Last night SpookyDan took a trip to the Universal Hilton Hotel in Universal City, CA to cover the red carpet event for the 34th Annual Saturn Awards. Inside you'll find a little blurb from Guillermo del Toro updating his project HATERS, along with loads of pictures from the red carpet. Watch for our video pieces on BDTV in the coming weeks.

Last night Universal Hilton was the place to be to see all sorts of genre favorites and a bunch of up comers whose names you may not yet know, but you will in the near future. It’s The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror's 34th annual Saturn Awards!

Guillermo Del Toro was at the event to accept his George Pal Memorial Award, for his body of work – HELBOY II comes out in a couple of weeks - and we will have an exclusive video interview for you BD readers online next week.

With so many upcoming films, it is becoming hard to keep track of what Guillermo del Toro is attached to. Some he is producing, some directing, but on the short list of projects he is involved with are THE HOBBIT, AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, HATER and SPLICE. We had a moment to speak to him about the stages of some of these projects, which you can watch when it appears on BDTV. “HATER is still in pre-production and is in script stage,” he tells SpookyDan. “I cannot wait… it’s such a great story!” HATER is about an epidemic of random violence in which ordinary people strike lethally without warning or remorse.

The Saturn Award show is a fun event, but like the MTV Movie awards, they certainly feel like the whole thing is pre-planned, and the friends of the Academy usually win. Oddly though, this year they decided to go outside of the genres that they are celebrating to hand out awards to films like NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and nominate BLACK BOOK and THERE WILL BE BLOOD, none of which fall under the sci-fi fantasy, or horror banner. Maybe next year they will step back an actually nominate and award the many great genre picks that come out, and not just the blockbusters and the fashionably popular films. Does Javier Bardem need another best supporting actor trophy, or could that have gone to the William Sadler for THE MIST, or any number of others that were actually within the celebrated genres?

Anyways, here are some pics from the red carpet to wet your whistle.

Awww..Ryan and Theresa Schifrin. Such a great couple. :) Del Toro is such a sweetie. I loved his acceptance speech at the awards. Can't wait to see him tackle "The Hobbit" and "The Hobbit 2: Electric Boogaloo." (Only a working title) ;)
