While on the set of Platinum Dunes' Friday the 13th (set visit preview), we had the chance to chat with the writers of the film, Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. During the interview we got off track a bit and started to talk about New Line's Freddy vs Jason, which led to some interesting discoveries - like how the film was originally planned to end with Pinhead! Read on for the skinny on that and to find out which was harder to write, FREDDY VS JASON or FRIDAY THE 13TH.
Being a huge fan of FREDDY VS JASON, the conversation was destined to eventually roll off the subject at hand and onto the legendary battle that took place back in 2003. During the interview we discovered how the film was originally slated to end, if Pinhead (from HELLLRAISER) were to be involved in the sequel.
"Pinhead was originally involved in one of the ending," co-writer Marcus Swift tells us. "There were a lot of different endings that we wrote for FREDDY VS JASON, but Pinhead was in one of them."
His partner is crime Damian Shannon reveals what they wrote for that ending. "Yeah, the Pinhead ending was where - they [Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees] both get pulled down to hell at the end and they are still trying to battle. Pinhead comes out and separates them with chains and it’s sort of a ‘gentlemen, what seems to be the problem’ moment."
There were a lot of different scenarios thrown around for a sequel, all of which would be difficult to write.
"There was a time where they were really trying to kick around what you would do with a sequel, bring in somebody else? They took Ash pretty seriously," Swift tells us.
He continues, "It would be hard. They’re all hard. FREDDY VS JASON had some pretty campy moments but bringing in a third? It’s just unavoidable. It’s tough, it’s really tough."
Swift goes back to the proposed Pinhead finale. "To make a movie based on that ending, where Freddy and Jason are in hell with HELLRAISER? That is practically impossible. You can’t stay in hell, you need victims, somebody to relate to. It was be too fantastical, I think."
Swift thinks adding a third into the mix isn't the way to go, instead they should focus on more individual movies before doing a sequel to FREDDY VS JASON. "I don’t want to speak for New Line, but my guess would be, you make FREDDY VS. JASON, you make FRIDAY THE 13TH, you make NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, maybe sequels to both. But ultimately you’ll see that FREDDY VS. JASON fits in after those individual movies."
FREDDY VS JASON took nearly a decade to get off the ground, but remaking FRIDAY THE 13TH has got to be difficult as well.
"FREDDY VS. JASON was 100 times harder," Swift tells us. Shannon adds in, "So much harder, it was a matter of trying to blend both mythologies, which both of them went off onto different tangents. And didn’t really make sense how you blend those together in a movie and give them balance so that the Freddy fans are happy and the Jason fans are happy."
Shannon continues. ">Not to mention the process of writing FREDDY VS JASON, the convincing people the sort of dragging it to the finish line was a tiresome marathon."
Swift explains how it tooks years to get FREDDY VS JASON off the grund. "We worked on FREDDY VS. JASON literally for years. We worked on literally this project, for months. This was a very, very fast process, it was a great process. We got the script done very quickly, it was green lit very quickly, no other writers were involved and we went straight to shooting it. And now we are on set, we are tweaking it and it’s really coming together. I hope that it’s a great movie."
We'll all find out when FRIDAY THE 13TH arrives in theaters February 13, 2009.
Wow! the Pinhead ending sounds cool they should go back and shoot this for giggles I doubt Doug Bradley will turn this down. We need a rematch so stop giving us comic alternatives and just do the movie they will more than make the money back through the box office so where's the flum?
Of course I write the above hoping that 'they' will read and take notice...unless of course Bloody Disgusting wants to make it? Oh go on you know you want to!!!
I don't think any movie should ever be "a very, very fast process", good movies take time to make and the fact the script was greenlit so quickly makes me feel like the studio just want the movie out and the money in. Surely there should be someone along the line saying "hold on, this isn't quite right, if we're going to do this properly..."
They could not think of a good way to incorporate Pinhead into FvJ? They say it's because Freddy and Jason are dragged to hell, where there are no vicitms. A simple remedy would be that Pinhead would offer Freddy and Jason a sort of contest. The three of them will return to the world and whom ever rakes in the most kills can stay on Earth. If Pinhead wins, both Freddy and Jason return to hell with him.
in all honesty i think alot of people would have been content with the pinhead ending. its good, its a spectacular ending to a rock concert...ya dig?
didn't everyone enjoy the freddy hand at the end of jason goes to hell?
they shouldve done it...the sequel fro freddy vs jason is in comic boook format already featuring ash of curse and it was a relly fun read. as a film...your right too much.
I've read the sequel Comic Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash and I love that sequel, but I'm not sure if i would want to see it as a movie. I would love to see Freddy and Jason in a film together again but I think the remakes should be good enough right now.
I can't beleave they haven't had a sequal to Freddy vs Jason out in the movies yet. So many people went to see the first one. But I can't wait to see the remake of Friday the 13th and how Derek is gonna bring Jason back. As for Pinhead..I wish the Pinhead vs Michael Myers film (HELLoween)would have happened. I know this much, I would hate for the Freddy vs Jason vs Ash to become a movie...I haven't even read the comic because just the idea of it seems, in my opinion, crazy...I mean Ash is comedy...even though Freddy is at times comical, Ash is like Scary Movie comedy, like so stupid, it's funny. But Freddy and Jason, now they are a different story.
HorrorFan, I thought that the tone of FvJ fit in pretty well with the go-for-broke zaniness of ED2 and AoD. Besides, it would've been a great opportunity to expose Ashley J. Williams to more people.
if they make a sequel to freddy vs jason it wont be a direct sequel it'l be the new freddy vs another jason just wont work, i've read the freddy vs jason vs ash comic loved every second
Freddy vs Jason was terrible and it took them 10 years.Doesnt say much for the F13 remake which they've rushed.I really want a great nightmare remake but im not confident we'll get it.
hmm that michael myers vs pinhead wouldnt be a bad idea......wonder if the remake of noes and jason do good that they would consider doing a fvsj sequel.
that would freaking be awesome horrorchick!, i would hope they would wanna make a freddy vs jason 2 i mean the original did so well and the dvd racked in a whole bunch of money anyways that they should deny the horror fans a part 2, and that micheal myers vs pinhead would be fun to watch let the fight begin! :-D
Before Rob Zombie's Halloween, The idea of Michael vs Pinhead was considered, but because of the negative response of fans it didn't happen, that's when Rob Zombie presented his idea and they went with it. I say they should still consider it. Make it Halloween 9. Also I agree with the fact we need a fvj2.
they still need to use pinhead in the new movie.. we already had a freddy vs jason and several movies starring both but no one has made any recent movies of pinhead.. He needs to bought back to the spotlight.. I think it would be a much better movie if pinhead a big role in the new freddy vs jason..
they need to stop remaking movies honestly.. most of them are more modern day remakes with the same old story line.. anymore horror flicks are not worth my time because they are all pretty much the same just different actors or situations.. i want a horror flick that is going to scare the shit of me and that is really really bloody..
