'The Evil Dead' Remake Not Dead Yet
Friday, June 6, 2008

Back in October of 2004 New Line Cinema was on the verge of signing a contract that would have pit Freddy Krueger against Jason Voorhees and Ash in a highly anticipated sequel to FREDDY VS JASON. The weekend of the 24th passed and the Sam Raimi produced remake of THE GRUDGE hit theaters taking the number one spot at the box office taking in a monster $40 million opening weekend. That following Sunday Raimi announced that he would be remaking The Evil Dead killing any and all hope of seeing the trio take battle. Here we are four years later and instead of witnessing a legendary fight, we have nothing. We chatted with Raimi earlier this evening where he updated us on the progress of the long-delayed remake to the franchise he created back in 1981. Read on for the skinny.

Sam Raimi spoke to Bloody-Disgusting today and we were able to get updates on a few projects including the long-gestating Evil Dead remake/Part 4 rumors.

When Rob Tapert, myself and Mandate formed Ghost House Pictures, one of the things we said was, ‘Well, where are we gonna get new material from?’ and we thought we could have someone remake Evil Dead as one of our horror films because we thought that was only shot in 16 mm and I don’t think that many people ever saw it on the big screen actually. They usually just found it later on video...

He continues, “The sound job should have been stereo because that movie is only as good as sight and sound and if you could have a director tell it in 35 mm and be able to move the sound around, that would increase its effectiveness three-fold. We just thought that’s actually an experience worth remaking because we’re a horror company. But then we never actually pursued it. We said we were gonna do it and then we got so busy with other projects we never actually pursued it.

We still want to do it," Raimi tells Bloody-Disgusting. "We still think it’s worth trying and I’ve still not done a single thing about it.

Although Raimi hasn’t been working on Evil Dead material since 1992’s Army of Darkness, he still seems to recall those three movies fondly. Hopefully he’ll find the time between projects one of these days to get it off the ground once more. Let’s just hope it’s while Bruce Campbell’s still vertical because personally, I can’t imagine anyone else filling those shoes (or chin). And heck, he’s almost 16 years younger than Harrison Ford anyway...

Evil Dead 4 sounds great but a remake is ridiculous even if Sam was to do it. Wasn't part 2 virtually a remake itself? But since so many movies are being remade and successful, I guess they're going to make the gay choice.

ive never seen none of the evil deads, but i do like sam rami (spidey movies and the grudge remake). but id rather see a part four than some stupid remake. why dont they look at the strangers movie to see how well it did at the box office last week. that isnt a remake it is something ORIGINAL!!! its bad enough that friday the 13th and nees is being remade and we all no how terrible the halloween remake was. blah on remakes.

He talks as though a remake would be a similar experience to the original. We ALL know what a remake would be like. The original Evil Dead is not it.

There already was a remake of Evil Dead, it was Evil Dead 2 (the same premise, the same star and a bigger budget). There's no need for yet another remake. If there was something I figured out from Spider-man 3, its that Raimi has lost touch with what the fans of his movies actually want. Even keeping in mind he was made to include a villain that he wanted no part of, there was no need to give us Emo-Peter Parker in place of actual effective drama. The idea of him still wanting an Evil Dead remake, despite none of the fans being behind it, shows just how out of touch he is with his fanbase. Just give us Evil Dead 4 instead. Its what we really want.

There are some remakes that will never live up to their original versions. This is one of them. Evil Dead is a unique horror movie experience and a remake would only cheapen it. Raimi should pay attention to his fans, not box office numbers.

If Bruce isn't in it, then it's not a remake, it's just going to be a crappy movie with the same title. Without Bruce, there is no way in hell I'm going to see this. I'd just sit in the theater staring at the screen being pissed off for an hour and a half, then soon as the end credits rolled, the first thing out of my mouth would be "that sucked compared to the original"

A remake would suck. The original is genius because of what it is, a very low budget horror film that defied all the rules and became a huge success. A remake would never capture that spirit. Plus it seems that Sam is just too busy reading Spider-Man comics to get any work done. By the time they get around to doing this Bruce will be in a nursing home just like The King in Bubba-hotep.

This is one movie that I really am nervous about remaking, even more so than "Halloween". The beauty of it was Bruce Campbell's performance (ED #2 as well), and the amazing camera angles and high speed stuff Sam was doing. There was just nothing like it. Horror and humor usually don't go together, but in ED 2 it was done so well, maybe the best example EVER. The low budget of the first film did not stop them from delivering a great horror film to watch. I watch both films atleast 1,2 times a year. And though I've seen them probably a hundred times over the years, I still love it and is right up there in the best Horror movie(s) of all time. HORRORCHICK ?? I'm assuming your young. You MUST see EVIL DEAD 1 & 2 before you can truly appreciate horror movies. Blockbuster, Netflix, GO NOW!!!!!!!!

I have to agree with most that ED remake would not be as good of idea as ED 4. Do something new, continue the ED storyline....i also agree that is HAS to be done with Bruce Campbell......cant see anyone else playing it. If you can get Bruce, move on with your life and leave the series alone. Jonny Horror, i am with you......if ED 1, 2 Army of Darkness was all i had to watch the rest of my life......i would be just fine.

