We got a pretty early report for you guys regarding Platinum Dunes' planned remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. We're told that the deal is yet to be signed, but if everything goes as planned the Dunes would like to hire genre favs Damian Shannon and Mark Swift to handle the difficult task of bringing Freddy Krueger back to the big screen. The duo currently wrote the screenplay for the remake of Friday the 13th and New Line Cinema's 2003 epic battle of Freddy vs Jason, which tells me these just might be the right guys for the job. Watch for more news as it comes in and keep your eyes over at the Platinum Dunes blog for official confirmations.

well, no matter your opinions on F v J, if you know anything regarding that movie, these guys know the franchises like every other true fan out there. They know what NOT to do and that is prolly the most important factors. HOWEVER, its an insult to suggest that this movie can be done with out Englund, no matter what spin you put on it, if he isn't Freddy I know for a fact I wont see this until it hits cable cause it's the only voice we as fans can use to these film makers that remaking movies is one thing, but taking series stables out, esspecially one that IS the franchise just won't fly.

Well even Englund himself said that playing Freddy is no easy task anymore being "He's not a kid anymore". I am sure that Englund will have some kind of roll in the movie, but his days as Freddy might be over. I think Ben Foster would be a good fit for the role. He's a great character actor and he might be able to pull it off. I think if Robert Englund is happy, the rest of us will be happy as well. But if they can do the production with a stunt double and take their time with the old guy...that'd be just fine with me too.

Not too bad. As long as the movie is never made, Platinum Dunes goes out of business and everyone involved issues a formal letter of apology to all horror fans as well as some restitution money for their previous terrible movies and Michael Bay is run off to the mountains where he lives the rest of his life writing poems about how much he misses Lamborghinis and cocaine I'm happy with this choice.

Oh Fuck Off Vern and get your hear outta your ass. Give me a Platinum Dunes remake anyday over most of the other studios remakes. At least they do not attempt to make PG-13 horror.

I prefer Platinum Dunes doing this movie to Dimension/Weinstein's but it will never hold a candle to the original unless it has someone with real vision backing it. FvJ was ok from the standpoint of the attraction of Freddy & Jason in the same movie but without the gimmick it was another lacklustre sequel. Swift and Shannon are too untested to be given what could be a great movie. Don't shoot be down but Rob Zombie would of been more suited to this project then Halloween.

as long as itaint no pg13 movie.....and they cast someone who can be as good as robert enlund check hat englund IS freddy.....unless he just has acaeo in it ill be happy......this beter be good and stay true to the franchise. i hope they bring back some familar faces to the series. (heather langekamp, jacob, john saxon to name a few).

"The duo...wrote the screenplay for... Freddy vs Jason, which tells me these just might be the right guys for the job." Oh sure 'cause they stayed so true to the established mythologies of the two characters in F v J. Yeah, they're perfect--to fuck it up! Seriously though, if they can come up with more cool shit like the pot smoking Freddy worm then I'm all for it.

give it to the french or don't remake it at all.

I say the studios should wait till we actually see the Friday 13th remake and then decide which are the right people for the Nightmare remake

If they're going to remake it WHY OH WHY would they use Englund? Unless he's a minor, non-Freddy character.

The only nightmare that comes close to being as bad as Freddys Dead is FVJ. My enthusiasm for this movie just took a serious dent.

I hope Shannon and Swift do write it. I trust them. Their hiring made me comfortable with F13, and I definitely need a security blanket again on this one.

Really, it all comes down to who's playing Freddy. That'll be the deal breaker, not the writers.

Ben Foster as FREDDY perfect

Did an ok job with Texas chainsaw! but then Leatherface isnt Freddy neither is Jason for that matter Robert made that role...are they trying to piss off the fans? Why not make something different Platinum Dunes seem to be the nothing but remake factory standing on the shoulders of masters to rake in the dollar...does that seem right? Here I am moaning and I will probably go see the fucker anyway

bloodypete

On Freddy V Jason what is with Jason getting all the blood and glory? If the writers from that are doing this that means the ending will be one big silly gurlie fest with hugs and the pussy whipped Krueger...well screw that whatever happened to the grim endings that should be in horror.

Shannon and Swift are a HORRIBLE choice for a remake. FvJ was a HORRIBLE movie altogether. First of all, it couldn't get any more goofier than Freddy pinballing Jason around. SEcond, you don't bad mouth Freddy like Kia did. Freddy's suposed to be a shadow stalking nightmare monster. He has no equal in the dream world. He can't be overpowered. He can slice through people like they were a thanksgiving turkey. Damn those kids and their wannabe rebellious attitudes. It's so stupid when modern horror tries to protray modern kids as being soooo much more tougher and smarter than kids from, say, the 80s. That's sooooo untrue. Toughness and smarts never changed. You have modern kids THINKING they are more tough only because pop culture puts that into their head. The truth is, kids are just as chickenshit as they were back then.

When will this remake shit stop? Oh yes - when the younger crowd stops watching it.

BellPepper

So... you want a remake... with PLOTHOLES in it? Englund is/was/always will be Freddy.

PaulieWalnuts
8:30pm, May 13, 2008

You know, why the hell does Freddy need to be recast? The story is that he is a child molestor/killer right, and usually these are seedy old men, not MTV fucking kids. Cast Englund goddammit! If Christopher Lee can be made to look like he is friggin backflippin around with a light sabre, Im sure they can find a double for any "chase" scenes there might be... But not comedy Freddy, i want fucked up child killer Freddy!!!!

magnaderalpha

The problem is, I was actually reserving my judgement for the trailer. Even though I stand on my belief that most modern remakes are souless, hollow marketing ploys to appeal the the shallow MTV generation that suffers from ADHD, there ALWAYS is the chance the project could fall into the hands of a writer and director that respects the franchise. Respects it to the point that modern pop culture be damned, as do all the people wanting another CW/MTV horror movie. Someone aiming, above all, to make a GREAT horror movie, even if it doesn't have a Dawson's Creek-type cast. When they released that Shannon and Swift will likely take the helm, all sliver of a hope was washed down the drain. Game over, man. Game over! And, it's not like Swift and Shannon care about Freddy. That's evident in FvJ. Freddy was Jason's bitch. When you allow someone like Kia to spout crap at Freddy, you know the writers don't give a damn about NOES or it's fanbase. And that's what the remake will be.

i agree w/ disanti. i think Ben Foster would be an awesome Freddy Krueger! he's an awesome actor.

Fustigator

magnaderalpha, you make me moan. FvJ original scripts are out there. That Kia speech to Freddy wasnt in script. It's talked about in CRYSTAL LAKE MEMORIES too. The bit was Kia mistakes Jason for Freddy and says to him something like "I take back all the fear I gave you, I'm not afraid of you anymore." Then Freddy steps up with a "Wrong one, bitch" and Jason ends her. Not brilliant but better than the crap she spouted in the movie. Let me guess... next you are going to tell me that they wrote that Jason was afraid of water too (nope, not in script either).

JerseyDevil666

I hope they give a ton of never heard of actors a shot at the Freddy role and find a really good one so that there is no expectation for how the role will be pulled off.
