Michael Bay Talks 'Friday the 13th' Twist!
Tuesday, July 15, 2008

We've heard all about the upcoming Friday the 13th over the past few months, and while there has been plenty revealed, there is still one man who hasn't spoken up. This afternoon Entertainment Weekly spoke to Platinum Dunes producer (and big action director) Michael Bay about the forthcoming return of Jason Voorhees divulging some interesting news about a possible "twist"?! Read on for the skinny.

While talking to Entertainment Weekly, Bay talked a bit about the new plot for the remake, which arrives in theaters February 13, 2009.

"It’s a reconception of the original. We’re introducing a whole group of new kids. What we always try to do is add a little bit of freshness to these movies that were really scary back then and update them for a new audience."

Bay continues, "I haven’t seen the director's cut because he’s still cutting, but I know this one will really be scary; it’s also funny, as well. It’s a fun college adventure that goes awry. It’s not a movie I would ever show my mom! (Laughs) We don’t make these for our mothers; we make these for the fans out there."

He also took the chance to respond directly to the haters of the remake, which are all over the place...

"There are always haters out there, and you can’t get rid of that" he explains. "We try to be faithful, and we’re fans ourselves. It’s like when I did Transformers — I listened to the fans, you know, but you still have to make your own movie by respecting what was done and trying to give it a whole new twist."

A whole new twist? You might want to get that SPOILER hard hat on before you read the next sentance...

"You’re just not going to believe the first 12 minutes! It’s a twist in itself..."

Watch for more as it comes in. The first image of Jason is rumored to appear as early as this week!

Sounds good, hope to see Jason's new look this upcomming week. Really looking forward to this. I dont get the spoiler though, just that the first 12 min of the movie is gonna be a big twist. The twist can be anything? so many different angles can happen to begin the movie.

I don't see this as a twist really. The first 12 minutes can hardly be a twist since there's been no groundwork yet layed by the movie to twist. And I took the highlighted yellow bit as more for transformers although I'm not sure just how "twisty" transformers was. I thought it was a pretty straight forward unimaginative movie about space robots.

LOL what the hell is the twist goin to be jason transforms LOL or maybe freddy comes up.

8:04pm, July 15, 2008

i hope the twist is it's the resurrected killer from part V a new beginning doing the killings again and not jason....NOT!

I cant wait. finally it seems like a jason movie with a more in depth story.

Anyone else worried about the "funny" comment? I suppose a little funny is alright, but I definitely don't want Jason himself involved in any of it...

8:44pm, July 15, 2008

I wonder if the twist will be that Jason's mother is actually the one that kills him and he comes back for revenge. The counselors just get in the way as he is looking for revenge.

8:47pm, July 15, 2008

Remember when you laughed at Jason slamming that girl up again a tree in part 7. Or when you chuckled in part 4 when that kid for the speargun in the nuts....I think that's what he's talking about. Some lame humor from the kids is expected, but I don't see Jason putting pies into anyone face if that's what you're worried about.

8:59pm, July 15, 2008

I can't!!!!!! As a fan, leave these alone! You have ruined too many movies already. I'm sorry but TCM and AH were 2 horrible remakes, not to mention Halloween, which is the only reason THIS movie is happening. I'll wait for netflix. + isn't Michael Bay on the bored for the MPAA? He likes and goes for pg-13, he is onkly doing this for the money, he could care less about the fans

korollocke
9:21pm, July 15, 2008

the twist will be jason is really a girl tweenager and there will be no gore and goofy romance.

korollocke
9:22pm, July 15, 2008

pg-13 shouldn't be a surprise, michael bay is involved and 13 is in the title, that will be his excuse.

Evil_Flip
9:24pm, July 15, 2008

the twist will probably be that Jason will be completely CGI :( the only remake I want so see him do is something like Saw or Hostel with just him being tortured for about 2 hours and with the twist ending where we happily realise it was a snuff movie and Bay is really dead; unable to make more crappy films so that the money can be spent on interesting things.

Fridaythe13th
9:29pm, July 15, 2008

Even though they have officially stated that it will be rated R, complete with partying, sex, and nudity? The PG-13 argument has no backing here anymore.

9:32pm, July 15, 2008

Can we please have a simple horror movie with no twists? My god

bombthreat
9:52pm, July 15, 2008

it makes me sick that they keep throwing around the word funny. I was hoping they would take a serious approach like they did with TCM remake.

