B-D Picks the Top 10 Horror Remakes of All-Time!

Not every remake sucks, believe it or not, and to prove it we've compiled a list of our Top 10 Horror Remakes of All-Time. With Lionsgate's The Eye having just hit theaters, and 20th Century Fox's Shutter arriving in a few weeks, we thought this would be the perfect time to unveil our list. And if you think this list was easy to compile, you're wrong. Watch for our Top 10 (maybe more) Worst Remakes in the near future.

The Top 10 Best Horror Remakes of All-Time

This was the hardest list to compile, specifically because I don't even like all ten of the films listed below... in my opinion there aren't even ten spectacular remakes. So what you'll find below is a list of the ten best remakes, which doesn't necessarily mean GOOD. Just wait until you see my list of worst remakes, that was much easier to compile. Now I present to you the Top 10 Horror Remakes of All-Time...

10. House of Wax (2005)

Dark Castle was building a track record for making terrible films, and everyone assumed WAX would be the next in a long line - we were all wrong. The movie was extremely violent, the set designs were astounding and we got to watch Paris Hilton die. Sure it wasn't the greatest film, and the beginning is pretty damn boring, but overall it was an enjoyable experience. And talk about a mean-spirited film... violence for the sake of violence without any reason - ouch!

9. Hills Have Eyes (2006)

Alex Aja did a nearly shot-for-shot remake that's loaded with mutant rape, insane amounts of gore and violence beyond comprehension. It's a shock this film made it to theaters with the MPAA stronger than ever. It's easily an NC-17 film that someone made it to theaters. Gorehounds drooled blood.

Platinum Dunes' remake of the Lutz's terrible (supposed) tragedy was plenty creepy and carried a twist that either made or broke the film for you. Ryan Reynolds was fabulous in the film and Melissa George kick-started her horror run with this ghostly tale. This is one remake that, when revisited, is better than you remember.

7. King Kong (2005)

I personally loved Peter Jackson's vision on first viewing, and really got into the emotion of Kong as a character - even with all of that CG I could feel his pain. But seriously, a giant monkey and a hot blonde chick? Overall, the movie was a holiday blast, even though it's running time was WAY too long and the dinosaur stampede sequence is laughably bad. Replay value is also null, but this still earns a spot on the best remakes list.

Even though this remake of the legendary Tobe Hooper film from the '70s doesn't stand the test of time (it's pretty boring now), when I originally saw it, the film blew my mind and punched me in my gut. I thought it was consistantly disturbing, uncomfortable and disgusting - it was as gritty as you can get before going over the edge. If only more films were this intense on first viewing we'd live in a better world. I had to take a shower to scrub off the dirty feeling it left me with (oh how I miss that feeling).

When DAWN was heading to theaters I remember the backlash. Horror fans didn't want it... and neither did I. In fact, horror writers like Ryan Rotten bashed the script to a bloody pulp before it even was made. But what came of Universal's remake was the release of confidence and acceptance from genre fans - proving without a shadow of a doubt that a film CAN be remade and be good. Instead of trying to "be" George A. Romero's original, James Gunn strived for a different take that left nothing to be compared. And the film has a zombie baby... nuff said. Thank you Zack Snyder!

4. The Blob (1988)

Kevin Dillon at his best ever. This is a slime-filled delight filled with all sorts of crazy '80s fun that will entertain you from start to finish. Purple goo has never been so much fun. This is the '80s that we all know and love, THE BLOB has infinite replay value.

