New Line Begins Work On New 'Elm Street'
Wednesday, July 23, 2008

It looks as if New Line Cinema and Platinum Dunes have taken the next step in resurrecting the infamous boogeyman, Freddy Krueger, as they've officialy begun working on a script for their remake/prequel of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Read on to see who will be writing the film, which will mark the ninth time Freddy will grace the big screen.

New Line has taken a step forward in bringing Freddy back to the big screen.

The Warner Bros. division has hired veteran scribe Wesley Strick (Cape Fear, Doom) to pen the relaunch of the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" series, the franchise that helped establish New Line into a movie player in the mid-1980s.

The original "Nightmare" was written and directed by Wes Craven and released in 1984. It created one of the most popular villains in screen history, Freddy Krueger, played by Robert Englund, and its runaway success spawned a slew of sequels.

The films' premise centered on Krueger, a serial child killer murdered who returns with a burned face and razor glove to terrorize teens in their dreams.

No Robert, no movie. Robert can say its ok and time to move on, but he is being paid to, and no one can play him. So unless he can do it, and they are keen for him to do it, fine. If not, can the project.

Since everything after part 2 was complete garbage, I don't mind Robert not being involved. Hang me for saying it, but there's nowhere left to go with the original run of the series anymore, so if another one comes out, then good.. let it start off fresh with new faces. And if it sucks.. so what, we still have the originals. No big loss. I just hope they decide to spend at least the beginning of the film with him before the fire.

Has everyone lost their damn minds? Platinum Dunes produces nothing but CRAP!!! Not to mention they have no original ideas and are killing all the old classics with shitty remakes. If there is no Robert there is no Freddy period! He isn't like Micheal Meyers or Jason you can't just toss some tall guy behind a mask to kill folks. Why can't they just let the series lie as it was? It doesn't need a remake. If all the kiddies want to see Freddy rent the DVDS. Besides new line is now owned by Warner brothers and Rob Shaye is out so it will just be a toss it through the mill mash up without any love or care gone into it by a bunch of morons only hoping to capitalize on the franchise. I hope these remake happy fools die in their sleep chocking on the crap they produce!

I own the box set and I still want them to re-make this movie. It would be fine with a new freddy too, gives us something to talk about. I said Heath Ledger was going to be a shitty Joker when they first castest him....and so did you don't fucking lie....and look what he did. PD's remakes aren't bad either. TCM was more wacthable than it's original, sorry it's true. Amittyville is waaaaaaay better. The hitcher...not so much...but at least they showed the truck scene. Friday the 13th is looking good. Bring it on, I'd rather see a re-make of NOES than movie like Midnight Meat Train. What's next with the shitty horror names these days anyway, Savage Sausage Fest?

the success of this movie hinges on the first pic we get to see of the new Freddy. Remember what happened with Catwoman? As soon as we saw Halle in that rediculous costume the movie was doomed. The same thing could happen here. KM

I hope that this can be good. And I grew up watching Robert. So I could never imagine replacing him. But if they really have to, may I suggest Christopher Meloni from SVU? He proved he can be dark and creepy on OZ and shares a similar look to Robert. If they have to go younger. Then go with an unlikely choice like Eric Dane.

Yeah, it is hard to imagine anyone but Robert Englund portraying Freddie Krueger. I mean he is Freddie, but if theis is a series relaunch then replacing him is fine. Because everything will been re-booted with a clean slate. But if it's a prequel to the existing series, then you have to have Robert.

On the writing person though good choice I cannot fault it, Cape Fear was great and Doom wasnt too bad either as far as game to movie things go, at least hes no Paul Anderson. If terrible could-be porn actress Tara Reid is going to be in it she should be a victim and have a no speaking role as she sucked in Urban Legend maybe she should stop sucking for roles and start sucking for cash in the porn industry! However, this is gonna be 2009 when it goes into prod., and its the truth but ENGLUND just ISN'T scary/intimidating anymore! With this remake, they need to go back to making him f*ckin' SCARY again! Not a wise crackin' comedian. Sorry folks, but IT IS POSSIBLE to find a daring actor out there who can bring creepiness back into the role.

I am so sick of people ruining great horror classics. It started with Dracula(Coppola's version not counted), Frankenstien, and The Mummy. Now it's greats like TCM, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Is nothing sacred. I don't care how good Jason looks, or the fact that Freddy is back. It's not the same, and they won't be nearly as good. Also, only Robert Endlund can play Freddy. It's not like you don't see his face, or hear his voice. Come on people, wake up, and smell the crap!

