'Dawn of the Dead' Returns in 3-D? Sequel Planned!

Frankly I'm a little annoyed with 3-D already, especially after the lackluster NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS experience the past two years. If that proved anything, it's that you can't turn an old movie into quality 3-D, so it's nothing more that a cheap gimmick. Today it was revealed that there are plans to bring George Romero's Dawn of the Dead back to theaters in 3-D, with direct sequels plans also in development. Read on for the skinny.

From Fangoria:

"Producer Richard Rubinstein gave Fango the scoop on a wild development concerning an upcoming revival of George A. Romero’s DAWN OF THE DEAD. Rubinstein, the man responsible for producing many of Romero’s films as well as the 2004 DAWN remake, is planning to rerelease the 1979 zombie epic in true 3-D! In-Three, Inc. of Agoura Hill, CA will be responsible for the “dimensionalization” process.

“When Mike Messina [another producer on the DAWN redux] and I began to investigate using In-Three’s technique, I was very skeptical,” Rubinstein tells Fango. “I couldn’t see how it could be used without re-editing George’s film, which I was not going to do. I was also concerned that converting a 29-year-old movie would not be competitive qualitatively with the new 3-D live-action features being shot today. I was wrong in both cases. George’s DAWN OF THE DEAD can be reformatted into 3-D without any editing, and the image looks spectacular! As it stands now, it will take about a year to complete the conversion of the whole film.” Indeed, In-Three’s work has been hailed by George Lucas, James Cameron and Peter Jackson, among others.

Rubinstein also has plans to create a direct sequel to the original DAWN (!) and will be producing a new screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s DUNE, to be directed by Peter (THE KINGDOM) Berg. Keep checking this site for further developments on both DAWN projects.

wha? As if the Dead series didn't already have a convoluted enough chronology.

and he won't re-edit the film? Why the hell not? There are 3 or 4 distinct cuts of the movie already.

the 3-d added DEPTH i need jack skellington poking me in the eyeball. watching a movie with the visuals of a viewmaster (i might be dating myself here) is awesome. its about time the cinematic experience delivers something that we cant enjoy at home. for those too young to remember those nifty devices, here's the wiki en.wikipedia.org/wiki/View-Master

Nightmare Before X-mas in 3D was total crap and a total waste of my money. And Dawn doesn't need to go fucking 3D. 3D is fucking lame. And Dawn doesn't need a sequel. God knows it'll just end up being some shitty DTV piece of shit. It's like nobody will be happy until they beat the original three Dead films into the ground. Go make more shitty Star Wars movies, leave Night, Dawn and Day the fuck alone. -_-

I love 3D. Yes, it's a gimmick, but when used right it's awesome. "Monsterhouse" and "Nightmare Before Christmas" were both great, and "Friday 3" is definitely the best of the 80s 3D flicks. And "Dawn of the Dead" is one of my fave films. I can't wait to catch it on the big screen...in fucking 3D no less. Why is this such a bad thing. I think this is a perfect way to "re-present" older material to a new generation and get fans to support it in the theatre. And, if nothing else, maybe it will stop you all from bitching about remakes!

Thank you V.L.F. My thoughts exactly. Getting to see "Dawn of the Dead" in a crowded theater with a bunch of Romero fans. Its bound to get rowdy, and I can't wait. 3-D is gimmicky, but so what. As for the sequel... I don't care. If it's bad, oh well. If it's decent, chalk another one up for good R rated horror. I'm not going to judge it until I see it, and if it's bad I'll bash it until candy flies out of the motherfucker.

With every new, sequel and remake to zombie movies it takes less and less away from the actual films, you can only see the same premise so many times, the basic idea of zombies killing people and also turning them into zombies has been done soooo much, it's really gettin quite boring if you ask me, i love Romero's dead films, and Shaun of the Dead was a real original refreshing COMICAL take on the subgenre, but enough with zombies, lets get some new fresh ideas out there people... at least Mulberry Street took the basic idea and turned into a fresh idea in that what they turn into isnt just zombies but something else (those that seen it know what i mean) other good Original horror movies: deaths of ian stone, borderland, frontier(s), feast... new ideas fresh ideas that's what i wanna see!!! gimme more good new fresh ideas... Hatchet was a refreshing thing in that it was just a good new fresh slasher movie not based on some foreign crap not a sequel or even a remake, but something entirely new, the ideas may not be something wholly original, but at least it was still refreshing to get away from zombies & etc...

Just like it did in 1979, DAWN will have to go out unrated. However, back in '79 the major theater chains were much more willing to offer unrated features. Guess that means the 3D DAWN will open on very few screens, and more often than not in less than state of the art auditoriums. With all the PG-13 crap remakes clogging up the multiplexes, it doesn't seem like George's zombies can catch a break.

I love 3-D. I love Dawn. I despise conversion to 3-D as much as colorization. Bad idea. It's not good for 3-D, and it's not good for DotD.

A sequel wouldn't be bad if done right, just no 'society' stuff like Land of the dead or how I am Legend ended. That idea is played out just would be nice to see how they can transform the story or continue it.

There are is no such thing as a new premise. There are just good movies and other movies that are cheaper immitations. Dawn of the Dead remains one of my favorite movies and one I would love to see on the big screen, and I would actually love to see it in 3-D. So whine about it if you want, scream and throw your hands in the air passionately screaming "Blasphemy!"... I'll spend my money my way, you spend it yours.

It's awesome when they re-release original movies on the big screen, I don't give a shit how many times i've seen them at home, i'm more likely to go see vintage horror flicks on the big screen than most of the new shit they turn out these days...
