Wu-Tang Clan member RZA has joined the cast of Universal Pictures $60 million rip-off Repossession Mambo, according to the MTV blog. The morality tale is set in the near future, when artificial organs can be bought on credit, with the understanding that defaulting on payment will result in a fatal repossession. Repossession was announced after Darren Lynn Bousman's organ repossession musical Repo! The Genetic Opera was announced - after having passed on the project themselves. Hmmmmmm.
Well in Bousman's defense, a major studio ripping off something of yours that they passed on is total bullshit. Universal probably liked the story, but were too scared to take on a musical. Then they tried to rush out and make their version of the film thinking they could get it out before Bousman. I don't care if Bousman's version makes any money or not (the trailers are a little iffy looking) but I hope that Universal's flick fails miserably, just because of the stunt they pulled.
But repossession mambo is based on a best-selling book that has been out for quite some time. So doesn't that mean Repo! is the rip-off. They are stealing the book's concept without paying for the rights.
Eric Garcia's novel Repossession Mamba has never been published. It has been claimed that he started the screenplay based on his unfinished novel in 2003. The original stage production of Repo! A Genetic Opera was debuted in 2002 directed by Bousman from the stage play by Darren Smith and Terrance Zdunich. After that Bousman worked with them on developing it for a feature length film and helped write the music. He then made a short film version of it in 2006 so help sell the project. Universal turned the idea down but a few months later announced they would move into production with Eric Garcia's idea. His book will be released in order to promote the film.
Shut up Zombie... Rappers are usually better than half the fucking teen actors headlining these shitty teen horror movies now a days.
And RZA is just plain awesome... But BOOO this movie for blatantly ripping off Bousman's project
