'Chainsaw Massacre' Franchise Far From Over?
Sunday, May 11, 2008

After Platinum Dunes passed on bringing a third TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE into theaters, it sounded as if the legend had officially come to a close, but Leatherface will never die and neither will the franchise. This weekend some interesting news hit the web that teases that a new entry is in the works, only without Platinum Dunes. Read on for the skinny.

Kim Henkel - who co-scripted the original TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE with Tobe Hooper and directed TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING - is developing yet another entry in the franchise, so he tells Fangoria. "I've just done the first draft, and I'm still unsure of which way I'm going to go with it. However, it's the first time since the original that I've done something that I wanted to do with it. I'm excited about being able to truly realize what I've put down on paper."

After the rights holders asked for too much money, the third film over at New Line Cinema was left in the hot Texas dusk. The new film is said to be set in the present and moves things forward.

Nothing official has been announced, so until then take this for what it's worth. If they ever did make another MASSACRE, what would you guys like to see?

Sounds like a gamble. One would wonder if they would they would follow the continuity of the remake and have a one armed Leatherface slicing and dicing texas teenagers.

I say just have the original Leatherface mentioned as dying sometime over the past thirty years and a new kid was raised as the new Leatherface for the present. It is the only logical explanation I can see.

I dug the remake, didn't care for "The Beginning" as much because it felt like an empty clone of the remake, which I understand that's basically what sequels are, or in this case the prequel. But it just wasn't different enough for me. But it definitely had it's moments. I don't know if there needs to be a third one. I'm thinking it's time to hang up the bloody smock and Chainsaw.

So wait, since he had something to do with the original line of films, would it be a sequel to those films or to the new ones? I thought of that after I posted all that other shit. And he should bring Mosely back as Platehead, with skin picking hangar in hand!

I agree with Zombie Hell, I don't think there's much else to squeeze out of the franchise, making an original Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie now would be very hard work.

Tricky, do we follow the tradition of the Platinum Dunes movies or try something different? By different I dont mean the extreme crapiness that was Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation staring Renee Zellweiger! That sucked...maybe it is time the Hewitt family moved and went where the meat is. I can think of nothing more terrifying than the Hewitts living in a large populated area.

Since Leather is at New Line with both Freddy and Jason maybe its time we had a monster mash to remember! Though there wont be much banta being flung about between the three icons maybe it would be good to get Sam Raimi to sell Ash to New Line so we can have people we want to hear spewing the cheese ball lines and not just useless fodder.

But I don't know what they'd do without R. Lee Ermey though. That guy pretty much owned every scene he was in.

I really liked TCM Beginning and would like to see a brutal horror sequel to the remake set in the present with Leatherface. If not how about developing the original idea of TCM 2 about a whole town full of cannibals and going in the same comic direction of TCM 2,this time mocking the remake. Oh and get Dennis Hopper,Bill Moseley and Ken Foree back in they're old roles.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that in the new movie, the Hewitt family is gonna try to kill and eat some people who don't at all expect to be killed and eaten. I know it sounds crazy, but it just might be the sort of out-of-box thinking that could give this franchise a real shot in the arm.

Well, I think that this could be interesting. I don't know; I have mixed feelings about it all. On one hand, it's like, " Yeah, Leatherface is so fire." But he is now handicapped, so how is that gonna work out. If he's killing people with one arm, I'll roll out my seat laughing. I mean, he has one arm, ya'll. It won't be hard to get away from him. And even though your locked in the a closet with this guy, he can't neccessarily grab you on the count that he has to use the other arm to use the chainsaw. And on one foot, aren't we all tired of this same killers. They just got to stop with this. It is about time we get a new killer.

Make it the official sequel to the original 1974 film. Sally has been committed or arrested for the murder of her friends. She gives birth to a daughter who grows up without any knowledge of her real mother. As an adult she seeks out the truth. She finds her mother sick dying of cancer in at the prison hospital. Her mother tells her the tale. Sally sets out to find the Sawyer family. Fuck following in the footprints of the remake and prequel/remake! Bring it back home goddamn it!

