Michael De Luca is a legend if you ask me, and I'm extremely jealous that Collider had the chance to do one of the most lengthy one-on-one interviews I have ever seen with the man. During the interview the website got the legendary producer to talk a bit about some of his upcoming horror projects ranging from Dracula Year Zero to Priest. Read on for the skinny.
During an interview with Collider, De Luca updates the status of PRIEST. “ 'Priest' is an active project of mine as a producer over at Screen Gems and my producing partner on that is Josh Donen who works with Sam Rami on those I think those “Ghost House” movies," he explains, ""[it's] a genre-blending movie. It’s kind of like a sci-fi horror film about a group of specially trained priests that hunt down vampires in kind of a post-apocalyptic wasteland."
When they finally got to DRACULA YEAR ZERO, De Luca went on and on about the plot. "[The film] is a origin story for kind of an origin story for Prince Vlad of Transylvania and how he came to be a vampire and what were the circumstances surrounding his transition from you know ruler of this modest country to King of the Undead." He continues, "It’s almost a mix of historical fact and supernatural fiction. It takes place during the time of the original Price Vlad... Vlad was born in 1390, so it’s the 14th century." But what brought him to the story was it's blend of films. "The script was an ingenious blend of “Braveheart” and a horror film. Like Prince Vlad is positioned as a young ruler who to protect his kingdom from the tyranny of the invading Turk army allows himself to become a vampire and in doing so ends up defeating the invading Turks but is now stuck being Dracula for the rest of his undead life."
De Luca goes on and on and on in one of the longest interviews I've read, so if you head on over to Collider you can read more on the story and what director Alex Proyas plans on doing with it.
