, you guessed it, Grave Robber. Since this is appears to be Terrance's signature role (He also appeared as Grave Robber in the 10-minute short film). Paris Hilton does a great job on this song. Her voice sounds seductive yet taunting in a way. I'm actually very impressed with what I've seen of Paris so far for this film. After what a mess I've seen of he lately, drinking, getting into car accidents and going to jail she really cleaned up and does a great job here. Her singing has also definitely improved since SOME projects (*cough* Stars Are Blind *cough*). My only problem with this song is that some parts are really hard to hear and I have to agree with Shilo (Alexa Vega) when she says "What?".
4. Night Surgeon
Anthony Stewart Head = Wow. His singing is really good here. The way he kind of speeds up while talking to his dead wife at the beginning reminds me of when The Beadle from Sweeney Todd (Portrayed by Timothy Spall in the movie adaption) talks/sings quickly about Judge Turpin's lack of appearance to avoid getting himself killed by the Judge's wrath. Anyway, of all 7, debatably 6 songs on this sampler, this song stays the most true to the stage adaption. The only changes I can tell are that it's changed from a song sung by Nathan alone to a song shared by Nathan and the men of the Largo family. Also some additional lines have been added. Just like with "At The Opera Tonight", I really like the drums in this song. They provide a solid foundation for the vocals. Although between this song and "Legal Assassin", the other big song Nathan sings, I would have preferred the latter but this is still a really good song. Besides, you can hear a small snippet of Legal Assassin in the new trailer.
5. Chase The Morning
This song shocks me. A lot. Anyone who is familiar with the stage adaption knows that Chase The Morning originally was a beautiful piano duet between Shilo and Bling Mag. This song is drastically different. The two share little in common except for the title. That isn't necessarily a bad thing though. This song incorporates a little bit of another Blind Mag song called "Chromaggia's Lament" at the beginning. It even appears to sample the original Chase The Morning at one point. I really only have two real problems with this song. The first is just a normal complaint. Just like with Zydrate Anatomy it's hard to hear what they are saying at points. This leads into my next complaint. They are mainly talking as opposed to singing in this song. Although this sounds really cool at parts, I can't help but imagine it as just a conversation with music. Also, the talking doesn't really give the wonderful and talented Sarah Brightman (Blind Mag) a chance to show off her amazing voice. I'm sure she'll have a chance to later though. Overall, this is a pretty good song that sets up the plot for the rest of the film, but I'm still hoping the original Chase The Morning will work it's way into the film somehow.
Ok, I'm tired now. I'll review the last two songs later.