3. The Fly (1986)

Definitely one of the best remakes of all-time is David Cronenberg's THE FLY. Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis are incredible in their roles; Goldblum has never been cast so perfectly. His erratic movements and talking patterns help bring life to one of the most gruesome and terrifying creature-features of all-time. To this day the film still makes me sick to my stomach and carries one of the darkest tones ever to grace the big screen. This is more than a film, it's an experience. "There was an old lady who swallowed a fly, perhaps she'll die.”- Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum)

2. The Ring (2001)

THE RING kick-started the Japanese remake craze by bringing US audiences one of the most unsettling and scary films in decades. Personally I place this film in my list of scariest films ever made. I knew that DreamWorks was confident in the film when they showed it in theaters an entire week before it's official release date as a "sneak preview." Directed by the now legendary Gore Verbinski (enough Pirates, come back to horror!), THE RING carries a non-stop unsettling blue tone and unique style that keeps your stomach in shambles. I can easily say this film is a masterpiece. Too bad the sequel landed in our worst list (coming soon).

... and now the best remake of all-time goes too...

1. The Thing (1982)

If there's one remake that stands next to THE FLY it would be John Carpenter's remake of THE THING. Spoofed in a gazillion cartoons and TV shows, referenced in thousands of movies, and already rumored to be the next re-remake, this sci-fi horror film is chilling to the core. Alien monster dogs, H.P. Lovecraft creatures, John Carpenter AND Kurt Russell... do I smell heaven?

A list I can pretty much agree with. The comments, not so much and The Ring was shit. That shouldn't make any list except least scary horror villians of all time.

I'd take out House of Wax, King Kong and Amityville Horror. I did like Amityville but I don't think its top 10. I'd have Tom Savini's Night of the Living Dead, House on Haunted Hill and The Mummy*. *The Mummy is a remake. The original even had a Mummy named Imhotep. And they had to pay royalties to Karloff's family.

THE THING... such a timeless classic... And a remake! hahaha.

5:20am, February 29, 2008

Okay. I have to agree with thegardian86. House of Wax, King Kong, and the Amityville horor were mediocre at best. I also think that Dawn of the Dead was a Dissapointment. I don't point fingers about DoTD, because there is really no way to best the original. I also have to disagree with the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. You can't better that either. The reamake was a shitty attempt. Sorry. The Blob???? Fuck the original and the remake. Stupid premise. Stupid movies all around.

House of Wax and Texas Chainsaw Massacre were terrible; I can't say I agree with you on that. Also The Ring should not be so high in the list, it was not scary at all...The Fly and The Thing however I completely agree with - both are brilliant films...and I was very impressed with DOTD which I admit, I also was against the film before I saw it but upon viewing was pleasantly surprised!

pretty fair list, The Thing is easily number 1 but The Amityville Horror and Ring remakes...naa, and the blob should be a little further down the list

6:59am, February 29, 2008

I loved most of those, but I hated the Ring.. and basically all Japanese horror, so I'm biased. But good call on number 1. The Thing is fucking classic! I'd have added Night of the Living Dead 90 to my list, but hey.. that's just me. Good list ;)

It's interesting to see how the opinions of people are so clearly split between those who enjoy watching a good horror movie and those who have an appreciation for the technical aspects of good film making. I think the list is spot-on!

Guywiththegun
8:12am, February 29, 2008

The top 10 horror remakes of all time includes a few completely shitty movies, a handful of mediocre movies, one movie that shouldn't be classified as a "horror remake" thrown on here just to add "cred" to the list, and 2, count em', 2 genuinely good movies. Yeah, that sounds about right. I think this article makes a pretty good point as to why horror remakes in general, are bad.

Sea Hag
8:18am, February 29, 2008

Kong is great and has tons of replay value, TCM 03 is dire, Amityville 05 is dogshit (to list those two and not body snatchers is horrible) and The Thing isn't a remake.

horrorchick81
8:28am, February 29, 2008

cape fear was a remake?.....i agree with this list....never did see the fly have to gte it on netflix since my local video store closed down.

