David Goyer Talks New 'Dark City' Release!

It was rumored a few months back that one of my favorite films of all time, DARK CITY, would be getting re-released with brand new special FX work added. No other details were revealed and it has been silent since then - until now. The other day I chatted with writer David Goyer, who is off in Chicago directing THE UNBORN for Rogue Pictures, who revealed a few more details on the project that any hardcore fan will appreciate. Read on for the skinny.

While on the set of his upcoming film UNBORN, writer-director David Goyer updated us on the re-release of DARK CITY, which he wrote for Alex Proyas to direct. "It's coming out fairly soon [and will] probably have limited theatrical, but Im not sure," he explains, "I have seen almost all of it and I took part in an over hour long making-of."

In addition to the special features, Goyer reveals that there's more to the re-release than just special FX upgrades. "[They re-did] the score and the cuts a little longer," he reveals, "all of the parties involved did fairly lenghtly interviews with us, they'll be incluced on there."

He's also quite sure that there will be a Blu-ray release. Join me in a lengthy scream of happiness. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Released in 1998, Alex Proyas, (The Crow) directs this futuristic thriller about a man waking up to find he is wanted for brutal murders he doesn't remember. Haunted by mysterious beings who stop time and alter reality, he seeks to unravel the riddle of his identity. William Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland and Jennifer Connelley all star, even Melissa George makes a cameo!

I can't wait for this.... This is one of my favorite films as well, and it deserves special treatment. Hopefully it'll be out by or before summer.

It'll be nice to see it on the big screen. One of my top 10 films as well.

New special FX work added?!!? Can't people just leave things the way they are? Dark City is a classic as it IS and doesn't need "Lucasing". So I guess that means I still should hold on to my New Line DVD from 1998 then too, huh?

NO FUCKING WAY!!!???? I love this movie, and I never thought I'd hear a new word about it again. The effects were already quite good. Can't wait.

Great movie, but I'm with RedSabbath, you guys really need to watch the mock 'Raiders of the Lost Ark/ Steven Spielberg & George Lucas Destroying Movies' episode of South Park.

The film was fine the way it is. Actually, if the opening narrative by Dr. Schreiber is removed, that will be all I ask for. The score is being redone? If Goyer messes with Trevor Jones' masterpiece score, I will be very angry! The Special FX were perfect, no need to redo them.

Fuck yeah. Normally I'd object to such tweaking, but this sounds intriguing.

Great movie. Glad to see it get some more recognition. I must've watched the Melissa George scene at least 80 times, so far (no exaggeration)

So will it include the deleted nude Jennifer Connelly scene (please tell me such a scene exists.)?

WOW - Everything about DARK CITY clicked [just like the 1st CROW film] from the cast, soundtrack, directing, etc - figures 10 years later we'd get a special edition release [hopefully with better dvd packaging]!!! ~(^)~

Mark my words: this will never get re-released in theaters. Hardly a soul checked it out back in 98', and I don't know a single studio that would believe it would be profitable to rre-distribute this. Love the movie, but I think we can all be safe in rejoicing that it will be a great re-release on JUST DVD and Blu-Ray.

Loved the movie, great idea, storyline, and background. Some of the characters are very memorable including the little childlike "Stranger" (for lack of a better word).