Respect to the original interpretation but its time to move on. I agree with Zombie Hell. There is a high probability this film will suck so might as well re-cast Freddy and try a new actor with a different (hopefully darker) take. If they insist on re-making the classics like Elm Street, they might as well go the whole way. If it flops, no one cares and it won't affect the original, Robert Englund, or Wes Craven. P.S. I pity disanti. Perhaps you wanna sit around watching frame-for-frame remakes over and over but I think most people want something Original (regardless of the title).

Complaining about remakes is useless. The classics will continue to be remade for a new generation that were not alive when alot of these were made. They make tons of money, so just get used to it and talk about the movie. I agree that Freddy had become a parody. A stand up comedian in a horror costume that lost his edge LONG ago. Just like Jason, I think both characters can come back and be scarier than ever. Robert Englund was great for his time and did a great job bringing Freddy to the screen, but c'mon people, he's too old to reprise his role today. If it's being remade, start over with everything, including the cast from over 20 years ago. Makes no sense !!!

What?!? That's dumb. Englund was just Freddy a couple of years ago, and did a great job. He is Freddy, just like Bruce Campbell is Ash. Another take on it would be interesting, but The werent replaced over the years for a reason. People love the characters the way they are, and nobody else will/can do them justice.

There's something to be said for quitting while you are ahead and leaving before your legacy becomes tainted (which arguably it already has for Englund). They never changed him as an actor because it was a quick and easy way to guarantee an income on the next Freddy film without taking too many risks. Freddy vs Jason was an exception. But you can't compare it to Ash's films. Would be more appropriate to compare with the Friday the 13th and Halloween series, where the actor was changed often and even though the faces were usually hidden, the physical appearances and movements were different enough to notice. I believe the Michael from Zombie's Halloween is the most threatening yet even though the film itself was a pile of steaming beetle excrement.

I agree with everyone who thinks a fresh face should play freddy. I also want to say HALLOWEEN would have been so much better if it was by Platinum Dunes. I really think they should do another remake of Halloween, and totally disregard RZs!!! Aslo, in a remake/prequel(whatever the hell they make these days) you can't go in expecting the same movie. Remake doesn't mean Re run, but made over. Plus don't compare these to originals.

This movie should not be a remake. It should not be a sequel. The only way that this movie could work is if they completely rework what a Friday the 13th movie is. It shouldn't just be a group of random teens getting terrorized by Freddy. This movie should be about Freddy, but viewed as an epidemic. It should show the impact that he has on the whole town. Freddy is like a plague to the town, he is a disease. I think it could work if they viewed the events on a wider spectrum and don't just go for the average horror movie cliche addled story line. Just my two cents. If they need a writer I already have a script.

Also, Why does everybody always talk crap about RZs Halloween whenever a horror remake is brought up? It wasn't that bad. At least he tried something new (also, the original cut was soooooo much better) something that can't be said for most horror movie remakes. We should stop scorning RZ for going out on a limb and trying something different. Sure it didn't work for everybody, but if we scorn him then we are just telling the studios that we don't want different, we just want more of the same. I for one want something different.

There has to be a prequel, the writers never explained why freddy was burned, they just said he killed one girl and they burned him, but whats up with the glove and the way he is? Did anyone pay attention? Robert Englund is 54 now he is way to old to be hitting the glove again. With all the new arising young stars coming, The producers have many talents to choose from so dont get to negative Freddy rules yes but not as good as Jason, He will return and I have a good intention it may be better then the original, back in 84 they had certian stipulations to follow by in a horror movie now a days, its all about blood and guts and gore so It may be alot better. just have Patience.

Stop with these remade horror movies!!! Friday the 13th is one thing. You can't just stick any ole guy in as Freddy. Robert Englund is the one and only. Why can't Hollywood come up with new ideas. TCM, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Prom Night, Hellraiser, they've all been remade or are gonna be remade. I'm all for movies like the Day the Earth Stood Still being remade. It was black and white. THey can do so much more with movies like that nowdays. There's no way NOES remake can top the original. No one will be able to watch it w/o going psssh and shaking their head. What I ultimately hate about all the remakes is if you go to a video store, you can't find the original movie anymore. It's always the new version. Do an experiment yourself: go to a Circuit City, FYE, or Best Buy. Look to see how many original Texas Chainsaw Massacres you find. It's like the original vanished off the face of the planet.

Whether it's Freddy, Jason, Michael or whatever, it's not a problem of who's playing the character that makes him scary or not because we've come to know them too well. It's a matter of how the characters are presented and story being told. That's why I say unlike Jason or Michael as guys simply in a mask, Freddy is different like Hannibal Lector. Who the fuck enjoyed the latest and last Hannibal film eh?