9:12am, February 29, 2008

Fun list! I like it and agree with most of the picks personally. I never was a big fan of The Blob though. I'll replace it with 13 Ghosts. I know, most people hated it... but I just sort of liked that movie.

deadlover
9:17am, February 29, 2008

I loved King Kong. I really dig the ring also. That's right. I did. I would say that the fly is better than the thing... although the thing is great. The Fly is a fantastic character based movie, where as it's the situation that sells the Thing. The Fly is nearly heartbreaking, and the thing, while excellent and paranoid and skin crawling as it is doesn't hit me the way the fly does. Hills and TCM I thought were mediocre at best. Good for a view or so, but once the shock wears off there isn't much substance left.

MrV
9:27am, February 29, 2008

I agree with the Thing in firt position. TTCM, amityville, hill have eyes were fun to watch in theater. The second view is not worth it in video, cause beyond the surprise there's nothing. But the Ring sucked man...

PsykotikDelusion
9:28am, February 29, 2008

The Ring, TCM, House of Wax, and Kong were terrible. There had to be a few others that are better than them. Besides that the rest were pretty spot on. I was shocked.

9:39am, February 29, 2008

amityville sucked, Cape Fear should definitely be on there

Must make MrDisgusting upset to never get any Diggs on his lists. Afterall it is the only reason to do random lists like this. Fummy how "The 17 Greatest Horror Movie Weapons Ever" from another site made it to Digg page one. Maybe next time...

11:18am, February 29, 2008

Not very good. What about Invasion of the Body Snatchers 78? No way in hell House of Wax or Amityville are the better movies. Even Body Snatchers was better than those 2. Also no Night of the Living Dead? What about the Vincent Price version of House of Wax? Yes that was a remake of Mystery of the Wax Museum. I found a lot of the remakes listed fait enough movies, except The Ring didn't care for it, but I understand why so many people did so I'm not shcoked it made it. House of Wax and Amityville were fair I suppose, but top 10 remakes of all time? A lot of people trash remakes, but if you look over the history of the genre, you'll find some really good ones and ones far better than a lot of the movies listed

deadlover
11:19am, February 29, 2008

The 70's Invasion of the body snatchers is better than 2/3's of those.

House of wax, TCM and the ring are all HORRIBLE remakes! Can't believe these made the list.

BrianBoitano?
12:15pm, February 29, 2008

What about The Night of The Living Dead remake? I think it's better then most of the coices up there. Im glad to see The Thing is number one , i dont even think the grudge should on here though

Amazonagent
12:52pm, February 29, 2008

I can agree with most of this except for Amityville, TCM, and House of Wax...those 3 weren't good movies in general let alone remakes.

horror_movie_girl
1:15pm, February 29, 2008

I agree with most that is listed, but I can't agree to any movie with Paris Hilton in it and King Kong was terrible you can blame Jack Black for that!! I enjoyed the TCM and Amityville.

coldblood
1:32pm, February 29, 2008

This is a great list. I agree with it with the exception of one film; House of Wax should be replaced by Rob Zombie's Halloween. Rob should get huge props for going after that one. The original Halloween is as sacred as Jaws or The Exorcist - that took serious balls to remake and it and he showed respect for the original when he did - it wasn't some shameless attempt as easy money catered to the under 17 crowd like so many others have been recently. For the people who want Cape Fear on there I don't really think it is classified as a horror movie - probably more of a thriller. I agree it's a great movie but I don't think it's horror. The Amityville Horror movies I never really liked because the original and the remake both focused on the supposed ghost sightings in that house which the Lutz's admitted later that they made the story up just to get out of living there. I wish they would make a movie about the real murders which took place in that house before they moved in - that would make for a better (and scarier) movie. But I agree it was a good remake as far as remakes go. As far as the people here complaining about TCM remake; the remake had the disturbing elements and really went out of it's way to creep us out. The only element that was missing is that the original almost looked like some kind of weird snuff film - which is one of the reasons it was so effective. The remake only missed on that one thing but I think it busted it's ass to scare us otherwise. Otherwise the list is great - and The Thing definitely deserves to be on top. It actually is way better than the original.

djdeathwish
1:41pm, February 29, 2008

The Thing as #1 definitely makes sense but I would also have included Savini's Night of the Living Dead. That was brilliant.