How does having it set in the present make sense? Unless it's another remake, I don't think It does. Having a 60 year old leatherface chasing people around. . . That and he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who could cuccessfuly go into hiding for, what, about 35 years? The whole "son of the chainsaw" seems to be the only way that it would make sense at all, but still seems far fetched b/c, again, the whole hiding for 35 years thing. Unless it's just a remake set in the present day. Not that that whould be good. . . two remakes within a decade, but hey, they did it with invasion of the body snatchers. Whatever. I really didn't like the original, and the remake was just another slasher with creepier aesthetics.

The idea i had was before they made the beginning, it popped into my head as soon as i left the cinema after the remake, hoyt's dead, the family has moved, leatherface has one arm, but he wears a dirty 80's prostestic arm with a chainsaw attached which he grabs with his one arm & grinds away at victims. Have it set in the 80's with a real chainsaw 2 feel, maybe even bring back the stretch character, hell you could even bring back lefty taking revenge after one his brother's kid got kid(the kid could be anyone one of the kid's from the remake or the beginning) & thats it. Of course with andrew B back as leatherface. They could even have a go at one of the comic ideas from the last couple of years, they were all pretty good.

Please connect it to the original films - these new ones couldn't hold a candle to the true raw grittiness of TCM '74 or the gore factor of the next two. And I actually LOVED "The Return of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (TCM: The Next Generation). In it's original cut, the film was much more enjoyable. The characters were developed better, the death scenes were freakier, and the dialogue made more sense. Seek out that version and you might enjoy it better. Anyway, the only new TCM film I would pay to go and see is something connected to the first 4 and dismisses the terrible poppy remake and prequel!

I think bringing the story to the present is the only place to go if the franchise is to continue. I would totally agree that Leatherface would ridiculous at this point, probably 60+ years of age by now. Maybe they had offspring that has continued on? Makes more sense. Please, just don't tard it up with trying to make us believe that Leatherface is still alive and swinging the saw.

I bit the bullet and watched the remake once... but found myself staring in open mouthed shock at how terrible of a film it was. And this was after I'd heard contrary opinions... I mean, it was horrible. The only saving grace of that movie was R. Lee Ermy, who phoned in a terrific performance as a nutcase sherrif and head of the family. Leatherface took second bill to him... so I hear "The Beginning" was much better, so I suppose I'd like to see a good hardcore gore film with alot of brutal chainsaw deaths and hard hitting cannibalism run amok. I see no problem with a prosthetic arm, see no problem with a continuation of the story since the family was said to have gotten away, and no problem with them being on the lamb for 35 years... weirder things have happened in real life.

First of all, he (Kim is actually a man, not a woman) directed the fourth film ('TCM: The Next Generation') and not the prequel to the remake ('TCM: The Beginning'). I'm terribly worried that the director of 'The Next Generation' is working on another TCM. I checked imdb.com and he also wrote 'The Next Generation'. So he co-wrote both the best of the movies and wrote and directed the worst of the movies. At this point, I'd rather just see a movie to bridge the gap between the remake and 'The Beginning' so the film ends with the hitchhiker from the remake escaping at the end. Please, keep Kim away from TCM. We don't need another 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation'. He already killed the franchise once. Don't give him an opportunity to do it again.

Kim and Tobe owns rights th the names and character of the original and the title The Texas Chainsaw MAssacre. They do not however own rights to the name Tommy or Hewitt. So if this is true it will be about Bubba Sawyer. The original Leatherface, and to be honest. It makes me smile. Truth be told Gunnar was 19 when he made saw he is 60 something now. So face is too old too be out in front but he could be like Mars in The Hill's Have Eye's. Who's too say this family didn't kidnap more people, and force one of them to carry a baby. It's born a boy and Gunnar/Leatherface grows him up too be just like him. Sally got away who's to say she wasn't preggers. Did they buy into her story of what happened, thus commiting her to a loonie bin, or did they suspect her of the murders and lock her up. Of course theres no one there when they go out to the house/area. Sally has the baby and it's taken from her. It grows up, it wants to know who it's real mother is. It finds out. Sally dies and it sets out to find the family for revenge. If it is not the daughter then a group of college students making a documentary find sally, interview her on what happened, and then they head out to the site to re-enact the event for theyre documentary. The real Sawyers come back home and kill these kids of one by one.
