Blockbuster Censors 'Inside' DVD Release?!
Friday, April 18, 2008

Over the past week I've been receiving a double does of e-mails regarding Dimension Extreme's Inside (review), which is now available at all retailers and Blockbusters nationwide. For every glowing e-mail from a reader who agreed with my review, there was one who didn't. The amount of e-mails that I received was pretty perplexing and out of the norm, which had me scratching my head - until today. We discovered that Blockbuster Video has censored the release of the French slasher film cutting a whopping seven minutes of blood and guts out of the film! So all of you haters who rented the film at Blockbuster, drop me a line because I am quite curious to see how bad it was demolished. Dimenson has an exclusive deal with Blockbuster, which sucks because Dimension Extreme is going to have plenty of unrated titles released through it. Screw you Blockbuster, I'm 28-years-old and don't need you to tell me what I can or can't watch. Man I'm FURIOUS. What do you guys think? I'm going to hit up Blockbuster today and go take a look.

Ever since I was a youngster I hated B-Buster for refusing to carry unrated horror films. Except, of course, Evil Dead 1 and 2, since they were two of the highest rented horror flicks. I supported as many indie rental shops as possible, until it became near impossible to find one remotely near me. Now they're at it, again? Remember that stupid "exclusive" version of Requiem For A Dream? What a bunch of fucking go-tards. Fuck them up their fucking asses.

see, this is why i deal with netflix. i've never understood what gave Blockbusters the right to change someones product. my best guess for the interference is because a baby's involved.this film can't possibly be any more violent than the SAW films.typical of american cinema though. it's alright to show shit blowing up or a woman getting her breast chopped off but show a child in peril or a penis and people lose their fucking minds.

If you dont want to buy it, download it. NOT renting the edited blockbuster crap will hopefully send Dimension the message.

Inside is one of the best and most brutal straight out horror flicks I've seen in a looong time and it deserves to be seen in it's uncut glory. That really says something about Blockbuster when even Wal-Mart (who is notorious for edited CDs) carries the unrated version...

I already knew Blockbuster would only carry the Rated version of "Inside". What is even more enraging is that Blockbuster has been carrying Unrated titles for a few years now, but for some reason only carries the rated version of Inside. Other Dimension Extreme movies like "Storm Warning" and "Automation Transfuison" were carried by Blockbuster Unrated. (but those two movies pail in comparison to Inside.) I also noticed a few months back that Blockbuster also only carried the Dimension Extreme release of the "Broken." Blockbuster is obviously singling out movies or something.

Aslo Blockbuster is a "Christian" based company. That might be part of the reason, they do not want anything to extreme. Yet they do carry a lot of unrated horror films now. Mostly everything that comes out at my store is unrated, unless it has the dual option or do not have an unrated edition.

I saw "Requiem for a Dream" in the theater, and was about to purchase a used VHS copy of the movie at Blockbuster a few months later, but when I got to the counter, I realized I was holding the "R-rated" cut of the film. I told the Blockbuster employee I didn't want the film because it was an edited version. She said, "They didn't edit out anything important, just some sex and violence at the end." No, you dense Blockbuster bitch, they cut out the scene where Jennifer Connelly rocks a double-ended dildo. That's important shit. I chucked a lit molotov cocktail through their front window later that night.

Blockbuster.com IS renting the unrated cut, the stores aren't. I just checked myself. The one in the store has an R rating plainly displayed, a listed running time of 75 minutes, and does NOT say UNRATED or anything similar on the package. They aren't doing anything wrong. The stores ALWAYS carry the most "wide appeal" version of the DVD release if the studio decides to make both. The stores don't rent the double disc versions of a lot of movies either, but you can still rent them from the online component. They are two separate things. This is nothing new, I don't know why everyone's making a big stink about it. Like I said, they didn't carry the unrated Hatchet either, but you can rent it unrated from bb.com. You don't think maybe at some point that Dimension was toying with the idea of a theatrical release and put together an R rated cut? They had to go through the trouble of submitting it to the MPAA for a rating, they're going to do SOMETHING with the R version. Once Blockbuster's exclusive window runs out for Dimension releases, you'll probably see it in more places. And for the record, they rent out plenty of unrated horror movies in the store - when the studio doesn't give them an R rated cut. The store version of Catacombs is unrated, for example. Long story short - they didn't CENSOR a goddamn thing. Dimension cut the film to please everyone, and since they have an exclusive (and limited time) STORE RENTAL deal with Blockbuster, the only place to find it (for now) is Blockbuster. Not the same thing at all.

I understand what you are saying, but what doesn't make sense is that Blockbuster stores are serving no real purpose by having an R-rated edition. They cannot rent it to anyone under 17 (just like the unrated version). It would make more sense when a PG-13 flick comes out in an unrated form that they would carry the PG-13 version so kids could rent it with less flack or having mom or dad sign for them. They would get more rental turns.

If this film is any good, an R rated version versus the Unrated Cut should not matter. I didn't watch the theatrical version of The Hills Have Eyes (remake) and have a reaction that was vastly different to the Unrated Edition. There was just more gore to enjoy in the Unrated edition. Why are people going to Blockbuster anyway? They're going through their death rattle - let them die in peace.

The film entitled "Descent" with Rosario Dawson was released to theatres with an NC17 tag and so was "Last, Caution" but at Blockbuster, "Descent" was rated R and "Lust Caution" proudly said it was "the R-rated version not seen in theatres" trying to convince buyers that it was extended when it was really cut down. There's dozens of lesser horror films from that period that may never see the uncut light of day, like Dead Heat. But these days it's simple: go out and get the unrated cut, whatever way you can. If it means skipping Blockbuster and buying the film or procuring it by, ahem, other means, then go for it! It is disapointing, though. in response to Se7enwolf- let me spell it out for you. Dimension Extreme has a deal with Blockbuster. The deal with Blockbuster probably includes an agreement that they have to cut their horror films to an acceptable "R" rating. So no, I don't think there is a little man in the back at Blockbuster splicing films. Obviously the studio did the editing. Also, the only place you can find an "R" rated version of this film is at Blockbuster. If you check the Dimension Extreme website you will see that it is only available in an "unrated" cut everywhere other than Blockbuster.

They have to get movies that appeal to the general public. In towns, like mine, a lot of people will not rent unrated horror films. Only the extreme horror fans will and they are hard to come by here. Most consumers will rent "R" rated films. So when Blockbuster is buying the movies to rent out why would they buy the unrated edition that will only rent out to horror fans or the accidental couple who watch and demand their money back. It just does not make sense, sorry if it pisses you off. They want to make money it all comes down to that.

Yeah, you have to look at the fine-print when renting from Blockbuster. I mean c'mon, they're the "McDonalds" of home video, of course they would only carry the most safest version available or none at all. I think I remember them carrying an R-rated version of "Saw IV" too, and that version was pretty hard to find in stores, but Blockbuster probably made it happen. Was anybody surprised that "Inside" was rented in BB in the first place?!!? Don't be shocked when this happens, just blame yourself for not checking the rating & runtime on the box before you plunk out that ridiculous $5 rental fee for 2 1/2 days. Boy do I have egg on my face...when I got to work I looked at the INSIDE box and it was rated R! I could have sworn I saw that Unrated label on the front. It makes no sense since it's a Blockbuster exclusive, then why would they censor it?! Sorry to everyone....
