Hackl Talks 'Saw V', Dangerous Trap!!
Tuesday, February 12, 2008

You're not sick of hearing about Jigsaw and his insane traps? Good to hear, because David Hackl is gearing up to direct his first film, Saw V, for Lionsgate. He's ready to chat and has a lot of good things to say, you can read it all inside. Saw V arrives in theaters October 24 from a screenplay by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton.

Director David Hackl tells us that filming is only a month away. "We are five weeks from shooting, we are deep in prep now and the production offices are buzzing. On Monday our construction team begins to fill our newly renovated 38 thousand square foot studio (The same place that we shot Bousman's Repo! only cleaned up)."

Directing your first movie is an exciting moment, and Hackl is dreaming of a bright future. "It still amazes me when I look into an empty studio knowing that it will be full within a couple of weeks. Tony Ianni has moved into my old spot as production designer with zeal."

As for the traps, Hackl tells us that these are actually going to be dangerous! "Yesterday he (Tony Ianni) handed me a "reference" DVD from Jason Ehl our trap builder. I opened it just before leaving the office to go have my birthday dinner with my wife and kids. The disc was full of real life "inspiration" from industrial accidents, plane crashes and road disasters," he continues, "I almost hurled on my laptop. It all came from a discussion that we were having about the fact that the human body doesn't actually lose that much blood after the heart stops beating. It actually acts like a vessel, containing the blood unless there is an injury that allows it to drain downward. I like attention to detail." I winder how the cast will react to the news that a trap could actually kill them!? "Today I am looking forward to making a phone call to one of our cast to ask him how he feels about getting into a trap that could potentially kill him. For real. Of course we will make it as safe as we can and have paramedics standing by while we shoot. Its not like he really has an option and maybe it will make him appreciate his life. Ha!!"

Watch for more SAW V goodness when filming begins next month.

You're right, the ending of saw 2, 3, and 4 blew. Oh you said blew me away? Sorry, I guess for mass produced, rushed production, Hollywood horror it is better than 90% of what comes out.

I just hope that Trick 'r Treat doesn't get shoved around even more or is delegated to direct to DVD because WB is afraid something new can't compete against an overdone series.

Wow this director sounds like a real idiot. "...a trap that could potentially kill him" "Its not like he really has an option and maybe it will make him appreciate his life. Ha!!" What a dumb ass they are not going to let an actor do something that could "potentially kill him."

Oh and yah I really can't stand the Saw series at all any more, I loved the first 2, 3 was decent, but 4 was simply atrocious. I can only expect still without Jigsaw & Amanda 5 will be just as bad...

i like the saw series but they should have stopped at 4 because they cant do much else now we know why jigsaw turned the way he did and everythings been done guess hollywoods run out of original ideas after all

I have loved every saw movie but however I just think the way saw 4 ended and with the detective becoming the new jigsaw I think the next one is really going to be dragged out and it is going to be very easy to fuck up. Im hoping for the best though.

6:59pm, February 12, 2008

Please. I seriously doubt that there's a trap that could actually kill somebody..."for real." He wouldn't put his actors in danger like that and no actor in their right mind would ever take a chance like that. Besides, the Saw ship has sailed. Saw IV was horrible. And the ending was stupid as hell. I have no idea why people are praising it as much as they are.

8:58pm, February 12, 2008

i for one liked 4.3 was kinda gay....(someone spoiled the ending : ( ) 2 was pretty good. and one was just brilliant. 5 will go one of two ways.it'll either be really good with a big twist in the end....or it could suck some big fat balls. but i'll still be there opening weekend despite any negative reviews.

I think this one will be beyond the others. A lot of people are skeptical about this movie and think they should just stop. I am tired of hearing how people were confused in the last one, it left things out in the open for the fifth one, just go with it!!! I love the traps thats what got me obsessed with the whole genre of saw! Keep up the movies as long as you want!

I Love The Whole Saw Series(Even Though The Ending Of 2 Was So predictable). I Can't Wait To Find Out What Happened To Jeff's Daugther. I'm Assuming Since We Haven't heard Anything About Dr. Gorden That He's Dead. I Think Jigsaw Should have Let Det. Matthews Live Since Det. Kerry Stuck Her Hand In The Acid And Still Died. Can't Wait For 5.

