Scott Speedman Talks 'Funny Games' vs 'Strangers'

This Friday the latest home invasion movie hits theaters, The Strangers, which follows a couple in a remote suburban house who are targeted by three dangerous masked strangers. The resulting clashes force the couple to go well beyond what they thought themselves capable of in order to survive. Last week SpookyDan chatted with star Scott Speedman about his role in the film, along with his future with UNDERWORLD. Read all about it inside.

Last week Scott Speedman phoned SpookyDan to chat about the upcoming home invasion flick THE STRANGERS, which arrives in theaters everywhere Friday (May 30) from Rogue Pictures. He was enthusiastic about his part as he told us that what really make it scary is how believable the film is.

I feel like this is so different from UNDERWORLD,” he tells Bloody-Disgusting. “It feels much more personal, and like it could absolutely happen. There was something about this that set it apart in such a major way. During the first 30 pages of the script you really have no idea what kind of film this is. (Director) [Bryan] Bertino planned the slow burn aspect right from the start; I don’t think he wanted you to get comfortable. As I was reading the script I got up and locked the door, I was pretty freaked out!

Earlier this year another home invasions film hit theaters (WIP’s FUNNY GAMES, talked about the differences between FUNNY GAMES AND THE STRANGERS.

I thought Funny Games was hilarious, it’s a satire more than a horror movie. Its hilarious, I was rooting for the people to get killed. You can certainly make a comparison to THE STRANGERS, but really its just plot, and that’s where the similarity ends. I personally am not the biggest expert of horror films, but I can only tell you from reading and watching it, it really is the scariest film I have ever seen, it’s just a really, really great take on these kinds of films!

Speedman wrapped up with his thoughts on the UNDERWORLD series going further. “I think my time as an UNDERWORLD guy is over. The story can always change, but I think this third one will be the last.

THE STRANGERS hits theaters everywhere this Friday (May 30).

I've seen it and I found it funny at times but i guess some people thought it was a satire, wasn't trying to prove a point on how the audience loves watching violence

I doubt this will be "SCARY" but still I'm so excited to see it in a few hours!

Umm...that's not at ALL what Funny Games is. I've only seen the German original, but the new version was a shot for shot remake and I can't image it being funny. Sure, there are moments of effective black humor, but it's a fairly serious film and if you're rooting for the family to die, you're not someone I'd want to hang out with.

One of the things I loved about Funny Games was how little violence was actually shown on screen. I think it made the film so much better. I guess it's true what they say, sometimes it IS better when you don't show something and let the audience fill in the blanks. I still haven't seen the original yet, but I really want to. Just keep forgetting >.<

Funny Games was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It was slow, boring, DID NOT prove a point AT ALL. I was hoping they'd all kill themselves so I could go home after watching a little bit "scaryness".

Hey cool, I'm a word bubble now. Ya, this guy really doesn't sound like he knows what he's talking about. The movie could still be good. Fingers crossed.

The Strangers looks more like a rip-off of the french movie Them than Funny Games.

Funny Games actually has me looking foward to it's remake, and i hate remakes, I'm sure the remake can't be WORSE than the original, which I Hated, the plot was cool, but the "Killers" were so boring and lame....

@ jarofsap: screw off mate. funny games was awful. not entertaining in the least. not even a horror movie! @ bangor09: the strangers is NOT a remake of funny games. it's more of a remake of a film called "them." more of a loose remake at that

although I have yet to see Strangers (tomorrow night), I was talking to a friend who I went to see funny games with (why do people think this is a remake of that film -- it's completely different minus trapped in your own house sorta deal, and funny games just came out a few months ago). I actually said it was sort of like funny games - but i took funny games as more of a thriller (with comedic tendencies) whereas Strangers intends to be scary. I would say intention is a big difference between the films, but I'll have to see Strangers to see if that is correct or not. I liked Funny Games personally.

I think The Strangers is more of a remake of the French movie Them. I haven't seen the new Funny Games but I did like the original. Funny Games is one of those movies that you either love or hate - there really isn't a middle ground.

@South_park300, I never said that "the Strangers" were a remake of "Funny Games", I KNOW that they are two different films (although in this website a lot people seems to compare them a lot) I said the "Funny Games" remake couldn't be worse than the original which I hated,(I specially HATED when the killer keep talking to the camera) Sorry If my post wasn't clear... Cheers, mate! I got "Them" via netflix, still gotta see it though, and later will check "the Strangers" let's try to sort this out.

I don't see why people are having problems with Scott's take on Funny Games. That IS what the movie was about and it WAS supposed to be satirical. If you haven't even seen the new version, don't comment on it. The Strangers is pretty good. i was pleasantly surprised. Much better than average. Acting was good all round and although the story simple it was definitely effectively scary.
