WHO Almost Played Jason Voorhees?!

I always love to play the "what if" game, and one of the latest games took my brain on a trip to Crystal Lake where we discovered who else was in talks to play Jason Voorhees in Platinum Dunes' Friday the 13th. You can read the story inside as told by your new Jason, Derek Mears.

During an interview with Derek Mears, he tells us that he wasn't the only person in the running to play Jason Voorhees in Platinum Dunes' modern version of FRIDAY THE 13TH.

"It was me and Chris Nelson from THE TRIPPER," Mears tells Bloody-Disgusting on the set in Austin, Texas. "Chris is a good friend of mine. It was really weird because I heard a bunch of different stories, like people from different areas of the industry are like, 'Dude, I don’t know if it helped at all but I put in a good word with Brad and Andrew.' Like, that’s the guy you want. What I heard was that Scott Stoddard, they really trust him, and he went, 'Here are the two dudes that I think would be great. You’re asking my opinion? I won’t decide, these are the two guys that can do the part.' "

After Stoddard gave his two choices, the two of them went in to meet Platinum Dunes. "We went in and everyone to me is always like, well, how do you audition for Jason? All we did is we both went in and we talked in front of the casting director. They asked us different questions about our backgrounds, wearing make up and acting. I didn’t even know it was like a general meeting at first. Then, later on they called and they’re like, okay, you’re the number one spot. I’m like, 'what?'"

In the end Mears won out and he's so incredibly thankful for it. "Dude, I’m so blown away and that’s one of the things I am so thankful for."

FRIDAY THE 13TH hits theaters February 13, 2009.

Well, either one of these guys could've got the job done, but I do think Mears was a better choice. He's more tough-looking, and was amazing in the 'Hills' remakes. Plus, we got the same name.

Kane Hodder is Jason. Can you imagine somebody trying to recast Freddy

Many people played Jason before Kane Hodder ever came along. Nobody else has ever played Freddy. Your argument doesn't really stand up very well.

i agree... how fucking hard is it to put a mask on and walk slow, and kill ppl.. not very.. and as for sombody trying to recast freddy.. i really think they should! no offence to robert england! I love him, and he is freddy kruger.. but i would really like to see somone elses take on kruger, and don the make up and glove.. robert and the old nightmares are way to fucking campy, and when they remake nightmare i really hope its gritty, real, and none of those stupid fucking puns, or jokes that made the nightmare's so cheezey and campy.. dont get me wrong i love all the friday the 13ths and elm streets, but i really hope they do a good job with these movies. and stop casting these WB fucking loosers to be in these horror remakes. i have nothing aginst remakes.. just bad acting, directing, and writing.. i trust platnum dunes 100% when it comes to the remakes..

richard brooker pt3 was the best jason hands down. hoder was fat and bloated. his only good jason was 7 and that cant hold a candle to pt3 or pt4 ted whites jason. jason runs throughout the 2 to 4th film.

the funny thing about Kane is that he was a good Jason, but also stuck in the worst movies of the series.

Jhow...actually in parts 2-4 Jason ran like a goofball. It really wasn't until part 6 that he walked slow...I guess due to being undead. If you ask me, watching parts 2-4 now Jason was really kind of comical in his actions. I credit Cj Grahm for starting the whole walk slow and creepy thing. Kane Hodder did a good job but I am glad they went with a leaner jason...Kane's got too much bulk on him these days.

I hope this new jason will be along the lines of Parts 2-4 - though I do think Part 4's Ted White was THE BEST menacing & intimidating Jason ...

Hodder is Jason. Nobody else who played Jason is as widely known as Hodder, in my opinion.

Thank god Kane "I'm famous for being the fifth and probably worst Jason" Hodder is not going to be Jason. He SUCKS! Thank god.

I'm going to make a suggestion to those who insist on starting the "Kane Hodder is Jason!" chant everytime anything FRIDAY THE 13TH-related comes up. Why don;t you follow the lead of the DanielCraigIsNotBond folks and create a DerekMearsIsNotJason website? Of course, just like the Craig haters, you'll see this new movie when it comes out, and privately enjoy it. But this may be your best chance to make yourself a minor footnote in F13 history by getting 6 or 7 of your friends to join your "cause" and perhaps get the attention of the horror-related media. You can post all kinds of hateful messages toward Mears, scream how the producers have "raped your childhood", write flowery "open letters" to Platinum Dunes, accuse anyone who is optimistic about Mears' involvement of being a homosexual with a crush on him, and generally worship at the altar of Kane 'til the end of time. If all goes well, you'll do for this movie what the Craig haters did for CASINO ROYALE - give it a lot of free press, and pique moviegoers' curiosity. Either way, you'll have a forum for discussing Hodder's exclusive claim to a character he didn't create until you're blue in the face. And if it works out well for you, you can also create KenKirzingerIsNotJason.com, RichardBrookerIsNotJason.com, C.J.GrahamIsNotJason.com, TedWhiteIsNotJason.com, etc., etc., etc. None of it will amount to a damn thing, but when you're committed, you're committed. Or you should be...

Phil Fondacaro should play Jason...

Ted White. THE best Jason in THE best Friday.

No offense "undeadevilmadman" but as someone else said your claim is pretty much BS. How can you compare Englund's role as Freddy with someone playing Jason? YES we can all think of someone playing Jason besides Hodder, for fucks sake he wasn't De Niro and he wasnt the only Jason

Gapinglotus

I think it is funny that the gig Mears had between Hills Have Eyes II & Friday the 13th was a role in a soap opera.

Kane Hodder was the best Jason hands down, theres no doubt about that. The way he moved around in his movies compared to the other jasons, i dont think they stand up for nothing.

Horrorfan83

Hodder was over-rated as jason. Derek Mears is perfect for the role.

Its funny how people compare Nightmare on Elm Street with Friday 13th series, because Freddy was played by one actor in all of his films, thus far, (Robert Englund)...Whereas Jason has been played by 4 or 5 different actors...Im not saying thats a bad thing, its just when people make a claim saying this actor or that actor IS Jason...Its silly.. sure each actor brought something to the role, a uniqueness which distinguished themselves in each movie, but pissing and moaning about whom is the best of all the actors is fucking silly...Derek Mears is now the new Jason...give him a chance to see what he can do in the role, before shooting him down, because of inferior comparisons with past favourite Jason' actors...My hope is that he kicks ass and fires back at all his critics, by staking a strong claim to the role..If directed well, there is a strong possibility of this... Im looking forward to seeing the outcome...

I'm reminded of the words from late legendary director Bob Clark... He said that you could have the best actors EVER and big budget and what not, but if the script is bad, then the movie will be horrible. Now, if you had really bad actors, low budget but one hell of a script, the movie was going to be good. The reason why i bring this up is because, sure, he might make a great Jason (i'm sure he'll do better than expected) but what worries me is the script! Platinum Dunes, i can't trust them... As long as they AT LEAST keep a good storyline to it, i won't curse the gods like i did after watching TCM remake and The beginning...

From the looks of Mears, he resembles Brooker significantly. My only hope is he can capture his essence.
