Rogue Pictures is set to release their home invasion movie The Strangers in theaters everywhere tomorrow and to get us all psyched for the film SpookyDan chatted with star Liv Tyler, who plays one of the victims in the film. Inside you can read his exclusive chat where Tyler talks about her role in the film, how she got behind the script and helped get it into theaters and how she was once offered a role in the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake!
Last week I spoke with the beautiful and talented Liv Tyler about her latest film THE STRANGERS, which opens this Friday at theaters everywhere. The film follows a couple (Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman) in a remote suburban house who are targeted by three dangerous masked strangers. Tyler talked with is about how the project came to her and how badly she wanted to be part of it.
“With THE STRANGERS I just read the script and fell in love with it,” Tyler tells Bloody Disgusting, “I really was just floored, I had taken a couple years working to spend with my son. And there was a pile of scripts and I didn’t know whether it was a scary movie or a drama, comedy or what. I just could not put it down! I just found it riveting, and loved it,” she continues, “As soon as I finished I called my agent and said, ‘PLEASE! What do I have to do; I have to be in this movie, I have to play this part.’ ”
Tyler was such a big fan of the script she has to lobby to get it made. “At the time the director Bryan wasn’t attached to direct it yet, and I had to go to the studio and kind of pioneer for it, which was something I had not done before. Bryan is such a good storyteller, there is so much to the story of their relationship, the film open on the worst night of their lives, so much is already going on. In the original draft there was a lot more conversations and things going on between James and Kristen. We shot so much that didn’t end up in the film; it would have been a three-hour film. I am so happy and over the moon with how it came out.”
To really get behind the film, Tyler must have been a big fan of horror, right? “I was kind of obsessed with horror films growing up as I was a kid. I remember my mom coming home to find me at 6-years-old in a pool of tears watching THE FLY and that sort of started it… I was so upset and torn up. Then of course CREEPSHOW and TALES FROM THE CRYPT, and especially the black and white NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD - I was obsessed with zombies for a while.”
Crazy enough, Tyler reveals something pretty interesting exclusively to Bloody-Disgusting –she was offered a role in a zombie film! “I know I am not supposed to talk about stuff like this, but I was offered a role in the remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD.”
In THE STRANGERS Liv Tyler plays Kritsen, a woman who has had some sort of confrontation with her boyfriend James (played by Scott Speedman), she talks a bit about building that relationship and how test screenings drive her nuts!
“I think Kristen was much more of a damaged soul than James, We discussed this on set endlessly, of why she was acting the way that she is. Its one of those things that when you watch it a few times you pick up on more bits about the characters, that were always one of the best things about certain movies, how they reveal themselves. As time went on because of things like test screenings, they didn’t used to have fu**ing test screenings of Hitchcock movies! Now we get everybody’s opinions, and people ask why did this happen and why did that happen? That’s kind of the fun of movies it doesn’t always have to be described!”
After the long road to getting the film into theaters, Tyler is proud of her efforts. “I feel really proud of this movie because I worked really hard on this… it’s really scary!”
You can judge for yourself tomorrow when Rogue Pictures releases THE STRANGERS in theaters everywhere.
