It looks as if New Line Cinema and Platinum Dunes have taken the next step in resurrecting the infamous boogeyman, Freddy Krueger, as they've officialy begun working on a script for their remake/prequel of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Read on to see who will be writing the film, which will mark the ninth time Freddy will grace the big screen.

New Line has taken a step forward in bringing Freddy back to the big screen.

The Warner Bros. division has hired veteran scribe Wesley Strick (Cape Fear, Doom) to pen the relaunch of the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" series, the franchise that helped establish New Line into a movie player in the mid-1980s.

The original "Nightmare" was written and directed by Wes Craven and released in 1984. It created one of the most popular villains in screen history, Freddy Krueger, played by Robert Englund, and its runaway success spawned a slew of sequels.

The films' premise centered on Krueger, a serial child killer murdered who returns with a burned face and razor glove to terrorize teens in their dreams.

No Shannon and Swift? Awesome! With Strick it's a "Yay!" for Cape Fear and Arachnophobia BUT a huge "BOOOO!" for Doom. I'm not sure how much better he'll be....but can't wait for more news!

No Robert, no movie. Robert can say its ok and time to move on, but he is being paid to, and no one can play him. So unless he can do it, and they are keen for him to do it, fine. If not, can the project.

Since everything after part 2 was complete garbage, I don't mind Robert not being involved. Hang me for saying it, but there's nowhere left to go with the original run of the series anymore, so if another one comes out, then good.. let it start off fresh with new faces. And if it sucks.. so what, we still have the originals. No big loss. I just hope they decide to spend at least the beginning of the film with him before the fire.

AWESOME! Can't wait to see this! I agree there will never be as good of a Freddy as Robert BUT things do change and nothing we can do about it so bring on the remake! However I already thought it was written and its just now getting written!? WOW! Anyway can't wait for it!

Has everyone lost their damn minds? Platinum Dunes produces nothing but CRAP!!! Not to mention they have no original ideas and are killing all the old classics with shitty remakes. If there is no Robert there is no Freddy period! He isn't like Micheal Meyers or Jason you can't just toss some tall guy behind a mask to kill folks. Why can't they just let the series lie as it was? It doesn't need a remake. If all the kiddies want to see Freddy rent the DVDS. Besides new line is now owned by Warner brothers and Rob Shaye is out so it will just be a toss it through the mill mash up without any love or care gone into it by a bunch of morons only hoping to capitalize on the franchise. I hope these remake happy fools die in their sleep chocking on the crap they produce!

I own the box set and I still want them to re-make this movie. It would be fine with a new freddy too, gives us something to talk about. I said Heath Ledger was going to be a shitty Joker when they first castest him....and so did you don't fucking lie....and look what he did. PD's remakes aren't bad either. TCM was more wacthable than it's original, sorry it's true. Amittyville is waaaaaaay better. The hitcher...not so much...but at least they showed the truck scene. Friday the 13th is looking good. Bring it on, I'd rather see a re-make of NOES than movie like Midnight Meat Train. What's next with the shitty horror names these days anyway, Savage Sausage Fest?

If this movie does not have robert this will be just another crappy remake.

what the fuck? no wes craven? all i know is they need to rethink the directing choice, and as far as Freddy goes, LONG LIVE ROBERT ENGLUND! in other words, i want the original director, and star.

I wouldn't want to see it without Robert either. Even though there might be an extremely slim chance that they might find someone as good to play Freddy, the new Joker was awesome for example,i don't have much faith in them going through so much trouble to perfect the role. I hope they do though cause i LOVE Freddy

the success of this movie hinges on the first pic we get to see of the new Freddy. Remember what happened with Catwoman? As soon as we saw Halle in that rediculous costume the movie was doomed. The same thing could happen here. KM

boring ............. what a crock of shit, the entire series was and is and always will be stupid

I hope that this can be good. And I grew up watching Robert. So I could never imagine replacing him. But if they really have to, may I suggest Christopher Meloni from SVU? He proved he can be dark and creepy on OZ and shares a similar look to Robert. If they have to go younger. Then go with an unlikely choice like Eric Dane.

Also, Leighton Meester for Nancy Thompson. She has that classic horror film girl look to her and can act. Don't care about the whole CW actor stigma that people have. Some of those kids are good actors stuck on crappy shows. And she's one of them.

If Robert doesn't play Freddy then I won't be seeing this movie.

Yeah, it is hard to imagine anyone but Robert Englund portraying Freddie Krueger. I mean he is Freddie, but if theis is a series relaunch then replacing him is fine. Because everything will been re-booted with a clean slate. But if it's a prequel to the existing series, then you have to have Robert.
