While French director Alex Aja puts the finishing touches on his remake of MIRRORS for 20th Century Fox, he's also prepping a remake of Piranha for Dimension Films. Planned to be shot in 3-D, there is a lot of speculation about what direction Aja will take his latest horror opus. This afternoon Bloody-Disgusting had the chance to chat briefly with makeup effects designer Greg Nicotero who revealed that the remake will deliver "boobs, blood and gore!" Read on for the skinny.
Bloody-Disgusting caught up with makeup effects designer Greg Nicotero (Grindhouse, Hostel II) today and he offered a few short words about the Piranha remake, Piranha 3-D, which is expected to go into production shortly. The project is the second consecutive project Nicotero has done with director Alex Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) after Mirrors, which hits screens August 15th. “This summer we’ve got Mirrors coming out which I saw the last 25 minutes of which was great. Alex is just an amazing, amazing director.”
“So we’re probably going to start [Piranha] up shortly and we’re developing some stuff with Joe Dante (who directed the original 1978 movie) and Nick Garrison.”
When asked about the take on this version of the killer fish flick, Nicotero says this one will deliver pretty much what fans want. “[Piranha] is pretty straight forward. It’s ‘Girls Gone Wild’ with boobs and blood and piranhas. You can’t really mess that up.”
ah i might see it i never saw the 1978 movie but i might go see it im not a HUGE fan of gore stuff like that i love the suspence nd some blood enough to make ur skin crawl hostel was way to much for me i almostt ran outta there
Yea no way in hell you can turn Piranha into Jaws. This is going to be one of those horror movies that's just fun to get drunk and laugh at the whole way through.
So......it's Porky's with carnivorous fish? Sounds like they're really going out on a limb to give horror a real shot in the arm. I'm just gonna go fuck myself.
Alex Aja has quickly become one of my favorite horror movie directors. If there's one thing he's good at, it's delivering maximum intensity. Yes, this movie sounds like it could be a huge pile of crap but I'll probably watch it anyway.
Aja's going to make a fun, all out gory killer fish horror movie. i don't see how anyone can complain. 1.) Aja's one of horror's biggest hero's and 2.) it's going to be a hard R rating & NOT the shitfest type PG-13 like Prom Night 2008.
have some faith in Aja.
Alexandre Aja has directed 5 movies, only 3 of which are horror. And 2 of those 3 horror films are "remakes." This upcoming film Piranha will be his 3rd "remake." Oh, and he co-wrote that simpering pile of garbage "P2." That's it. That's all we've got from him. 1 original, 2 remakes, and another remake on the way. And the vast majority of us have only seen 2 of those 4 movies, because the other 2 have yet to be released. Now that we've got Aja's contributions to horror in perspective, just how the fuck is this guy supposed to be the messiah of horror? How are so many people inspired to shit their pants at the sound of his name? Almost his entire horror career is remakes. This guy is basically the cinematic equivalent of a ventriloquist; just making cute noises through other peoples' movies. This man is not our god.
Thanks, Wharmon, I'm so glad someone said it. I'm only a little embarassed that I didn't get to say it first. Sure, Aja's definitely not worthless, but he's really shown us so little. I wouldn't call him a ventriloquist though. I'd say he's more like one of those blues-rock cover bands that plays at state fairs.
PIRANHA IS A COMEDY! The only reason they should remake it is to make it FUNNIER THAN THE ORIGINAL, not to make a SERIOUS VERSION OF A COMEDY! This is a terrible idea.
