One of the first real zombie movies can be attributed to Ed Wood, who directed the infamous PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, arguable one of his only "good" films. It was only a matter of time before an indie company pulled a NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 3D and put a modern spin on a freebie collecting dust. Inside you can read about Plan 9, John Johnson's remake of Wood's film from 1958 that's now public domain.
From the newly launched official website:
Now, in time to coincide with the 50th anniversary of "Plan 9 From Outer Space", director John Johnson – along with his production company, Darkstone Entertainment – is poised to remake the classic film. Simply titled "Plan 9", the remake will be a serious-minded retelling of the original story, paying homage to the spirit of Wood's film without resorting to camp or parody. The film will focus on the horror and science fiction aspects of the original, but will also be largely character-driven. Johnson's goal for "Plan 9" is to make a film that honors not only the original source material, but also Ed Wood's intentions when he made "Plan 9 From Outer Space". Wood's plan was to make a very scary sci-fi/horror film, and Johnson wishes to do exactly that – create a film that Wood would have enjoyed, or perhaps even made himself, if not bound by the technological limitations placed on filmmakers 50 years ago.
"Plan 9" is being made with the blessing and participation of Conrad Brooks, the sole surviving member of the original film's cast and crew. To go as a sister project to the remake, director Johnson and actor Brooks plan to do a commentary for the original film with a Q + A retrospective for its 2 disc DVD release with no set street date at the moment, however the new film is scheduled to premiere on September 9, 2009 (09.09.09).
This film should not be remade. The original was fine as it is with some of the obvious mistakes in there that made this an Ed Wood classic. You cannot recreate and replicate the authenticity of the original.
You know Hollywood has truly hit rock bottom when it comes to ideas if they have to remake Ed Wood films. Don't get me wrong, I have the collection of his films. But it is an era and genre that cannot be remade without distracting attention and appreciation of the original. If imitation is the greatest form of flattery, please don't flatter Ed Wood. HE wanted to make the movies. Not have someone else do it 50 years later. Let sleeping dogs lie.
What next? Is Rob Zombie going to remake John Water's "Pink Flamingos" with Sid Haig playing Divine? Wait, that would almost be cool. Almost.
I promised myself a few weeks ago that I wouldn't say anything negative when I blog on this site anymore. So...I have nothing to say about this news. Nothing good anyway.
What the hell is this? What kind of moronic, delusional, craptastic pile of vomit is this? Remaking the worst film of all time? I mean -- this isn't for artistic value -- hell, the movie's in public domain, so they don't have to pay any royalties. Just when I think the film industry has sunk as low as they can, some jerk-off gets a backhoe and proves me wrong.
