Rumor: William Lustig Talks Possible 'Maniac' Remake
Sunday, May 18, 2008

B-D reader Brian S. chimed in this weekend with some interesting news, which at this point should be taken strictly as rumor. He tells us that the other night he attended "Rue Morgue Magazine's" special screening of Maniac in Toronto, Canada where some rumors arose about a possible remake to the film at a major studio. Read on for the skinny.

Director-Producer William Lustig was on hand to introduce the classic '80s film, which follows a schizoid, serial killer who randomly stalks and kills various young women in New York (something he sees as revenge for the mistreatment he got while being raised by his own abusive mother). Brian asked him a few questions, one about a possible remake. "Has any once approached you about remaking MANIAC, and how would you feel about it?" His reply, "I would feel great about it because it's money, and yes we have been approached..."

He continued to share with the audience some of the details including that they are in negotiations with a major studio to remake the film. The budget would be $12 million and it will be directed by a current high profile horror film director.

Once again, please take this strictly as rumor until confirmed.

without Joe Spinell I think this is a bad idea. Plus no Savini gore effects? I vote no, but if it's made I'll still see it.

Gotta love that gory 80's artwork.

It's a classic, a thing unto it's own. Gotta see it, trust me. It's a strange, creepy low budget B-movie from the 80s, so don't expect lots of action like we get in modern films -- it's more of a slo-burn character study, featuring some good gore FX from Tom Savini. But it's a landmark film, in terms of totally pissing off lots of cinema-violence watchdogs back in the day. It kicked off a real media firestorm which shone a very harsh light upon our beloved genre, and it forced some movie makers to tone down their act for awhile.

I absolutely love Maniac, but it's one of the few movies I actually think needed a remake. A lot of areas in the original could be improved upon in a remake with the right people, I believe.

I knew another remake was going to be revealed, I mean, we went very long (a week?) without another remake announcement. This is Bloody-remake.com, of course

I love this movie. I don't mind remakes anymore. I can't do anything about it.

I wouldn't mind a remake, but there is no way they can improve on the Tom Savini shotgun scene. That might possibly my favorite slasher movie death scene, and Lustig knows suspense (public bathroom scene). If this does get made the director is going to have a lot on his plate.

As long as it's not PG-13 and an unrated version on dvd.

I have nothing against remakes, but some are pointless. Halloween and TCM are my top 2 fave horror flicks, but I could see how they can be remade. But Maniac is very much the anti-Hollywood type of movie. There is no way any studio would make a movie like Lustig did without having it toned down. I don't mean tone down in the sense of PG-13, but the mean spirited kills would be gone.

I think a remake could be great. Maybe they could remake it in the vein of Grindhouse.

you know what...i'm making peace with remakes.... and thats not to say i like it ...but basically it means we're very likely to get a nice special edition dvd.. ...maybe platinum dunes will do it...at least that way it wont be pg13... yeah...theres nothing we can do to stop the remakes... it sucks

Worst decision ever. No Spinell, no Savini. Possible CGI crap. And there is nothing to improve on. Maniac is perfect the way it is..

I'm the the one who actually asked Bill about a Maniac remake at the Rue-Morgue screening and while it's hard to hear a director admit it's all about the Benjamins (or for my fellow Canadians - the 'Bordens'), I believe that Bill will do everything in his power to ensure the remake has the same grit and intensity of the original. He mention that a high profile horror director has already been determined. I think Eli would do it justice (and based on his Maniac inspired Hostel poster he's clearly a fan - in fact Bill mentioned that Eli sent him a signed copy of that poster, which he now has hanging up in his house). I think it's a good time for a Maniac remake given the level of brutality studios are getting away with these days. Finding another Frank Zito will be no easy task - I truly believe Joe's performance was one of the best in horror history. Bill mentioned that he could see Tom Sizemore reprising the role. He might be on to something as that dude is a bona fide nutcase. I'm excited.

Tom Sizemore would be freakin perfect!! Good call.

i hate seeing a promising young directer go the remake route...which seems to be happening far too much now... basically if you make a great film and you're not american we're going to remake your film and have you remake one of ours... if you're not foreign we want a sequel to your film and you can remake something...don't you worry...we'll figure something out for you
