It was only a matter of time before someone acquired the remake rights to this franchise. It was announced tonight that Cerenzie-Peters Productions has picked up remake rights to the Thai hit horror series Art of the Devil, whose third installment debuted as the No. 1 movie in the Asian country. The real question is, will it be as bloody? Read on for more on this breaking news.
CP principals Michael Cerenzie and Christine Peters are producing alongside Eric Thompson and Tim Kwok of Convergence Entertainment.
While each installment of the series follows a new story line, what links them are the themes of revenge, black magic and mysterious deaths. CP will begin by focusing on the second installment, which featured a group of high school kids who fall victim to supernatural tattoos.
The latest movie, released April 3 in Thailand, earned more than $2.5 million during its first weekend to lead the domestic boxoffice. That beat out the $2.1 million raked in by "Jumper" and the $1.8 million grossed by "10,000 BC."
"Devil," which cost less than $1 million to make, has already been sold to more than 40 countries.
CP will produce the project via its genre division, which just signed a $100 million production financing partnership with Ghostrider Entertainment. Thompson, who recently joined CP to head the new genre arm, was responsible for acquiring the franchise from Bangkok-based Five Star Production, one of Thailand's oldest production and distribution houses.
Colin Geddes will co-produce. Geddes is also the film programmer of the Midnight Madness selection at the Toronto International Film Festival where he has introduced genre directors such as Eli Roth (Cabin Fever), Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes), Prachya Pinkaew (Ong Bak), and Takeshi Miike (Ichi The Killer). Last year's selection included the world premieres of George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead and Dario Argento's Mother of Tears
"There is a wealth of material that we feel culturally translates extremely well from the pan-Asian regions, and we feel we have an amazing franchise on our hands," Peters said.
Meanwhile, CP is starting preproduction on horror film "Rites of Spring." Also, Kwok's Convergence is in preproduction on "Clocktower," helmed by Eric Valette ("One Missed Call").
I check this particular site several days a week to check up on film news and it seems as if at least once a week I'm reading about a new remake in the works. No, really, at least once a week. Has this honestly not gotten ridiculous yet? Seriously, how much longer before it gets ridiculous? How much longer before fans have to resort to waving signs and petitions outside theatres in order to have their demands for original movies heard, let alone met? I think the recent boom of appreciation of foreign horror films in the last 6 years or so "is" due to the remakes. However, it's not that the remakes are bringing them to our attention. But rather I think that the American horror industry has pretty much become a one trick pony and has forced fans to look outside the domestic sphere in order to see anything even remotely different or unusual. It's like when you first noticed that your dog didn't like you anymore, because your friends would feed him scraps off their plates when you've always stubbornly refused to give him any treats beyond the occasional milkbone. Stop trying to throw us a milkbone and give us an actual movie we haven't already seen.
Thank you, BloodFlow. This is the first time anyone has shown appreciation for my writing since my brown-nosing English Comp instructer in high school. Hey, do you think the guys at this site would let me write an editorial column here? Perhaps an angry asshole's outside opinion would add an interesting element. Also, I'd be an absolute whore for the least bit of extra exposure.
I knew it was only a matter of time before they re-made this, "Art Of The Devil" is prolly my favorite series of asian movies adie from The "The Eye" Films, and even though i knew they'd re-make i just hope they dont fuck it up royally
I want these remake douchebags to tackle something they don't realise they can't handle. Like Tetsuo or something. I'm soooooo sick of this shit. I guess I continue to look like a snob because I STILL have to tell everyone the best horror isn't coming from this continent these days.
