'Friday the 13th' WILL Be R-rated
Thursday, April 17, 2008

It's pretty hilarious how far this has spread and that people actually believe it's possible - on other websites, in our forums and under our news posts horror fans have been speculating that Friday the 13th will be rated PG-13 when it arrives in theaters February 13, 2009. Today we spoke with Platinum Dunes producer Brad Fuller who addressed the PG-13 rumor and how ridiculous it is. Read on for the skinny and get ready for the return of Jason Voorhees at his best.

"None of our remakes have been PG-13," Producer Brad Fuller tells Bloody-Disgusting. "How do you remake a rated R horror movie and take the guts out literally and figuratively? What is F13 without sex, drugs and really, really long sharp machete? And why would we, horror fans ourselves, produce a movie devoid of the things that made the title so appealing in the first place. So let me say for the record, that the F13 that we start shooting this Thursday is a full bodied, rated R film."

He elaborates on just how R-rated this film will be. "It has insane kills that will be shown in all their glory- it has a group of college students who drink and even have sex. We are betting that if we don’t hold back that the audience will reward us for being bold in a time when some horror movies are playing the ratings game. So we embrace the R-rating Friday the 13th will have, and hope you (the B-D readers) will too."

Marcus Nispel directs the film, which stars Jared Padalecki, Derek Mears, Amanda Righetti, Danielle Panabaker, Aaron Yoo, Travis Van Winkle, Willa Ford, Nick Mennell and Jonathan Sadowski. Jason Voorhees returns to Camp Crystal Lake on February 13, 2009.

It was obvious that they were aiming for the "R" rating, but it's nice to hear it officially.

There's no way I would ever see this if it was PG-13.

good thing too! otherwise i wouldn't have even bothered with it! I'm sure I'm not the only one that would've skipped a pg-13 version.

I normally don't show a lot of enthusiasm for these remakes, but I must admit I was moved by Brad Fuller's comments. Besides, not that long ago all horror movies were rated 'R'. If you were under age 17 you had to find a way to get to see it like sneak into a theater or watch it at home when your parents were gone. It was all part of the horror experience - the fun of watching something you are not supposed to. The fact that a 13 old nowdays can freely walk into a horror movie is just plain fucked up. Where's the fun in that?

The MPAA is a waste of Air Conditioning. The arbitrary rating system is worthless, and it doesn't work. At all.

Zombie Hell
11:08am, April 17, 2008

I'm surprised anyone actually thought this would be anything other than "R". After 10 Fridays and Freddy vs Jason, all being "R", there was no chance they'd drop the rating... the backlash would have been colossal.

jkrouskop
11:10am, April 17, 2008

It's easy to sit back and say "I can't believe anyone thought this would be PG-13!". But with the opening weekend success of the PROM NIGHT remake, there was no guarantee that someone at the studio might get the "brilliant" marketing idea to go for the teens in theaters, and save the R-rated cut for DVD. Thanks for bringing this news, Mr. D, and a HUGE thanks to Brad Fuller - for letting us know, and for understanding what the rating means to F13 in the first place! Now how about a more detailed casting update - who's playing who, was Amanda Righetti recast in a different role or were reports that she was to play the "lead" misleading from the start, etc.?

I am envisioning a kill where Jason sneaks up on a girl performing oral on a guy, and pins her head to his "parts" with a machete, finishing the guy off by crushing his skull. THAT would be some good R material.

12:32pm, April 17, 2008

Zombie Hell: in response to your post - I agree with your statement - but at the same time it reminds me of another fun and brutal R rated series that DID spit out a PG-13 rating. All of the Alien franchise and Predator franchise - they dared to spit out a PG-13.... and to this day - all of us Horror Fans give them crap for it.

Death Bed

I could see why people might be inclined to believe they were going for a PG-13 rating. It is Platinum Dunes, after all. It's not like they exactly know what their doing.

