Screen Gems Begins Casting 'Legion'

I always throw my hands in the air when it comes to Sony Screen Gems, who typically turns out more genre turds than any other studio - but occasionally something good sips through their fingers (whoops!) Besides the Dowdle brothers' QUARANTINED, the Scott Stewart religious horror film, Legion, sounds pretty damn promising. They began casting this week, with the first announcement inside.

Paul Bettany (Master and Commander, The Da Vinci Code, Born) is set to star in "Legion," a Screen Gems thriller that marks the feature directorial debut of Scott Stewart. Stewart wrote the script with Peter Schink.

The project was hatched by Bold Films, whose David Lancaster and Michel Litvak will produce. Gary Michel Walters will be exec producer. Sony acquired overseas rights to the property from Bold at Cannes and then took the rest of the film later.

Story follows what happens when God loses faith in humanity and sends his legion of angels to wipe out the human race for the second time. Mankind's only hope lies in a group of misfits holed up in a diner in the desert who are aided by the archangel Michael (Bettany).

Stewart is a co-founder of visual effects house the Orphanage, but Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper said his rewrite showed an affinity for character over spectacle.

"I was so impressed with his rewrite that I took the meeting with him, and his visual presentation closed the deal," Culpepper said. "I'm sure he had the same impact on Paul."

Production begins in New Mexico in March.

Bettany is shooting "The Secret Life of Bees" for Fox Searchlight and will next be seen in "Young Victoria" and "Inkheart" for New Line.

When I first saw the title, I assumed it was another take on William Peter Blatty's novel of the same name.

So, God is the bad guy in this movie? Weird. I assumed the title "Legion" was referring to the man that Jesus cast the huge posse of demons out of. When Jesus asked the man who he was, the demons inside him responded "My name is Legion, for we are many." Creepy. A man possessed by 7+ demons that no one could handle--now that would be a killer concept for a film. Also, when God lost faith in humanity the first time, and sent the great flood, there was still hope. Noah was faithful, built the ark like God said he should, and humanity survived. I hope there is some element of God-sent hope apparent in "Legion". Otherwise, the plot is completely out of character for the God (Yahweh) that a large percentage of movie goers worship (namely Jews, Catholic Christians and Protestant Christians).