It's rated R...that's all ready been stated by Platinum Dunes. Quit bitching.

10:54pm, July 15, 2008

Shit..now I found a way to get more excited. If it wasn't for The Dark Knight coming out this week, I think this movie could be the most anticipated on my list this year. Welcome back Jason...

replica088
10:58pm, July 15, 2008

This is going to be a terrible movie. Why is Marcus Nispel directing??? All this tells me is that Michael Bay, is just looking to make the movie on the cheap, not really care if the film is good or not and just hope that based on the franchise name, he can cash in. Just like he did with TCSM, Amiltyville Horror, and The Hitcher. Just hoping to $cash$ in on the name. Thess types of movies should not look like episodes of "One Tree Hill"

magnaderalpha
11:10pm, July 15, 2008

You know what would be a CRAZY twist? Jared's character is killed off and the lone survivor would be the Asian guy! That would be CRAZY! And Disanti, as humor is concerned, Swift and Shannon write HORRIBLE comedy(ever hear the jokes in Freddy Vs Jason?). Did you read the snippet the Fueller was hailing as funny? The thing about "pressing the button on the whupass machine"? That's TERRIBLE! If you want real humor, hire writers who actually have experience working on comedy movies. If not, just try to stick with horror and try not to make us cringe with comedy that's not funny.

djblack1313
11:18pm, July 15, 2008

magnaderalpha, i agree w/ you. that IS some terrible (dare i say) "comedic writing"! LOL. i hope Bay is totally off target when referring to the "funny" in the movie. make it fucking scary or don't make it at all. very few director/writers can make a good horror/comedy like the awesome "Shaun of the Dead".

ultrazilla2000
11:43pm, July 15, 2008

If Bay was to make this movie completely serious, with ZERO cheese at all, then it just wouldn't be a Friday the 13th movie, and then everybody would bitch because it wasn't faithful to the series. So he IS admitting there will be some "fun" in the movie, and people still bitch because for some reason they forget what Friday the 13th movies are really like. I've come to the conclusion that most genre fans are just a bunch of bitches! I think the movie will be a blast and I'm ready and waiting.

u guys rember in part 4 where the dad from back to the futrue was danceing look a fool and he got a corkscrew in the and a meatclver to the face and he was said he was a dead fu.l;d

WENN
12:15am, July 16, 2008

i think the beginning twist is going to be the whole scenario from pt.1....jason's mother goes batshit, kills a bunch of campers and is killed herself in the first 12 mins....the rest of the movie is jason getting revenge with flashbacks to how/when he died and her descent into madness...

BloodFlow
12:17am, July 16, 2008

Can't wait

djblack1313

MY guess: Jason doesnt drown, his mother just thinks he does. That way at least it makes some goddamn sense. I love Friday the 13th movies. I got em all. They are my fav slasher series by far. Im just saying that you gotta have some serious imagination to accept the storylines that connect the movies lol. Good thing I dont care about that shit with Friday the 13th for some reason.

lil bit of freshness for a new audience?!?! and lil bit of comedy?!?!?! welp that did it for me thanks for ruining my favorite series of all time michael bay and Platinum Dunes .......i was all pumped and ready to see this until i came across this today..... oh ya ok the first 12 minutes are going to be a twist?!?! ya ok.......i agree with you horrorjunky . no horror director today cares about us fans they are just in it for show me the money! and ill do whatever i want who cares about the fans who have grown up with this classic series. i swear if it is rated pg13 for the stupid 13-16 then i aint seeing it. i dont feel like sitting through a bunch of teenagers talking and screaming etc threw this. id rather wait for it on dvd/netflix bc i aint waisting my 9.50(which is rediculous i remember when movies used to be 3.50) to go and see a pos remake then. this should have never been remade......might as well call it a horror-comedy! only horror remake that i coudl tollerate was the tcm remake and that was all. so much for early wedding gift to myself.

8:42am, July 16, 2008

i think jason turning out to be a girl is an awsome idea lol i mean theres not a whole lot of girl slashers out there and i think we need to be represented more :) heather! PS: i came here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and i'm all out of bubble gum! :)

@ Cronos2 Yeah, I read the same thing: http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/07/15/transformers-2- opens-with-a-big-twist-more-sci-fi-than-the-first-film/#com ments

I completely understand the fans in a way because I am one, since I'm a young kid I watch those movies and why be against another one? I mean lets be honest, there's no way they can screw us more than Jason X or Jason goes to hell. I believe the remake is going to honor the franchise and not ruin it. After all who doesn't wanna take a new look at Jason ? Come on, give it a chance!