JGrayland
12:38pm, April 17, 2008

I disagree, if they didn't make Amityville PG-13 (which it could easily have been) why would they do it for Friday the 13th? The whole idea never made a lick of sense to me; it was just another idiotic "Let's bash Platinum Dunes because Michael Bay is involved" tirade that got out of hand. Kind of sad that Fuller has to take time out of his life to tell you idiots that a Friday the 13th movie will be rated R. That's like Bay himself having to reassure America that his next movie will have an explosion.

horrorfan25
12:53pm, April 17, 2008

Even if the film isn't good the R rated material is cool. I like a lot of blood & guts and sometimes nudity. I hope this is like Freddy vs. Jason.

If it's ANYTHING like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake (considering it has all the same people behind the camera) then count me out!

So...in this remake is there no Pam Voorhees!? At all? I don't know what you think but a remake of F13 simply has to have something about our psycho Pammy ;) However, I don't like the idea of 'college' students (but it's about time they cast believable actors to play college students instead of 20-30-year-old 'teenagers' lol. We should have camp councilors back!

DravenX23
7:48pm, April 17, 2008

I made a Friday the 13th PG-13 comment because of how lame the majority of horror movies have been lately. I never said it was going to be PG-13. I was just worried that suits would see PG-13 crap making money and think *GASP* lets make it PG-13!

horror_movie_girl
7:54pm, April 17, 2008

Good hear it is an R but you know there is still going to be 12 and 13 yr olds in the theatre there to ruin it for everyone.

I said this before, Platinum Dunes has yet to make a PG-13 film, and I highly doubt they ever will, everything they have done thus far has been R-rated. I love the whole Platinum Dunes team, I just hope they keep coming out with good quality films.

Zombie Hell
10:20pm, April 17, 2008

Ok, I see where you guys are coming from. I didn't think of AVP. But I guess I'm just so used to Friday being "R" I couldn't picture anyone being foolish enough to think that series would be strong enough as a weaker rating. Honestly. I've been watching these movies since damn near the beginning and love them. But you take the violence out of it and really.. it's just not a strong series. Slasher flicks are nothing without the slasher part, lol. I suppose the optimistic part of me just has faith in a few people making a few good decisions out there in the world of horror. :P anyway, we got the rating issue out of the way, now I'm just looking for a really good movie. They've got an opportunity to start this thing over and give it an actual track to roll on if they choose to make more. So I just hope they do this right.

BRING IT ON!!!

1:03am, April 18, 2008

I don't think the question was too outlandish considering: 1.) How everybody thought the new cast was definately catering to the teenyboppers. 2.) How older R-rated movies like the original Prom Night and When A Stranger Calls became tame PG-13 remakes. So yeah, the question's a valid one. But I'm glad it's sticking to the R!!!

horrorchick81
8:48am, April 18, 2008

AWESOME!!!even though it wont have pam vorhees in it which will bite, but i ay bring on the blood and guts!!!!! ya!!!.......i hope that this film makes a crapload of money then maybe pissy pg 13 studios for horror flicks will listen and start taking chances on R HORROR flicks.. sweet bout time they listen to us horror fans! good no stupid teeny boppers can see this. i am so checkin this out now that just made my day....i agree with u on that horror_movie_girl. they will prob sneak in or have there parents take them. i swear if there are stupid teeny boppers that ruin the film for me then i will say something to them. bring on jason!!!!

The difference between this remake and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake is that the original TCM was actually considered a good film. I love the Friday the 13th series as much as the next guy, but let's face it, it's just exploitation. Did the guy drop the ball on the TCM remake? According to quite a few fans of the original, as well as critics who like Roger Ebert who at least hailed the original as techinically proficient in what it aimed to do - yes. There is no way to "mess up" a Friday the 13th movie, because there has never been a Friday the 13th film posing as high art, or even thoughtful horror. People watch it for the gore, nudity, and the occasional scenes of tension (or even simply to watch an iconic figure hack teenagers to pieces.) I don't like Marcus Nispel's previous films, but I honestly can't imagine a way he could screw this movie up.

I am excited that they are remaking F13, i just hope it does not turn out like the new Halloween that focused more on Sex and Drugs, it strayed to far from the original. I really hope this remake sticks to the classic.

Brad Fuller sounded like "the man" there. Great to here that this is going to be "R"...which is the way it should be. I am a fan of the TCM remake, so I am looking forward to Nispel's work. CAN NOT WAIT!

..Yeah, but does the "R" stand for in this case "Redundant"?