MovieGeek
1:50pm, February 29, 2008

TCM boring now!? WTF!!! I'd trade Saivni's Night of the Living Dead remake over House of Wax or The Amityville Horror, even though I did (somewhat) like them.

gorefreak5
2:10pm, February 29, 2008

I wouldn't put Halloween on the list, but at least it's better than lukewarm remakes like House of Wax, Amityville Horror, and the TCM remake! And the Dark Castle remakes aren't that bad!!! They are fun movies to watch (especially around Halloween). And what's with King Kong? That flick is only good for at least one or two viewings. Also, The Blob and The Fly were on there, but they couldn't fit Cape Fear and Invasion of the Body Snatchers '78??? And I don't know if they deserve to be on the list, but The Grudge and The Hitcher weren't too bad.

Biohazard
3:12pm, February 29, 2008

"HOUSE OF WAX"? Awww, c'mon! I guess you have to kinda old to remember all of the excellent and sometimes superior remakes that Hammer Films did in their heyday.... If Hammer hadn't come along who knows where we'd be with horror movies, right now. Just watch Lugosi's DRACULA and then compare it to HORROR OF DRACULA...yes, Hammer remade most of Universal's Horrors with great success, added color, good scripts, excellent acting and sexy babes...today they seem to be remaking so many horrors because of CGI or added violence....

deadlover
3:16pm, February 29, 2008

Savini's NOTLD wasn't that good. And to be perfectly honest, I don't get the original TCM. I thought it was kind of obnoxious. Long dark shots of him chasing the heroin through the woods where you can't see anything saturated with the girls ear-scraping screams and wimpers. Bad acting...at no point (with the exception of leatherfaces little dance at the end) was I either scared or entertained. I can understand that the original TCM was one of the first to use the approach that it did, but that doesn't make it good. The remake at least entertained me.

5:14pm, February 29, 2008

I seriously think THE HILLS HAVE EYES is totally unappreciated in the remakes. That's probably the ONLY horror remake I can honestly say that I love more than the original. THE FLY and THE THING should've been tied for first, and I do agree that Tom Savini's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD should've been in this list.

DannyTsk8er78
5:31pm, February 29, 2008

Pretty good list. I agree with most of the choices, but I think The Ring is a little too high. But yeah, The Thing is without a doubt the best re-make of all time.

magnaderalpha
6:35pm, February 29, 2008

The Thing deserves it's place. The Fly and The Blob should've been hirer than The Ring. Some of the others weren't really that good. I agree, Savini's NOTLD remake was awesome.

No "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"? That should FOR SURE be on here! I can only agree with "The Thing" at no. 1 and maybe with "The Fly" (but I probably would have placed it lower). The rest are utter shit. And why is "king kong" even on this list?

jarofsap
8:18pm, February 29, 2008

THE THING!!! Absofuckinlutely perfect! It is in fact the best remake ever! Though Texas Chainsaw was far from perfect, I know some people really liked it. What's with you Ring haters? You all loved it when it came out I bet. You're just backpeddling cause of the hype it had. Now it's one of those 'it's cool to say I don't like it' films. Same shit happened for Blair Witch, the difference is The Ring is flawless horror/suspense greatness. Better than Ringu, ya I said it!

jarofsap

I would have put hills have eye alot higher didn't like the ring thought it was really boring couldn't stand the house of wax remake I would have even though it would tick off alot of people on here but who cares rob zombie halloween on the list. Probably would have put hills have eyes remake at 1 at rob zombies halloweeen at 2 on my list.

leatherfacekillserinfan1
10:00pm, February 29, 2008

why do all of u hate house of wax and tcm? any movie that has a killer chasing a hot girl(jessica Beil and Elisha Cuthbert) around is awesome. I rather watch those than something like saw or hostel. I think King Kong should be taken off because that wasnt even a horror. replace king kong with halloween.