12:48pm, July 16, 2008

Is it possible that pic is the new Jason? I don't recognize it from previous movies. I'm worried abut this "twist". I'd say it has something to do with his mother and their relationship. Like an incestuous relationship. I can't come up with much of anything other than that

the birkhill slasher
1:15pm, July 16, 2008

My guess is that the twist involves Freddy.Maybe he's Jasons father.

i really dislike Michael Bay. If he's comparing this to Transformers I'm fuckin scared.

format916
5:07pm, July 16, 2008

Dont forget everyone, Movie making is a business. Why did they pump out 11 jason sequels? Becuase it makes money. The TCM Remake, although i didn't care for, did take a serious approach to it. Im hoping this one will too. Now if they made it short, sweet, to the point and depressing like TCM:The Begining, well, ill have a whole new thought on Michael Bay.

JasVoor13
5:09pm, July 16, 2008

Actually when he talks of twists he is referring to F13 and not Transformers 2 read the Entertainment Weekly interview. It better not turn out Jason was a girl. I'd personally burn the writers houses down.

JasVoor13
5:42pm, July 16, 2008

I read somewhere that there will be an actual switch scene from a sack to the mask. A reporter on set referred to it as a "Darth Vader" moment. I also read some of the supposed script before they started shooting. It said it will be revealed how Jason always seems to appear from out of nowhere. He has secret tunnels underground that he pops up from. That could be the twist?

djblack1313
6:01pm, July 16, 2008

the tunnels thing could be cool, DEPENDING on HOW it's done. it reminds me of "Behind The Mast".

format916
6:18pm, July 16, 2008

Tunnels are stupid STUPID!!! I mean that is actually EXPLAINING the cheese factor. I mean why do people love/hate serial killer movies? Because the killer walks while the victim runs, pops up out of nowhere and kills them. Thats what the fun is all about. Now there going to elaborate literally for the audience.

girlscoutstalker
6:42pm, July 16, 2008

I really don't think he meant twist as to some big moment, I took it as a fresh twist on things. As for the funny stuff. Bay said it involvs a bunch of college kids and if you watch the first hour of the first one, its mostly a bunch of camp counselors hanging out and being funny. Thats what I think that means.

pppshawn
7:00pm, July 16, 2008

Man, I don't know what upsets me the most! The fact that well over half of the people commenting on this subject are hating this before they even see the flick, or the fact that I actually sat there and read all of them!!! At least wait and bitch about it after the movie is out and you have a chance to see it. Quit relying on 'internet rumors or insider reports'. Who cares if it is funny, or even if Jason is involved in some of the humor? Those are some of the best parts in this series. One of my favorite moments is when Jason is trying to get those holographic girls from "Jason X" (plus who doesn't love a Cronenberg cameo). And personally, I think Michael Bay has done a pretty damn good job producing the recent remakes. I'm a fan and as long as I enjoyed myself during the movie, thats all I care about. I'm not going to hate it just because it doesn't stay faithful be an exact copy of the original. I for one can't wait for this to come out! And yes I know the irony of bitching about people bitching . . . Shawn @ Plastic People Productions

magnaderalpha
7:22pm, July 16, 2008

ultrazilla2000, from what I recall, the first Friday the 13th movie was pretty dry with comedy. And might I add, any and all humor in that movie seemed less forced, more natural. Natural means it rolls out easy. Forced is like that bit Shannon and Swift wrote, where one-liners are written for the sake of being "quotable". Very good one-liners are written without the intention of being quotable, but they become quotable. A lot of modern horror movies try hard to churn out quotes by adding horrible comedic lines. Just like that line by Mark in FvJ, "Coffee, make friends with it!". It's just....STUPID!!

djblack1313
9:31pm, July 16, 2008

format916, i assume that's why YOU like slasher films ("Because the killer walks while the victim runs, pops up out of nowhere and kills them."). i respect that if you do. personally i've always HATED that aspect. how can Jason (for example) be everywhere at everytime. that's the STUPID thing (IMO).

tszilla
9:41pm, July 16, 2008

Lighten up people! Twenty five to thirty years ago people were crying because someone had the nerve to remake Invasion Of The Body Snatchers and Cat People and The Thing. We got inventive, envelope pushing groundbreaking movies with great performances and great effects that still hold up today. How many of the original F13 films can say that? They were good stupid fun, not much more. If you don't like the reimagining you'll always have the originals. Give the Platinum Dunes guys a chance and I bet we'll be loving ths movie next winter.