NO REMAKE. The thing that makes Evil Dead so awesome is the shitty quality in which it is made. Evil Dead for would be a blast to watch and they should just film it with shitty equiptent again haha. And horror chick...c'mon. If you are a big fan of Raimi because of "the grudge" and spidey...take that horror right out of your name. Watch evil dead and type up a 5 page report for us all to read before you claim you self to be a horror lover. The grudge sucked ass.

Raimi also said he was done with Spider-Man movies. Soon as the 3rd one hit the theaters and the results came in, he said with a good story, he would be up for doing another one. I guess by good story he means more money. He changes his stories about as much as Robert Englund does with Freddy vs Jason sequels.

How the fuck hard would it be to write something original? The script in the Evil Dead's have always been bare bones. All you need is Bruce, some cheap special effects and some creative camera work. They could turn a good sequel out in a couple of months if they wanted to.

I really love the first Evil Dead because it plays out like every one making it was high at the time, and I never enjoyed the sequals because it felt to me like the filmmakers were asking themselves "what would we put in here if we were high?" but completly missed the surrealism of the first in exchange for just being silly. Remake? Hell no.

The first Evil Dead movie is, IMO, one of the BEST horror movies ever made. That's probably why I have a problem with Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness. The first movie was straight up horror, gore and creepiness. It was one of those classics that had that high suspense feel to it. The second one retconned events and characters from the first movie and made it all comedy-horror. Army of Darkness wasn't really horror at all, just pure comedy with some monsters running around. If Raimi sought to do a retcon remake like that of Evil Dead 2, I'm totally against it. The first movie is gritty, low budget, and brilliant. That adds to the creep factor. Like how they all arrive at the cabin(totally creepy cabin in the middle of the forest) and that porch swing is moving by itself, hitting the wall. Thump, thump, thump, then it suddenly stops. The movie's fuckin BEAUTIFUL!!!

Not to complain or anything because I am really excited about all these remakes, but why? Is this the year of remakes or something? All I have been seeing is remake of this, remake of that. Bruce Campbell better play Ash if they do make a remake. He's still pretty young so he can still do the part.

I will honestly never forgive Raimi for two things. 1. Spider-Man 3 2. Sidelining Freddy vs Jason vs Ash I read that comic. It was actually pretty great. I'm pretty sure most of the fanbase would of been pleased because it was a good representation of Ash, as well as Freddy and Jason. Screw Raimi for making sure it never got made. He wants this damn remake for some odd reason instead, rather than what all the fans are asking for: Evil Dead 4. Lets face it folks...the Sam Raimi we loved once is gone. This is the new "businessman" Raimi, who looks to make the big bucks with that Ghost House crap.

I think we all agree that a remake would just be fucking wrong, I mean name one GREAT remake! The Evil Dead is one of the greatest horror movies to have graced any screen so why the holy hell would they ever mention a remake. Why are they making the fans wait soooooooo damn long for these movies? That is horror in itself. I would have personally thought Sam would have jumped at the chance of having his name associated with two great horror icons and possibly a third if they decide to shoot Pinhead with them. Sam really hasnt done much of his own lately so it would be an epic event to see something that he has had full involvement in that isnt Spiderman or remakes of already great horror films. It seems to be their marketing strat nowadays, to piss off the millions of fans and attract a new generation whilst leaving us out on sidewalk in tears whilst tearing up our autographed copies of Evil Dead stuff...Just like they will be doing when those HACKS at platinum dunes remakes Elm Street! Friday the 13th! and many many many many more. Where is Ted Raimi, could he not take over the Evil Dead franchise? or Bruce Campbell for that matter those seem to be the only two that still give a crap.

bloodypete, there was actually a time when directors and writers put their all into remakes. The Thing was a good remake. The Fly was a good remake. But that was the 80s. Times changed and directors and writers aren't looking to make the best remake ever, but are looking just for yet another quick cash payoff. So yeah, gone are the days with horror's masters treated the genre with kid gloves. New we basically got greasy teens working at a fast-food stand, their pimples popping over the burger meat as they slam it down on the bun and toss it out without care.

A film version of Evil Dead: The Musical would be a grand idea. This would continue the series’ spiral into silliness. Another problem that comes to mind is that it seems that Ghost House Pictures seems to specialize and focus on re-makes. They don’t even want to try anything original.

This remake will be extremely pointless because the original story to the first Evil Dead only works on a low budget level -only 5 characters in one location which isolated. The isolation is what allowed the terror. The gritty 16 mm makes it visually rough and adds to the effectiveness of the gore! The same goes for the Last House on the left with it's cheap but effective feel (apart from the gore part). The stupidity of even thinking about doing a glossy remake just tells you that the only reason these 'filmmakers' are producing them is so that they can get another swimming pool in their 3rd mansion on Sunset Boulevard. If you hate 90% of all remakes as I do, make a stand and don't ever pay to see a remake again. So far the only remake that was ok in my opinion was The Hills Have Eyes remake, ALL the rest sucked!!
