We were hit with a barrage of phone calls last night and this morning informing us that special effects and make-up guru Stan Winston has passed away Sunday, June 15 in Los Angeles, CA. He was 62. Winston is best known for working on such legendary films as TERMINATOR, JURASSIC PARK, PREDATOR, THE ENTITY, THE THING, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, among many others. Winston won four Oscars in his career. The details of his passing have yet to be reported, we'll be updating you shortly. Feel free to tell us your favorite Winston moments below.
No!!!!! Oh man, this hits like a hammer to the stomach. Stan Winston, perhaps the greatest special effects artist in the history of American cinema, has left us at the tender age of 62. Oh man, I can't even describe my facade. He will be dearly missed, such a creative and brilliant man.
WOW.... Really sad news... The guy is a legend and his work had a huge impact on me. From The Thing, Aliens, Terminator, Predator, Jurassic Park all are favorites of mine. He'll certainly be missed.
RIP
This is terrible. Obviously everyone else has said what I planned on saying (he was great, Jurassic Park, The Thing, Terminator, blah, blah). This is truly sad. Just the other day I was watching one of the featurettes on my Wrong Turn DVD and thinking about how great it would be if by some miracle he came back to do Wrong Turn 3, should it come to fruition. This is really, really terrible.
Horns up. \m/. He is responsible for THE best action, sci-fi and horror effects EVER, period. Nothing has surpassed Jurassic Park in special effects in the entire 15 years since it's release. The man was a genius. This is extremely sad, he will be sorely missed in this disgusting age of poor digital effects.
Damn I met him at Fango's NJ Weekend of Horrors a year ago. I had him sign my Pumpkinhead DVD. He was really nice. He's absolutely one of if not the best in his business.
I first meet Stan Winston about 10 years ago at a Fangoria after party/halloween party in Los Angeles. I was a Student from Joe Blasco at the time and shook his hand. Funny since he was dressed in a Leather S&M outfit (with chains) with a leather village people hat (true story I swear to god). I even did a quick intern in his shop cleaning out molds for Jurassic Park. He was a nice man that loved a good practical joke. I haven't even thought about him until picked up his book a couple of weeks ago. Sad to hear about his passing.
R.I.P.
You will be dearly missed. You were loved by many, and respected by all.
we love you Stan Winston.
p.s. - The wolfman from MONSTER SQUAD was molded after him, so if anyone wants to pay some respect and homage, I would watch that film...they were phenom.
In the Film business, there are few peers Winston had in the Make Up FX biz. The word 'Legend' gets tossed around a lot lately, and not many of people are deserving of that title. I think it's fair to say that the film industry lost a Legend in Stan Winston. I am grateful that his work will live on forever through the films he made special with the work he put in to every project. Goodbye Stan, you shall be missed by many.
His work was so organic it never felt like you were watching prosthetics, latex or animatronics. And in interviews he never lost sight of the fact that he was a fan first. What a terrible loss for the FX community.
Nooooo... Who ever is 21 and over, take a shot of "something" in the honor of Mr. Winston. I did, to calm me down. Please excuse me because I'm gonna watch Stan Winstons work til I get sick... which would be never. R.I.P.
One of the only guys left in Hollywood with any Special Effects "Vision"... his death will leave a very noticeable gap in Horror & SciFi.
And 62 at that... very sad and sorry for his family.
I've worked for Stan Winston on an off over the years and he was always really kind to everyone. He always had a joke for you when you talk to him. His passing leaves a huge hole in our industry. He is missed.
Stan will truly be missed. He was a Special Effects genius!! Stan has given us all numerous creations to enjoy, and we will never forget him. May he R.I.P.
Fuck. I'm beyond shocked. Truly some of the worst news I've heard in awhile, which is saying something. I met him briefly years ago, fantastic guy...even got to take a tour of his studios when I was a teenager; something I'll never ever forget. This is truly awful news...I'm speechless; just...fuck. RIP Mr. Winston - you will be sorely missed.
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTT????? NOOO!!!!
