A few weeks back we broke the news on Laid to Rest, the newest film from writer-director Rob Hall (Lightning Bug), which was acquired by Anchor Bay Entertainment for release this winter. On Friday, Bloody-Disgusting took a trip to the edit bay to take a sneak peak at some of the footage from the new slasher film. Read on to read all about it.
This past Friday B-D drove down to Eagle Rock, CA, where the home of Almost Human FX resides. Rob Hall, owner of Almost Human, greeted us at the door and took us on a short tour of his new workshop. At the moment he has put aside working on special effects to focus on editing his second feature film, LAID TO REST, which Anchor Bay has slated for release later this year. The tour came to an end in his edit bay, where he was hard at work putting together his slasher flick.
LAID TO REST is a terrifying story of a young girl who wakes up in a casket with a traumatic head injury and no memory of her identity. She quickly realizes she was abducted by a Deranged Serial Murderer and in an isolated rural town she must survive the night and outsmart the technologically inclined killer who is hellbent on finishing what he started.
The second we sat down, Hall quickly queued up a clip from the film, which featured Bobbi Sue Luther waking up in a casket. After banging and screaming, the casket falls over and she tumbles out. She doesn’t know how she got there or what’s about to ensue… the scene rolls quickly into the first “death sequence” of the film, which leaves a mouthful of blood all over a glass window.
The film has yet to be color-coded, but Hall still tells us about the equipment he used, and how it will look when completed. The camera used to shoot the film is pretty impressive and the fact that they’re using Final Cut makes life much easier.
“We shot the film on the Panasonic HPX-3000, which is essentially Panasonic’s equivalent to the RED CAM or GENESIS. We shot and will post the movie completely tape-less,” he continues, “all of the HD media is captured on P2 memory cards and transferred to hard drives and Tran Coded to edit in Final Cut. The format is literally a filmmakers dream – having the flexibility to edit a scene that you shot 2 hours ago right in the field. It’s amazing and is making our post-production on LAID TO REST that much quicker. And most importantly, the footage is stunning.”
After we chatted a bit he popped on a prison scene, which had some temp color adjustments used to give us an “idea” of what the final product will look like. You can take a look at the still below to see exactly what we saw. Can you imagine how sweet this will look on Blu-ray?!

Something I found very interesting about all of the clips we were shown was that the temp score being used was “Ghost” by Nine Inch Nails. Hall tells us that is kind of how he wants the final score to sound.
“With the score I don’t want anything too traditional. I'm temping in a lot of “GHOSTS” from NIN but the eventual sound will be kinda out there and unique.”
But the real question everyone has on their mind is, how cool is the killer?
Nick Principe plays the killer in the film. He rocks a sweet mask and uses a video recorder in a very unique way. It’s menacing not only seeing him attack, but also knowing that you’re also on camera. Hall explains to B-D that the technology used by the killer has an important place in the film.
“I’m a technology junkie. The killer in the movie is kind of a metaphor for technology and how we as humans are scared of it,” he continues, “also when it [technology] is working for you it can save your life and when it’s not it could get you killed.”
The best horror movies have a serious reflection on today’s society, what is more relevant than technology? Hopefully Hall can translate this into some serious scares for horror fans when LAID TO REST arrives this winter.
Watch this spot for more on the film soon and also note that Anchor Bay will be world premiering the trailer and official poster at this July’s San Diego Comic Con.