Considering how far the original strayed from the source material, I've never really thought of "The Thing" as a remake. "... Body Snatchers" was better than most on this list. TCM? Awful.

'The Thing' is a great horror film, but it's not a remake. Another adaptation of the short story 'Who Goes There?'. 'The Fly' should have been number 1! Yes to 'The Hills Have Eyes' (better than Craven's), 'TCM', 'House OF Wax' & 'Dawn Of The Dead'. What about the 70's & 90's 'Body Snatchers' remakes? Please put 'The Invasion' in the worst list! Also, I would have had Zombie's 'Halloween'. But that's just me! I know you're saving that for the worst of all time list, MR D!

I agree Amityville should not even be on the list other than that the list is an A+ for me. King Kong, The Blob, and House of Wax finally get the respect they deserve and get placed with The Ring, The Fly, The Thing, and Dawn of the Dead. Wonder if next year Funny Games (2008) will be on this list? That will 3 Naomi Watts Films!!!

I didn't care for the remakes of HOUSE OF WAX or AMITYVILLE HORROR .... but I did enjoy the remakes of 13 GHOSTS and HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL [notice I did not include the remake of THE HAUNTING as that was a cgi disaster]! Here's a challenge - A TOP 10 LIST OF HORROR SEQUELS ! ~(^)~

Was R. Zombie's Halloween considered a "re-vision" instead of a "re-make"? That deserved mention somewhere on this list. Didnt care for most of list, but I agree w/The Thing's rating.

I would remove "Amityville Horror", "The Ring", "King Kong" and "TCM" and replace them with "Invasion of The Body Snatchers", "Night of The Living Dead", "When A Stranger Calls" (come on, it was a HUGE improvement over the borefest original!) and "Sisters". -RHR

I would agree in taking out The Ring, Amityville and King Kong. What about Halloween, I know it wasn't considered a pure remake but Rob Zombie did an amazing job and it should be on this list. The Ring wasn't even scary and King Kong only looks better thanks to the wonderful world of technology. Amityville was okay.. as hot as Ryan Reynolds is.. it's basically him shirtless the entire time.

The Ring didn't just kick start Japanese horror. It was the first quality American horror movie made for awhile during that time. This board seems like it has a lot of stupid people on it.

I know I'm alittle late with this but all were good idea's but the ring really sucked, H O W paris gettin killed nuff said, TCM was graphic, sorry the beginnig was graphic, kong was nice to look at, hills brutal ,dawn was great ,amytiville was creepy the boat house scene, now for the fly and the blob both were ground breakin with the fx for the time and the thing is was and will be in a catagory all by it's lonesome it's what we all look for in a movie

I'll respond in the same list as Mr. D. Houe of Wax - I really enjoyed this film, I'm a fan of Chad Michael Murray and the fact Paris Hilton got her skull gored through by a large pipe is brilliance in every aspect. The Hills Have Eyes - I also enjoyed this movie, as well as the sequel. I'm looking forward to the third installment. Movies like this never get boring in my book, granted they're the same premise but the gore and storytelling is what sets them apart. Amityville Horror - I'm a huge Ryan Reynolds fan and he did a great job in this film. The scenes where he was talking to himself and spazzing were great. King Kong - I honestly have not sat all the way through this flick. I adore Jack Black and Adrien Brody but the forty-five minutes I saw of this film almost made me sick. I'm sure I'll eventually sit down and watch it, just no time soon. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - I've enjoyed every film put out in the Massacre series, minus The Next Generation, and look forward to any others they do. They constantly get good actors and the delivery is genuinely good. Dawn of the Dead - Once again, a film I highly enjoyed. Mekhi Phifer and Ving Rhames were both tremendous in their roles and I have to agree with Mr. D, you can never go wrong with a zombie baby. The Blob - I saw this many years ago and I can honestly say I was bored to tears. I can rightfully understand why people enjoy it, but I myself found it to be extremely dull. The Fly - As big a movie buff as I am I've never seen this film. I'm a Jeff Goldblum fan, too. Jesus, I need to rent this. The Ring - Good acting, nice uneasy feel to it but holds no water next to the original. Although I did enjoy this movie, it's nothing more than a popcorn flick. The Thing - Excellent movie, nothing else can be said. The game that came out for the PS2 was good as well. Also, to the user that said it wasn't a remake and to anyone else that doesn't think so, it is indeed a remake. John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) is a remake of Howard Hawks' The Thing from Another World (1951). All in all, good job on the list Mr. D.

