An odd announcement out of Cannes this evening as Andras Hamori's H20 Motion Pictures has green-lighted The Gate -- 20 Years Later, a sequel to the 1987 hit teen horror title. The film was originally announced here this past December as a 3-D remake, but it looks as it's now being billed as a sequel. Special effects wizard Randall William Cook, a three-time Oscar winner for his visual effects on "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, is still set to make his directorial debut with "The Gate -- 20 Years Later." The original film starred Stephen Dorff and Louis Tripp as kids who accidentally open a gate to hell in their backyard, releasing deadly pint-sized demons.
A remake would have been bitchin'! A sequel is so unnecessary, but let's see what they pull off. I'm picturing really bad CGI with some off semi almost B actors and a reeeally bad soundtrack. Oh yeah, no plot as per the second movie (of which we will no longer speak).
I'm praying for some silly-looking stop-motion pigmy demons like in the first movie. The original was an 80s camp classic. If they make a movie closer to the camp quality of the original rather than the shot-on-video disaster of a sequel, I'll be happy.
I wouldn't be surprised if they actually get Dorff for this. He needs the work at this point.
The title bares a strange resemblance to the Halloween 7 sequel, (Halloween 7=Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later, Gate 3=H20 presents The Gate: Twenty Years Later).
Is this the same guy that direct Monstro da Garrafa (english name Demon in Bottel)? If yes, holy shit was it bad movie. If they want monster makers, why not call Stephen Norrington? He is real film maker.
RELEASE THE KRACKEN!!!
I can't imagine what this film is going to be like. I loved the original and never saw the sequel. I guess we'll have to wait and see. Easy ways of totally not messing this up would be by not having a beautiful cast in their 20's. Also by avoiding the temptation of "showing off" with CGI. Let's hope for something a bit quirky like the original.
It could work if they have a young cast again, and I mean KIDS, like the first movie. Have kids in it and don't make it a PG-13 horror flick! THAT would work!!!!
Yeah, gotta admit, the freaky eye in the hand that he had to stab still freaks me out a little. That was a pretty damn good horror movie. Let's hope this sequel does it justice and isn't just a CGI whore-fest.
