IFC Entertainment has acquired North American rights to the Spanish thriller Fermat's Room ("La Habitacion de Fermat"), which had its North American premiere at the Tribeca fest Friday. Luis Piedrahita and Rodrigo Sopena's feature debut tells the story of four mathematicians with checkered pasts who find themselves in a room where the walls are literally closing in on them. Only their intellects can solve the riddle that will save their lives. The film will debut on IFC's Festival Direct VOD platform this summer. Watch the trailer inside
This movie is actually quite different from Cube, and it has acting performances that beat Cube's ass, take Cube's lunch money, and send Cube running home to mama for a gumball and a kiss. The downside is that the mathematical concepts posed in the movie really aren't all that heavy or confusing, and the big mystery/twist isn't really all that unpredictable or earth-shattering. All the same, it's entertaining and does a hell of a lot more than make the minutes go by.