Please do not respond to other users comments here, that's what the forums are for! Instead just leave your comments on the article itself. ALL OTHER COMMENTS WILL BE DELETED! that's what it says right befor my post i just thought it was funny b/c almost every post is about another user, so this must be a joke...anyways. King Kong is not Horror. Please stop bringing this shit into horror. That's an insult to the genre and our intelligence so please stop it with this shit. Kong was a great movie and a great remake but you said horror remakes...come on now man you're looking desperate. You should have been ballsy enough to put the Halloween remake in there. it got a ton of criticism but who cares. it was more entertaining than a lot of the films in your list. it can't compare to the original but it's still a better movie than almost half your list. house of wax was ok, and i can see that being there. Hills was amazing. it was the most disturbing movie i have seen in a long time, b/c of the family and the torture they went through with a ton of cinncanatti slicking gore. The sequel sucked. amityville good movie deserved to be on the list. Texas Chainsaw was awesome. I agree with your comments. they were perfect. Dawn of the Dead was amazing. Good job there. The blob was a shitty movie. Shitty plot. Shitty movie. It was garbage. the fly and the thing were pieces of artwork. they were just amazing. the acting like you said in the Fly was incredible. The thing was just one of the most entertaining movies ever.the ring was a great. i wouldn't go see the movie for the first month it was out. if i would have not saw it in the theatre and waited for it on dvd i would have shot myself. It scared and gave me a feeling none of these other movies did, but i can see someone not finding it scary. The thing about horror is what scares me, might not scare someone else, and this movie wasn't about gore or sadistic scenes of torture. It wanted to scare you and it scared me. There i admitted it. the only movie to scare me in almost ten years and it was an 8 year old girl. Sorry for being a pussy. So in conclusion, take out the blob and Kong and add Halloween and let's i'm going to have to think about the next one. Hell i'd put the made for TV remake of the Shining. I know steven weber isn't Jack but i liked it. Too cheesy of an ending, but horror needs happy endings sometimes. oh wait the hitcher. yeah i liked the hitcher more. 10 house of wax 9 Mentally ill from Amittyville 8 the fly gasp i called it art than i put it at 8. Is it horror? great movie but come on people we are horror fans damn it. lets find our inner serial killer again. blood, guts, lots of murders. criticize me. 7 hitcher crazy guy, good kills, good shit 6 Dawn of the Dead great movie but i like serial killers more than zombies, but i still loved it 5 Halloween Crucify baby i liked it, but not the original. Rob did a couple of things i didn't like. for one he made michael human and a product of his own enviroment. bad homelife so he loses it. and then he wants to befriend his sister again and not kill her right away. made him human and the best line in any horror movie is when donald pleasance(dr.loomis) referrs to him as pure evil. whew i nut myself everytime i hear that line. still very entertaining enjoyed it. 4 the thing i mean great movie but it all boils down to its more sc-fi horror and i more horror horror if you know what im saying , but dont get me wrong amazing. I it was an overall better movie but i personally enjoyed the others more. Im getting butchered for this one i know. 3 Texas Chainsaw- loved it! the beginning set the mood like a son of a bitch. she pulled the gun from her ginar i mean shit man that's distrubing. and the part where it shows them screaming and it shows the hole through her head. Loved it! Build up of leatherface coming out the sliding door debuting that chainsaw for the first time in the movie. with a nice chop block on that guy's leg. Cryptkeeper joke- chop block-ha ha anyways great movie nuff said. 2 The Ring Scared me. sorry. it got me. and the story was good and i just simply was scared and i dont scare easy i swear. once again personal opinion. 1 Hills- best horror movie i have seen in a long time. i needed this movie. the family praying together really set the mood for a disturbing film. the family had to see their dad burn alive.then the mother's death and then the guy seeing his wife, the mother of his child, getting her head blown off practically. and the girl getting raped. and then the dude goes nuts and rapes the rest of the family of freaks. omg it was bliss. so there's my take. i like your list overall but remember blob blows and kong isn't horror. god man that bothers me you put that on there. Kong...jeese.

