Guillermo del Toro Wants 'Hellboy III'... For a Price

While Universal preps the release of Hellboy II: The Golden Army on July 11, director Guillermo del Toro is already thinking about a third film - and sealing off the franchise for good. Inside you can read about what it would take to have him return for a third film and what the plot would be - but don't expect to hear anything about it anytime soon as Del Toro just signed the dotted line to direct THE HOBBIT.

Guillermo del Toro, writer/director of Hellboy II: The Golden Army, told SCI FI Wire that he would like to do a third film if the upcoming sequel does well, but no more.

"If there was ever a third one, I would really make sure that we at least sign a contract that there is no more," del Toro said in an interview at New York Comic Con last week. "No prequels and no sequels: nothing. If that happens, then there is a third one we have planned, and the seeds are planted in this film."

Hellboy II: The Golden Army departs from Mike Mignola's comic books, with an original story that centers on a fantastical realm based on mythology created by Mignola and del Toro together.

If a third installment becomes a reality, del Toro said the story would shift back to the pulp mythology of the original comic-book series. "The idea for me is to bring back the Nazis characters, but bring them back in a way they would operate now," del Toro said. "Meaning, what public face would the Nazis have in 2009/2010? How rich would they be? How in charge could they be? It's not this group of freakies that hide in the sewers, but people that are incredibly rich."

Please happen, that sounds fucking awesome. Im happy that he's directing The Hobbit I think he's the perfect choice sort of like Peter Jacksons other half.

Number 1 was one of those sleeper movies for me. At first it didn't appeal but when I sat and watched it I became engrossed in everything going on. Saying that everything I've seen for Number 2 looks freaking sweet. So hopefully the actual movie as just as cool.

He's doing the Hobbit? That's amazing, they couldn't have given it to a better director.

Can't wait for this movie. Read the Hobbit though and didn't really care for it, so I can't say I'm thrilled that he's going to be doing it next (I was hoping for the Lovecraft movie "Mountains of Madness") but for people who like the Hobbit, this has got to be welcome news, especially after Sam Raimi was rumoured to do it for a while.

Fuck him. He doesn't own the character, why should they stop it? There's a shitload of good stories, and I wasn't overly impressed by the first movie either.

does this mean "hobbit" will suck di*k,and fanboys will bitch and moan, and it'll still make 3657698798000000 bucks it opening weekend like the "star wars" prequels?

In my opinion Guillermo del Toro is brilliant and the more of his fantastic creative vision that makes it to the big screen the better. I actually can't think of anyone better to make The Hobbit as an alternative to Peter Jackson. Good stuff.

That would be great then somebody like Tim Burton can not come by and decide to make a few Hellboy movies & ruin the characters very smart move.

Well I don't see anything keeping the studio from making more of the animated films in the series. They've made two already...so the stories can continue on in one form or another.

"Fuck him. He doesn't own the character, why should they stop it? There's a shitload of good stories, and I wasn't overly impressed by the first movie either." I'm pretty sure that by this point, Mignola feels like its co-ownership between del Torro and himself. Have you seen the two together? It's like a love affair. Besides, you'd rather see them overdo Hellboy like what was done with Blade? I don't think so. Guillermo has a trademark style of his own and to take him out of the equation would be a big mistake. Then again, I loved the first film. If you want films closer to the source material, watch the animated films. There are two of them already and a third is on the way. That should tide you over, right?