JasVoor13
1:08am, July 17, 2008

I don't think too many people want it to be like the original. If it was, there'd be no reason to see it. Jason was just a kid corpse pulling the girl underwater in that one. I don't mind having some things changed about Jason lore. I just don't want it to be anything outrageous. I was the exception when it came to Rob Zombie's Halloween. While it was nowhere near as great as the original, I liked it. I hated the first few minutes of it where they were showing the family. There's not a family in the world that dysfunctional and trashy. Jerry Springer wouldn't allow that family on his show. So if they change a few things about Jason, that's fine. I just don't want it to be something outrageous and stupid just to shock the fans.

JasVoor13
2:01am, July 17, 2008

I know what Jason is going to look like. I went to wikipedia and they have a section called "Creating Jason" they detail what Derek Mears had to wear. He will in fact have a hump and Derek was given fake fingernails to wear, but he decided to grow out his own. Derek describes Jason as like Rambo because he gets them trapped. So that could be the new twist on Jason. So this movie should be renamed Friday the 13th: Hunchback of Camp Crystal Lake. After a kill does he climb up and ring a bell?

neildiamondfan
2:58am, July 17, 2008

um, why bother pushing this story with " read for the twist " - when it's not even said what it is ? false advertising it's called ............

neildiamondfan
3:07am, July 17, 2008

and the so called twist - which doesn't exist in this article even though it says is does ................. is about Jason's father.

Ace4759
4:48pm, July 17, 2008

If you've read that Derek Mears interview somewhere on the net, or some of info on Wikipedia, I'm absolutely loving the take on Jason, for this movie. It sounds like Rambo from First Blood, meets the Jason from Part 2. Like he's a crazed, wild animal killing/setting traps for anyone who goes near his turf.

JasVoor13
7:46pm, July 17, 2008

Who wants to see Jason setting traps?? He is a sadistic brutal killer, not a guy who sets traps. If I want to watch Rambo, I'll stick a dvd of Rambo in. Give me the Jason who kills you by sticking hot coals through your gut, or kills you with a party favor. The whole reason people will go to see this movie is to see their favorite slasher in the woods Jason Voorhees slaughtering teens as only he knows how, not watching him set ankle traps and tying up people and throwing them over his shoulder. I read that they want to make Jason a "sympathetic figure". I don't want to feel sorry for him. I want to feel sorry for the poor little teens that he's gonna carve up. Maybe the ending is he gets counseled by Dr.Phil. Leave it to Michael Bay to soften up Jason Voorhees. I bet you won't even see the actual murders take place. Like i TCM. You'd see Leatherface get the chainsaw in position, then they'd show the guy getting killed w/Leatherface's back to you so that there was no blood. The only gore in that movie was when the woman shot herself in the head in the van.

Umbilical Noose
4:49am, July 18, 2008

Jason set all kinds of traps in the origninal F13 nnivues, like someone would get pulled up into the air by a rop around their ankle and then Jason would slit their throat. i hate it that they are over emphasizing the fact that they are putting so much DRUG USE and SEXXX in this movie. i mean there's no harm in putting it in and the other movie had all kinds of it in there but they just happened to have sex and drugs... they didnt find it a rule to add those things into the movie... when you force it in there it is so apperant that it waas forced and its kind of annoying. anyway, im pretty excited for this because unlike some people i enjoyed the TCM and Halloween remakes... so this one should be pretty good..

Quint's Machete
1:38pm, July 24, 2008

I hope they don't explain away everything & make Mr.Voorhees a sympathetic character. I like leaving a little mystery for the imagination to play with. His motivation is clear. He's avenging his mother's death. In the "part 2" novel, it explains how Jason watched from the woods while Alice decapitated his mother. After she's gone in the canoe, he comes out of hiding & picks up his mother's head & becomes enraged. Movies work best when they use a broad brush & paint a simple picture. Then, let the audience sorta' fill in the gaps with their imagination. To explain every little detail leaves no room for thought. If you let the audience participate with a film, they can interpret it in a way that frightens or interests them on an individual basis. Therefore, they have a satisfying cinematic experience, because they've tapped into their own personal fears or desires while watching the film. That's what makes a movie for me!!!! "Look upon this omen & go back from once ye' came, I have warned thee"----Friday the 13th part 3.