"I GIVE YOU BLOOD BLOOD!!!" -Gerald way This is the only time I'll ever quote that fool but yeah every single saw ending was very unexpected except for 2 which was kind of predictable but that the same time with the kid being in the safe it through me off but the whole Amanda thing was see through. Saw 3's ending had me scratching my head on how they could keep going for another 3 movies Saw 4 had me clapping in the theater. Saw 5 and 6 (WHICH I HOPE THEY STOP AT 6) are going to be good since the old camera crew is taking over the direction in other words they know the angles they need to make it scary gross and all around Saw like they know what's the prefect amount of blood they would like to see on screen at once without it over whelming the whole picture and I believe the end of Saw 6 will have us begging for more. and I want to see the return of Daniel

Zodiackilla13

Looking forward to it. Underrapreciated series and endings have been good twists. The only series of more then 2 or 3 flicks that can keep it going with creativity and keep you guessing until the end. Keep it up twisted pictures.

"real traps" huh? We will see, im excited to hear the director is new that is for sure, hated the direction of the SAW films and i always felt that if it had been better the movies would have been awesome..minus SAW IV which i hated. I hope V will be special though

Mr. Fillet
2:44pm, February 13, 2008

All of the SAW films have been great. No the last three haven't been as intellectually satisfying as the first, but do you real go to a SAW film expecting it to be great mystery. The biggest twist that we could expect was the end of the first film. From here on out it's just blood, guts and vengance for lives wasted. I couldn't ask for anything more.

Man, I swear...some of you should not consider yourselves horror fans. WTF? 1-3 were good. That's it...everything ended with part 3. DONE. 4? Are you kidding me? How the droopy-sloppy dried up cunt was SAW 4 shocking? The best thing about it was Jigsaw's autopsy. The rest BLEW. JUST MAKE IT STOPPPP PLEASE!!! Mr. Disgusting, please say a prayer for me. LIONSGATE: STOP THE PAIN!!!! NO MORE SAW!!! You're killing it!!!

MCBD016
6:53pm, February 13, 2008

There is no way this is actually possible. I hope this film doesn't totally suck, because the first 3 movies were amazing, but 4 definitely showed signs that the series needs to end (both in the quality of the film and the box office numbers).

In 20 years if they were releasing Saw 25 I would still be there! Lol. Seriously though, these movies have been incredibly imaginative. Just the fact that they are trying to keep it fresh is a great sign for horror movie fans. We have grown accustomed to being insulted when we go to the theater to see horror movies. These guys haven't ever done that so far. Keep up the good ideas!!

Dr Gordon is NOT dead. And that's still part of what needs to be filled in in the upcoming films. Watch Saw 2 and check out the surgeon and his 'disability'. Saw 4 was a gateway film, not done the best but hopefully the events in it are relevant to the past and future of the Saw series. Also, watch for Obi in Saw 3(Jill flsahback), there's still a connection between Jigsaw and him that isn't expalined.

Well..the movie seems quite delicious..but thats ofcourse dependent on how well Mr Hackl can direct..Saw franchise is one of the best movie franchise and i hope saw V lives up to the expectations..Looking forward to this one.

So I signed up for this site solely for the purpose of venting my frustrations with the Saw series. When the first one made its debut, I was amazed. It was so raw, so gritty, so different from all of the shit shilled out for years and years (i.e. House of Wax, Final Destination, movies like that). The second one came out, and I thought, "Well, this is...okay...but not to the caliber that the first one held. Maybe it was a creative misfiring." After the third one, I was disgusted with where it was going. The "traps" were all so hokey, and the general idea of the entire movie was laughable. At that point, I decided that I would wash my hands of the entire Saw series. I haven't even watched the fourth one yet, and knowing that Jigsaw is dead and they just can't quit beating a dead horse, they plan to release another one? It's tragic. A splendid opportunity was given after the first, and it all got washed down the soiled drain that started the first film. Creativity was lost with the key. And that's my thoughts.

12:54am, February 22, 2008

There is NO POSSIBLE WAY that a director would be able to have an actor use a trap that could potentially kill him/her. The entire film and theater industries are union. SAG would flip **** if they tried to stick one of their actors in a real death trap.

WretchedPleasures, why does this upset you soooo much? If you're not interested, don't watch. I don't like musicals, so I didn't see Rent. Simple solution.