I hope I don't sound like an ass for saying this, but the list does say HORROR remakes, right? THE THING, THE BLOB and THE FLY are Science Fiction....KING KONG is FANTASY.... Just because something is a little scary doesn't make it HORROR...

6:43am, March 12, 2008

Guys, some of you are missing the point here. The title of the list is "the Top 10 Horror Remakes of All-Time!". It doesn't say top ten horror movies of all time. It's not a comparison of Movie ranked number 1 is better than movie ranked number 5 , it's about comparing the remake of a movie to its original. So, for example if "the Thing" is at no. 1 it simply means that compared to its original, Mr. D found it a better remake compared to for example "House Of Wax" remake at number 10. this is taking into account the technical aspects of the film between the original and the sequel.

2:09pm, March 19, 2008

The Thing is one of the best genre movies period, remake or not. The Fly was also very good. NOTLD '90 deserves a place, over say King Kong as it has never really been a 'horror' film. It's always been much more of a sci-fi adverture film. Ditto with those campaigning for The Mummy remake. It's not a horror film, it's an Indiana Jones knockoff. Of course, it could be argued that both the Fly and The Thing are more sci-fi than horror, but try to find someone that doesn't have The Thing on their 'best horror movies ever' list. Unless they are lame or have no historical perspective, it's on every list.

King Kong where the hell did that come from? Although it was an incredible remake I would say it was in the wrong genre. And WTF is with the ring that movie blew. I fell asleep watching it. Where is the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead, that was far superior to the original. And what about body sanchers, that was a pretty good remake. Does it count as a remake if the original creator of the story makes their version of it. If so, there is Mary Shellys Frankenstein, and Steven Kings Shining to consider

I agree with the list, predominantly. The THING was/is awesome and deserves to be no. 1. As is the Fly and Dawn of the Dead. I liked the other movies on the list, With the exceptions, King Kong, The Blob and House of Wax. Although they are watchable movies, they dont belong on this horror remake list. I would replace "House of Wax" with "Night of the living dead '90", "King Kong" would be replaced by "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and "The Blob" replaced by Rob Zombies "Halloween". Good list overall though.

INVASION OF THE BOSY SNATCHERS [1978 version with Donald Sutherland + Veronica Cartwright] improved on the 1956 original, but whoever decided to remake it again into both BODY SNATCHERS [1993] and THE INVASION [2007] deserve to be bitch slapped and fired from their jobs !!! Tobe Hoober's INVADERS FROM MARS [1986 remake of the 1953 original] deserves mention for updating beyond what we thought was scary in the 50's !!! 13 GHOSTS was one of the best William Castle adaptions from Dark Castle [better than the campy original]!!! I <3 John Carpenter's version of THE THING [everything worked in that movie]!!!! ~(^)~

I liked the list, but I do think House on Haunted Hill could have made it; I thought it was an excellent remake. Geoffrey Rush even seemed to exude a Vincent Price aura, lol! And while I have not seen the original Japanese version of The Ring, I thought it sucked and ushered in a bunch of silly, lame "thrillers". The Grudge anyone? Ick. I do think though, that The Ring had a scary and promising concept. It was just mashed to crap under a very slow moving, cataclysmically boring film. At any rate, I think the list was pretty decent. :)

