B-D Review: No Surprises in Screen Gems' 'Prom Night'

I went and check out Prom Night this morning first thing to share with you my thoughts, only David Harley beat me to the punch. I'll probably whip up a little something something for my blog, but until then here are David's thoughts. "There's nothing I could say to anyone that would change their preconceived notions about PROM NIGHT. Then again, if I had set out to positively change them with this review, I wouldn't actually have anything to say. PROM NIGHT is exactly what you thought it would be, maybe even a little worse, and yet, I laughed through most of it." Click the title for his review or check out my blog for my mini-review of the film.

Obviously one of those "remake" movies nobody wants but the studios make, instead of the movies everybody wants but no studio makes.

The worst thing about this movie ws that if it was rated R and contained some Blood and Language it still would be so terrible. I'll take the original disco decapitation anyday. Jamie Lee rules.

big surprise...sigh

i got free passes to the pre-screening on Thursday, and i must say, (without hyperbole) this is THE worst remake/reimagining i've EVER seen. i kid you not! tv shows (i.e. Supernatural-which i like,) have more bloodshed/tension in them than this turd. i actually feel offended as a horror movie fan. the movie is an insult to anyone who digs thrillers and horror films (IMO).

Big surprise. This looked like big cheese from the beginning. I'm only hoping we get better movies from "Train" (Terror Train), "My Bloody Valentine", and "The Stepfather". Wait!! There's more.... "Motel Hell", "Friday The 13th", "Rosemary's Baby", "Last House on the Left", I'm sure I'm missing a few, but I'm hoping one of these wil turn out great. What are the odds?????

I agree this Prom Night was even more worse than One missed call. Nothing was scary. You couldn't see the kills and all you heard was screaming.

Of course you couldn't see the kills, it WAS PG13. Also, this WAS NOT the worst remake. In fact, it's probably the best PG13 remake. I know that's not saying much, but the acting was decent, there was actually BLOOD, the story had some bumps, but overall was pretty smooth. I know I'm gonna get loads of hate for NOT hating Prom Night, but come on, the original was SHIT. I mean, I love old movies, but the original Prom Night was CRAP. This was a DECENT PG13 remake, not in the LEAST bit scary, but it was fun, AND the Unrated Cut will most likely include a lot of the violence that was cut from the theatrical release.

Prom Night made over 9 million dollars on Friday night, more than the Ruins made ALL last weekend. THIS is why we hate PG-13 horror. Prom Night is the kind of crap that will get forced down our throats for the next 3 years because it makes money.

These reviews are absurd. Anyone who proclaims this the worst horror remake of all time has clearly never seen the recent APRIL FOOL'S DAY update. Or ONE MISSED CALL. Or THE OMEN. Or BLACK CHRISTMAS. Or HOWLING 4: THE ORIGINAL NIGHTMARE. Or a host of other stinkers not only in recent years, but down through the history of horror cinema. If you're going to presume to speak in absolutes, try to have at least a fair amount of knowledge of the subject you are addressing. PROM NIGHT is a teen thriller, and as such is reasonably effective. Certainly more so than the WHEN A STRANGER CALLS redo, which was aimed at the same 12- to 18-year-old female audience. Certainly more so than PG-13 non-remakes like STAY ALIVE, which routinely target 15-year-olds. And therein lies the problem with your negative comments - few of you seem willing to accept that the movie wasn't made for you, the 20- or 30-something male horror fan. GOOSEBUMPS never scared me either, but I didn't expect it to, because it was aimed at scaring 8-year-olds. You'll learn to appreciate film a lot more if you become aware of something called a "target demographic", and to make an earnest effort to view movies with their target demographic in mind. Doesn't mean you'll like these teen fright flicks, but at least you'll learn to review them fairly.

jkrouskop, i've seen the other movies you've mentioned and i still stand by my post that Prom Night is THE worst remake/reimagining i've seen. again it's just my opinion.

jkrouskop, just because it wasn't made for people like me...that doesn't change the fact it's a big steaming POS. It fails to come even close to being a decent teen thriller, especially when you have to consider it can be done right like Disturbia. Unlike Prom Night which sucks not matter what demographic it's going for.

i didnt think it was that bad at all actually. its not even meant for me (i am old enough to drive) and i was entertained, and more importantly, didn't feel stupid for watching it, like i did with many of the other PG-13 movies. And Harley's review is wrong - he kills the maid to get her key, hardly 'no reason' (at least it's SOMETHING, which is more than Zombie's Halloween had for killing about half the people he does). In fact, he even lets one guy live because he had no reason to kill him (the black kid). there are countless more movies more deserving of your hate...

I don't think he didn't kill the black guy because he had no reason to kill him but rather because he was using him as bait to lure out his girlfriend from hiding. So, I guess I kind of agree with that. Though, if that girl hadn't of been hiding, there is no doubt in my mind that he would have gone for it. Now, from what I remember, the maid kept her keycard in the cart she was wheeling around. I can't say whether they she actually did end up bringing the keycard into the room with her or not, because they didn't show it, but when he asked for towels, odds are she probably would have put it back before venturing back into the room with said towels. If he had tried to steal it while she was in there, that would have at least been an attempt at some suspense (as to whether he would ultimately succeed in doing it before she got out of the room). As much as I didn't like this film, I'll agree and say this was at least better than some of the other PG-13 films I'm sure you're thinking of. Then again, anything is better than When A Stranger Calls and The Fog.

JGrayland

keycard was attached to her via one of those tension snapcord thingies. And yes, anything is better than Stranger Calls. The ice machine! Run!!!! I dunno, it really just didn't strike me as anything really bad. Just run of the mill, with a few nice touches that made up for its shortcomings (bloodless kills, disjointed 3rd act).

Wow, I must have totally zoned out then. Hahaha

I liked the movie. Sure it could of been better, but it was very tragic. The main character taking pills and councling, and THEN, as soon as she thinks its ok, BAM! All this happens. Everyone shes ever cared about is gone, if she did die in the end, it would of been a happy ending, instead she has to live knowing everyone died because someone was after her (so it was kinda her fault, but not really) Plus, Britney Snow is so pretty! I would give it a 3.5/5 :-D oh, and did anyone see the trailer for Quartine? THEY SHOW THE LAST SHOT OF THE FILM IN THE TRAILER!!! how obserd!
