Un-freakin-believable! This weekend horror took a huge step forward by taking on not only INDIANA JONES IV, but the highly anticipated SEX AND THE CITY in a three way box office battle. Obviously Rogue Pictures' The Strangers (review) took the number three slot, but to pull in $20 million opening weekend against two giant blockbusters in the middle of summer is such a wonderful sign. Hopefully this will light a fire under Rogue's ass to greenlight Hack/Slash, which is now near the top of my list as most anticipated horror films in the works. Hurray for horror!
I saw the movie and I wanted it to go down the box office. I seriously didn't think it was scary, creepy, and it wasn't effective. The acting and the ending was terrible. i hated The strangers.
This was honestly one of the best horror movies I've seen in a while. It had to be the most realistic and terrifying movie to come out since... well, The Descent, I suppose. It was great.
I'll admit I'm happy this movie was successful, but I've just got to know, does anyone else "HATE" that ending? I mean, it's not a regular horror movie, it's more psychological thriller so everyone doesn't have to drop dead like that as in a slasher teenage hack em' up movie. Come on!
Great news. This was an excellent movie in my opinion. I don't see how if you are a horror/suspense fan and did not like that ? It wasn't your standard gore/slasher fare, but so what? Neither was the original Halloween. It relied on a tense pace and psychological terror. That type of film is usually the scariest. Things that actually can and do happen are what really hits the switch in my opinion. REAL horror, not fantasy B.S.
2 thumbs WAY UP over here.
1 - Sex and the City New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures Distribution $55,740,000 $55,740,000 1 3285
2 1 Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Paramount Pictures $46,000,000 $216,881,000 2 4264
3 - The Strangers N/A $20,707,000 $20,707,000 1 2467
Those are the stats from the Yahoo Movies official box office take this weekend. Not sure where you guys are getting your statistics from, but twice in one week now you have reported false information guys. You really need to work on your basic journalism skills. Hate to report it, but with all your expansive progress you are dropping the ball on some of the basics here.
Time to write a retraction at least.
ROLLSTUHLWULF. Not sure if your saying BD said The Strangers was number 1, but if you read the paragraph above, it clearly reads that the Strangers was number 3. BD goes on to say that it was an impressive showing for a horror flick against 2 big blockbusters. That is very true.
I just got back from seeing the Strangers. I'll admit, my expectations were really low, but I thought it was great. It was solid suspense, from start to finish. And I thought the ending was great. Johnny Horror alluded to it, but I thought the best things about it were reminiscent of the original Halloween. The suspense was relentless, and it was really well paced. I hope the writer/director can keep up this level of quality.
@Rollstuhlwolf: Not sure where you learned to read, but the article clearly states, "Obviously...The Strangers took the number three slot..." According to Box Office Mojo The Strangers came in third with $20.7 million.
And while I didn't really care for the ending, the film was still good. A little slow in some parts, but still was able to get my heart pounding in a few other. I do have say, however, that if I spent countless hours tormenting these people mentally, then I'd at least enjoy a few hours of physical torture as well. Go Hostel on them. I see no reason to take my time getting them into the position to kill them only to do it fast like they did. Slow and fun is the way to go. <Dr. Evil laugh/>
i personally loved the movie. it wasnt the most orginal but i thought it was very good. the ending and some of the "scares" could have been worked on abit more though. but i thought 85-90% of it was good.
I must have been high or something. Suddenly the paragraph reads differently. I am wrong and BD was totally and completely right. I will never doubt again and always carefully read before making a comment.
Awesome news, this movie deserves it. I saw it Saturday night in a packed audience and it was terrifying. I agree with PromNight2008, it's the scariest movie since The Descent. Hopefully this will be the beginning of the end for the horrid PG-13 "horror" films.
I agree with mcbd016, its nice to see a rated R flick get so much attention so maybe they will see that it doesn't have to be PG-13 to make some boxoffice cash!
@Rollstuhlwolf: It takes a big man to admit when he's wrong. I was a bit of an ass and I apologize. At any rate, this is great news for the horror community. Hopefully this continues with The Happening and so forth. We need more original R rated horror films. I wish someone would smack those stupid dumb-asses over at Sony/Screen Gems. I'm tired of evening seeing their shit advertised.
AWESOME!!! Maybe this will show those fuckers at ScreenGems who keep putting out that pg-13 bullshit.
5 reasons why this movie rocked.
-- Simple well told story
--Bad Ass Masks
--Good Acting and pacing
--Location
--most of all...love my killers with no motivation or back story....don't need one....learn hollywood that people are scarier when you don't know anything about them.
Good news indeed! Ihad my doubts about them releasing this in the summer, but with a budget of 9 mill and taking in 20, it made its money back and then some. And the tally will only increase in the coming weeks. Good to see horror holding strong!
awesome! i cant stand satc that show was the most stupidist and annoying show ever made. bring on more horror flicks! it just shows that horror RATED R can pull in the money! hopefully the happening can do the same thing! and have soney gems not mae anymore PG13 moives or crappy pg13 remakes!
I wouldve preferred for horror to get a boost from a better film, everyone I know didn't care for it when they left the theater and thats why they wait for dvd for horror movies. Why couldn't this have happened with The Mist?
I am still a huge horror fan, this just doesn't seem to fall into that category to me, so I don't think it should rely on having to kill everyone to make it scary. Plus, it's getting really annoying to have that kind of ending, since they've released four home-invasion movies in the last year or so, and they all have a shitty ending. I guess I just don't like bad endings, you know, like The Mist.