Otherwise it "wasn't hot!" #3 How come the new Halloween is not on the list? Seriously... "house of crap" made the list but bombed in theatres, Halloween was fantastic and doesn't get at least an honorable mention? I think they need a list of top 10 ill-thought lists. nuff said

What's 'House of Wax' doing on that list? A classic Vincent Price film remade into a slasher movie with Paris Hilton. What the--? 'The Fly' deserves to be number one. There's no way 'The Ring' deserves to be even in the top five. And where's the 1978 remake of 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers'? This is a pretty rockin' list. I might've put Savini's Living Dead in there over the Blob, or Jackson's Kong (which I would consider more adventure/fantasy, however, the original King Kong was definitely a horror classic - people were freaked out when it came out). So glad no one mentioned Halloween, Dracula, the Shining, the Wicker Man, or Godzilla.

House of Wax (remake) was a load of tripe. There's no way it can be on a "Best of ..." list in any way, shape, or form. It's on my "Worst Remake of a Horror Film ... EVER" list. In fact, it's close to #1 on THAT list! It has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the original. It can't even be really called a remake in that respect. The death of Paris Hilton, while funny, couldn't even save it. Give me ANYTHING else ... please. Invasion of the Body Snatchers, any of the ".. of the Dead" movies. I'll even take House on Haunted Hill. It's also a load of tripe, but at least it had a semblance of the original and gave a shout out to Vincent Price fans by ACTUALLY having Mr. Price. That character was quite the direct copy of Vincent himself!

I'm not going to complain about this list since I have not seen all of the movies on it. (Although, personally, I would have put Dawn of the Dead higher up the list.) It was in fact a remake of the 1951 The Thing from Another Planet with James Arness (Marshall Dillon from Gunsmoke fame) as the titular creature.

You're missing all of the pre-Nicole Kidman Invasion of the Body Snatcher films and The House on Haunted Hill (To suggest House of Wax is better, well that's just why I ignore the official reviewers on this site). And let's get over it people, the original Halloween is dull. Rob Zombie's remake is a much better film. Not a 5 or 4-star film, but an okay way to kill time making it still better than the original. I applaud the fan reviewers on this site for defending this movie.

Where's the remake of House on Haunted Hill? That was a great movie, though very different from the Vincent Price chiller. Return to House on Haunted Hill sucked royally. 13 Ghosts sucked, so I'm glad its not on the list. The Thing was great, and very close to the intent of the original novelette.I'm glad to see that. King Kong (1985) sucked and still sucks. The new King Kong (Peter Jackson's) does not suck and should be on the list.

That's right morons, House of Wax (1953) IS A REMAKE of The Mystery Of The Wax Museum. Other remakes you missed that should have replaced half your list are: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931) - a remake of the 1920 version, and if you doubt it's greatness, explain the OSCAR FOR BEST ACTOR to one Frederick March as Jekyll/Hyde. Oh, and way to overlook two of Hammer's greatest films, The Curse Of Frankenstein which introduced a brand new and brilliant take on Victor Frankenstein from an actor you may remember from Star Wars, that's right, Grand Mof Tarkin himself, Peter Cushing and The Horror Of Dracula which introduced the world to one ass-kicking version of the Count thanks to Christopher Lee. You left off 1979's Nosferatu. How can you possibly justify the Amytiville remake as better than that? 1978's Invasion of the Body Snatchers was brilliant,an amazing take on the classic '50's film, and don't try to weasel out by calling it science-fiction, that was a horrific portrayal of a world falling to an alien threat. And while the last one I thought of isn't even that strong, 1982's Cat People should at least get mentioned. Certianly it's better than 2005's House of Wax. Exceptionally disappointing list. I come here for intelligent information and discussion of horror, not pathetic attempts that think remakes started in 1982. Up your game.

Cool list, The Hills Have Eyes belong way higher up on it though.
