Tonight some crazzzzzy news hit Yahoo!, something that I don't think any of us could have expected to hear or could have predicted - gore master Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel) is aiming to make a big budget PG-13 horror film aimed at a more general audience! Before everyone jumps in and starts giving him sh-t for making a PG-13 horror film, let me be the first to say that I am fully behind this for two reasons. First, I think Eli is the type of guy who could make a good PG-13 horror film and second, it's nice to see a director avoiding the typecast. I'd like to see what else Roth has up his sleeve. What do you think? Read on for the story.
Eli Roth, the director of the relentlessly gruesome "Hostel" movies, is aiming for a family crowd with his next project.
Roth told reporters on Wednesday he is two weeks away from finishing a script for a science-fiction action film inspired by the mainstream hits "Cloverfield" and "Transformers."
"This will be my first big-budget, PG-13, mass-destruction movie," he said backstage at the music industry's NME Awards in Los Angeles. "I went total chaos and pandemonium."
He declined to detail the plot ahead of a "big announcement" next month.
Films rated PG-13 in the United States strongly caution parents that some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. But they are easier to market than R-rated films, which require viewers under 17 to be accompanied by an adult.
"I feel like I pushed the violence in R movies about as far as I can push it. I feel like I'm bled out. I wanna switch it up," said the 36-year-old protege of Quentin Tarantino.
"Everyone I know has been saying 'When are you gonna do a movie my kids can see?' And finally, I'm gonna make a movie that 13-year-old kids can see."
Roth was in theaters last year with "Hostel: Part II," the latest in a string of films belonging to the so-called "torture porn" genre. As with its 2005 predecessor, it revolved around hapless backpackers who are killed for sport by paying customers in Slovakia.
In the sequel, the tables are turned and one of the customers is castrated by his female victim. Critics were appalled and audiences did not exactly rush to see it. Still, it was profitable even before its DVD release, Roth said.
While the "Hostel" films and Roth's equally violent 2002 feature debut "Cabin Fever" were set up at independent studio Lionsgate, he said he would shop the new project to "the big guns."
Roth said his latest project meant he is not turning his back on violent movies and he expected to fulfill the needs of his bloodthirsty fans by shooting some gratuitous violence to include on an unrated version of the DVD.
While i kind of agree with cj_01976.(i hated hostel, cabin fever, the thanks giving trailer was awesome though,) Eli Roth's enthusiasm for the genre has me interested in this.
Kinda... ;D
(sorry if there's any grammer malfunctions, it's early here.)
I disliked his first 3 films, Thanksgiving was great though and shows that he does truly love and understand the genre. So that said I believe he could pull this off.
Eli Roth is the kid that jumps onto the hype wagon. He never did anything original, and the best part in all of his movies is the one where he casted Miike Takashi for a cameo in the first hostel... Also referred to as "that japanese guy" in his making of.... All of his movies are just polished holywood movies with some stolen shock moments from other movies, that "eye scene" from hostel? Yeah, kinda seen it before in Guinea Pig Mermaid in a manhole, but altho it was a lowbudget movie, it was far better. The heel being slashed when the guy gets out of the chair? A prop stolen from the kill bill set...
Eli Roth is a joke, all of his movies were pg13 with gore effects stolen from other movies just to create a hype and get more money into his bank account. This guy isn't in it for making good horror movies, but for making tons of money, and this news once again proves that fact
he's looking for mass destruction huh? uhmmmm, why couldn't he have done that with Hostel? pissed me off, everyone saying it was my kind of movie because it was just "so bloody and gorey", pfft, they obviously don't know me or have extremely weak stomachs
I didn't really care for Hostel, but really dug the second one. Cabin Fever is cool depending on my mood. I'm curious to see what this will turn out to be. Allthough shooting a gory version of the film (see link http://joblo.com/arrow/index.php?id=11948 )seems to go along with what jako was saying.
This does kind of suck. Beyond the gore i think the guy is a very talented director. But what do you expect? He's been ragged on for "only knowing how to show violence" over and over. If i were him i'd be sick of that shit too.
I don't really know why everyone hates him so much, the man has fuckin skills behind the camera.
And ya SF, I would've LOVED to see thanksgiving too.
I dont care for this new hollywood trend of PG-13 horror but the fact that Eli is willing to tread on new water and do something a little different. Im curious to see what he can come up with. Still would be happier with him doing R rated horror.
That is fine he wants to make a PG-13 movie. I think he is decent behind the camera but I think he needs to stay away from writing. I think that's where his weakness lies.
And what's the news on 'Cell'? I hope that's not the one he's making into a PG-13 movie?
Ive said it from the beginning, he is a terrible writer and director. He has no clue what the hell horror is. I don't care what he makes...R rated, Pg-13, it doesn't matter, because it's all crap anyway, if the name Eli Roth is on the title, it's going to suck, plain and simple.
i'll see it
but on the hostel films and any other in the same genre...
DO NOT USE THE TITLE "TORTURE-PORN"!
it demeans the genre and gives it a more negative connotation than it already has.
plus it doesn't describe the genre at all, i see the torture, but where's the porn part come in?