WretchedPleasures
8:05pm, February 22, 2008

I don't intend on watching, but I felt I should voice my opinion on the matter. Saw had the potential to become a great, powerful series of horror movies. It seems like they just started running out of ideas and decided throwing together the first thing that came to mind. I'm not so much upset as I am disappointed to see where the direction of the series has gone, that's all. I never meant to push my beliefs about the movie. I don't care if other people like it. That's fine, let people like what they want. Who am I to judge? My opinions are mine alone, and this idea of a fifth one just bothered me. I would hate to have this be a series of movies that is looked back on as a pathetic attempt at shock horror. Let's take, for instance, the latter end of the Friday the 13th series. I mean...Jason X?? That was awful, and just destroyed the little credibility the series did have. I am a fan of that series, albeit its cheesy 80s style. Hellraiser never really translated all that well into movie form. The first one was good, in my opinion, and then they kept going, and never came close to the power of Clive Barker's original story. The insane amount of sequels to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre...I mean, there are a lot of valid examples. I guess, when it's all said and done, I'm more disappointed. I don't intend on seeing this next film. I do keep an open mind for the most part, so time will tell. I haven't watched the fourth, but I might at some point. Who knows, I might find it interesting. But if the sequence of events is any indication, I kind of doubt it. I meant no offense to anyone here, and if I offended anyone, I apologize for doing so.

I absolutely cannot WAIT for SAW V! I have followed these movies from beginning to end. I love them, they have me open-mouthed in awe at the end of every movie. Tobin Bell himself has renewed my faith in horror! Hopefully the director can show us how awesome the movie is, and leave out the doubt from all the haters rippin on this awesome series.

Watching the original saw in a packed cinema was a great experience. Albeit the films have got a little worse each year, most series in the horror genre are the same, just look at Halloween. I do hope they stop at saw VI but who knows, this might knock everyone socks off. However, I’m not holding my breath.

1 - I've been enjoying ALL Saw-movies, from the 1st to the 4th. I am "one of those, who can't see what's to hate on Saw IV". I've enjoyed watching IV, OFCOURSE it wasn't even close to one of the previous parts, but ... I can't really see, how people could actually use the word, 'hate', when they're talking about Saw IV .. Well, I COULD; after all, they're just opinions, and EVERYBODY has right to their own opinion(s) .. But again, I think Saw IV is being .. I don't know how to put this .. I guess, I'll have to agree with "jigsawchick" .. 2 - Dr Lawrence Gordon IS dead .. (I mean .. Think about it ..) 3 - I AM looking forward to Saw V .. (AND OFCOURSE Saw VI !!!)

like WretchedPleasures i signed up solely to comment on this page, except i disagree with alot of you. Saw is a brilliant series, it will be hard to kill. although i agree the fourth one was pretty, well.. lame. i'm completly looking forward to V and possibly even VI. i don't see anyones doubts about it. i like were they've gone (and are still going) with the Saw series. i think it would take a fucking genius to make a series of even 4 movies, and i would like to see you (critcisers) try and make a better series. can't wait till this october!

..I'm kinda hoping we haven't seen the last of Amanda yet .. None of you people have to 'correct me', because I have seen ALL of the movies, and [therefor] I know she died from the neck-shot, by Jeff, on Saw III, but still ... Just even showing flashbacks from, well, you know, perhaps 'more of her victims' .. I kinda, like(d) her inescapable traps, (Troy, Allison Kerry). . But I have this feeling, we HAVE seen the last of her indeed .. :'( :'( :'( :-( .. Oh well .. THE MOVIES STILL ROCK !!!!! THEY (the writers) ARE STILL SICK !!!! NO.. THERE'S NO FU**ING WAY, I, EVER, WILL GET DISAPPOINTED BY SAW .. NEVER EVER !! :-D :-D :-D

If you ask me, I think it's a.. ..uhh.. What's the word I'm looking for?? I think it's a .. Uhh .. I think it's a .. PUBLICITY-STUNT (??? !!!) After they "SAW" how Saw IV flopped, and people not appreciating the movie and so on and so on, I think 1 of them, decided to do this ..

I think people need to take the SAW movies for what they are; gory, trashy fun. The fanchise is absolutely huge and plans to continue the series up to Saw VI were set in stone a long time ago now. I've enjoyed watching each entry, but I don't find them scary so much as hard to watch at times. I'm happy not expecting anything more from them. They're great looking movies too, the editing and direction is always very good. Keep them coming I say.
