Here's what I'm hoping: I'm hoping that the 0bject crashing into the sea in the final scene is a UFO, because it makes it a lot easier to accept the idea that Clovie's an alien lifeform, as opposed to a mutation or a deep sea creature we never knew was there. I hope the sequel focuses on the same monster -- or his pissed off momma, but the same species, anyway -- because if this is to become 'America's Own Iconic, Giant Monster', as JJ Abrams discussed, I'm pretty sure he's gonna need to star in more than one film before he officially qualifies for American Icon status. And I hope they maintain the film's contemporary, hand held camera, YouTube-ish origins, because I, for one, found the whole thing to be much more immediate and believable as a result. It had this aura of seeing-is-believing, unbridled terror. And it left you feeling like, if this really happened, THIS is exactly the way it would look -- as something captured by the man in the streets. I think it was a damn smart film and I'm pretty sure it's one of those movies that people will still be talking about 20, 30, 40 years from now. It was a tale for our times, a product of our global climate, and a brilliant reflection of our collective national angst. How many films can even come CLOSE to achieving all that?!?!?
